Fantastic platoon-size player-versus-player "realistic, but not annoyingly so" action. One of the best controlling shooter games I have ever played.

HLL and PS would be smart to take lots of notes from what DH does best, but they won't.

December 2018 Update

Unfortunately DayZ has been disappointing enough to bother negatively reviewing. It doesn't manage to succeed in any regard - as for survival elements and play, it is far outclassed by other simplistic survival games. As for zombies, it is far outclassed by much more enjoyable titles like Left 4 Dead and even the Zombie Trilogy. In DayZ the zombies feel more like an annoying chore keeping you playing. As far as looting goes, it is tiresome and annoying to have a crafting system in place when nothing you craft is worthwhile. In-game mechanics for moving items around your inventory or attaching, reloading, etc. are tedious. Loot is bad everywhere you would think it would be, so there's almost no point in playing on 80% of the map. As for PVP, there are pretty much an infinite amount of better alternatives - one being ARMA 3. There is just nothing to offer here.

I bought this game in 2013 when I (like many else) fell for the hype train that was the big standalone "DayZ". Unfortunately, it was extremely underwhelming back then, with insanely broken zombies and terrible PVP compared to other shooters.

Nearly SIX years later, this is not the case, but the game is still just as unfun.

A friend and I ran around a medium-high density server for roughly two hours - in that time my main weapon was a shovel. I killed at most 10 zombies, but felt no threat the entire time. There is no incentive to do anything. There is no enjoyable PVP elements at play. There is zero drive to continue playing outside of voice chat spam.

The available loot is just garbage and I was seeing constant repeats of random crafting materials all the time. Don't get me wrong - it's on the right track, but at this point in time, so late into the life of this game, it's ridiculous to get so little from such a huge amount of invested time. No threat, no fulfilment, just walking until inevitably you find another can of spaghetti.

I will say that sound design has gone far, of all things. The sound quality is really stylizing itself well now that it's actually being developed, weapons are boomy, zombies sound scary. But that's really the only shining light in this unfortunately boring husk of a game.

$45? That's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke. If I had to pay for this in 2018 (mind you I paid 30[?] dollars in 2013) I would say it's worth $7.50 at most.

it's niche and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in some ways to warband but i still like fire and sword, it's got some unique vibes that take me back to when i started playing the mount and blade series in a nostalgic way.

Stuart Little has ruined my family. Last summer, I approached the miserable mouse in the street, and asked him for his autograph, because my son is a huge fan. The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rat gave me the autograph and told me to burn in hell. Later, when I gave my son the autograph he started crying and said he hated me. Turns out the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ didnt write his autograph, no, he wrote “you’re a piece of ♥♥♥♥, and I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ your mom”. I’m now divorced, and planning a huge class-action lawsuit against the white devil that ruined my life. Your time is almost over, Stuart. All the people you’ve wronged will rise against you.

One of the classics, and seeing recent Zombie title releases solidifies even more how Left 4 Dead has maintained the gold standard for co-op zombie gameplay for all these years.
