I'm going to start off and say, spoilers ahead.

A lot of people seem to miss the theme of this games story over and over, it seems never ending really. The first game was about cycles. Green mage always did this, brown mage was always a skeptic, blue was always a henchman/sidekick. Even the player plays a role in its cyclic hell that Everhood 1 was (I say hell, but Everhood 1 is amazing)

Everhood 2 expands on that even further. Constantly giving you side stories or stuff that seems meaningless. While right in the beginning of the game they tell you "everything is vanity". The games story is this: it wants to distract you because IT'S bored. It, being the Shade that you see throughout the game. Even telling you at the end that it was all for show. Basically directly talking to the player telling us "Well you wanted to battle and fight, so did I, here we are now at the colosseum, go ham buddy" (paraphrasing here).

The game overall makes it very clear that whatever choices we make, whatever things we do, don't matter. Because the whole point of the game is to entertain yourself with battling, and to entertain the Shade with said battles. Everything else in the story doesn't matter because it's all a thinly veiled attempt to keep your attention. Hell, it even loops back to the area in Everhood 1 at one point to show you truly, how much it never ends. Green and Brown mage will always be apart of it, in some way. The mushrooms will always be on another plane of existence because their third eye is open or whatever.

To hit the nail on the head one last time, when you (try) to exit the game a prompt comes up. It's like the game is screaming that this is as cyclical as Everhood 1 at every turn. A lot of the story is plainly said but hidden behind its attempts to distract you. And it probably was successful in distracting you if you thought otherwise.

Overall?
I think it's a great game. It won't be for everyone, but understand that the game is both serious and not. The ending is flat, but there is a reason for it. If you enjoyed Everhood 1 for the story and it's cyclic nature, you'll probably enjoy this game too. But understand WHY the story is like that, it's for a reason. Anyway, time to go back to the Hilbert hotel and enter into another room for the night and hoping another guest doesn't come in and make me move.

Early Access Review
With the addition of easy anticheat I can't really support this game any longer. I played it very minimally and the community was a wonderful group of people. But the devs making the decision to include something that 100% of the fanbase goes against just doesn't sit right with me.

Edit:

I wanted to update this review a little bit. With the addition of EAC they have also decided to get most of the quality of life mods people have been asking for implemented into the game. And try to get them put in as quickly as possible. However this was ONLY after such negative feedback from this update alone. EAC should never be needed for a social game like this.

It's okay. I've only played for a little bit but enjoy clicking the cookie sometimes. :)

This is very easily one of the best VR games you could ever purchase. Even if you don't buy the DLC, the modding community for this game and the eventual support it's going to get from the developers is amazing.

This game is easily one of my favorites. Both this and the previous game get a lot of attention from the devs to make the game flourish and it really shows. Highly recommended.

This game changed pretty much how I view a lot of other games. The choices in this game and it's features make it really top of the line. The story is really top-notch. The only thing I would really say is the graphics are a little lower quality. But over I don't think that matters much as it fits it really well.
