I write this review from the perspective of an experienced f2p gacha player. I've seen gachas rise and fall, have hundreds of thousands of rerolls at this point, and know what signs to look for in what makes a gacha good and sustainable vs what kills a game's future. I've been through censorship controversies, botched collabs, predatory and borderline abusive monetization, and straight up false marketing and advertising. I've been playing gacha games on and off for about a decade and never spent a cent on any of them.

It's understandable why people are so frustrated by the success of gacha - it's literally just loot boxes but as the whole game. Really, it's a lazy but effective way for companies to make money - why release a game for a $20-60 price tag and include all the content when you can abuse peoples' FOMO and gambling addictions for well over double or triple that number while arbitrarily gating content behind money? That's why I play all of my gacha f2p: for the satisfaction of accomplishing what others spend hundreds on without spending a penny myself. And throughout my experience with the genre, the most obvious factor in what makes a game f2p-able is:

"How feasible is it to clear content without whaling?"
For many games, the answer is obviously "not very". However, PM is one of the most generous companies I have seen in recent history when it comes to their monetization. The base IDs and EGOs that are provided to the player are more than capable of clearing the current content. Some of the base IDs are even better than their gacha counterparts. The maintenance compensations are generous, however the gacha rates themselves are only ~average.

I've only gotten into PM games because of Limbus Company's announcement a few months ago. Since then, I've been engrossed in the universe and story. It seems that PM knows what they're doing and has a real passion for doing right when making their games. Indie gachas are very few and far between, so it's nice to see a true labour of love in the genre.

To those concerned about PM "selling out" and finding themselves falling down the slippery slope of "well if the game does well then they're not obligated to make any good games anymore, they can just continue the perpetual live service cycle of wringing out their audience for cash", this is 100% not the case. It's been established by PM that they're making a live service game in order to fund their more-ambitious future projects. My advice is to just enjoy the game for what it is rather than doomposting in echo chamber forums about how PM has become corrupted and blinded by greed.

Oh yeah, the gameplay is great too. Not too hard like their other games but definitely tickles the neurons. The classic PM artstyle also makes a return, more refined and detailed than ever. I eagerly look forward to other projects by PM and the future of this game because I'm sold. They recently revealed the development roadmap which includes gacha currency (lunacy) and limit break currency (thread) farming among the standard content additions and adjustments.

The future seems promising for PM, and if you're a fan then I implore you to give Limbus Company a try, if only for the juicy juicy story and setting. Ignore the gacha if you want, although the reroll only takes about 2 minutes per trial if you're into that like I am.
