Came for the porn, stayed for the story...

Brevity is the soul of wit so they say so I'll try and keep it short and concise. There's a lot I like here but also room for improvement. Let me try and hit everything. (time of review is the Ela update).

*Pandora (the porn stuff)

Top notch honestly, FOW shows why they are arguably the best at what they do. There is enough variety as well for just about anyone to get their rocks off.

There are some obvious features missing from the player. You can't mix and match scenes with the waifu's when you make a playlist. This sucks if you want to focus the fetish of the content and mix and match your favorite scenes.

They added some ability to adjust the camera this patch but it's still just too little. There is only one POV for each scene and at the moment all you can do is slightly adjust the frame and zoom. 2 or 3 prefix camera angles is pretty much the norm now a days for 3D porn games. I'd like to see some prefix angles added on top of the zoom and frame adjust.

*Story

The story is what caught me off guard in terms of how much enjoyment Iv'e been getting out the game. The writing is campy and self aware and remains fun through out. The VA's sound like they are having a good time with the dialogue and even the side characters feel like they have things to do and motivations ect. Overall it's a comfy narrative with some good world building and great VA's.

*Game play

Your time playing Subverse is split between a schmup and a grid based tactics game. I love both of these genres but don't expect R-type or FF tactics. It's frustrating because there is a decent foundation for both genres here.

The schmup segments feel good to control and aim but there just isn't enough substance to it. Upgrades to your ship are linear and practically non existence at this point. You can pick a waifu as a co-pilot but all it alters is your right click special ability. I'd like to see things like passives and skill trees added, have enemies and their AI adjusted for the depth. It get's too stale too quick.

The grid based combat I enjoy more but it has similar want's from me. It's just too shallow as it is now. Fight's aren't made with sustain or synergy in mind. Enemies spawn in waves and it's either kill them quick enough or you don't. I'd like to see things such as your waifu general having synergy with certain units, ways to apply debuff's and buff's more frequently, the ability to alter the battlefield ect. I'd like it to feel a bit more in depth with strategy than it currently has.

*Conclusion

I'm f**king blasted right now but Iv'e been enjoying Subverse. I was/am a backer for the game and I do wanna address how long it took for the game to finally hit early access and how long it took for this update to hit. I'm not unSIMPathetic and like keiji inafune taught us (look up mighty number 9 if you don't know) you can take a while to deliver something and deliver s**t. I don't think FOW is trying to do that, I think they really are trying to deliver a solid game/experience. It shows in the writing, it shows in the Pandora scenes, the decent foundation laid on the schmup and grid based tactics. There is still a ways to go but I think what they got so far is a good starting point and I look forward to more Subverse.
