I don't often write serious reviews, but I feel this game deserves one.

Gameplay
It's a game about flying where you only indirectly control your craft, which happens to be a really cool giant falcon. Or it can be a pterosaur or a dragon.
You're armed with various kinds of laser-like weapons and will dogfight against other flying opponents, ships, flying ships, giant things hard to categorize, and even flying fortresses. You will learn to line your shots while managing your bird's energy and health, and you will feel really badass doing so.

Progression
You, as in the person in relative control of the flying beast, are expandable. You will pick a new character at every new chapter, which you can, oddly, play in any order. Don't fret, everything important that you unlocked at any time stays unlocked (birds, locations, missions, upgrades, etc.), so you can restart a chapter with a new class at any point without losing any progression. It seems a bit weird at first glance, when every other game has convoluted unlock trees and grind, but this freedom is actually very enjoyable.

Narration
The scenario is pretty elaborate, and more than serviceable, with a complex lore about factions and houses waging wars, forging alliances and betraying each other in an enigmatic world full of ancient secrets.
It should be noted that EVERY line in the game gets voice acting, which is even pretty good !! My favorite until now is a drunk character that is pretty funny, as in an obvious imitation of someone grossly drunk.
The side missions are pretty forgetable (mostly combat or escort missions) but they have the merit to exist as additionnal content.

World building
The game world also benefits from some escort mission that are diegetically integrated into it in the form of ships that will ask for assistance or mention that the waters are dangerous, and in general the world feels alive, with ships crossing trade routes, odd pirate encounters, and hostile factions, depending of the chapter.

However the game succesfully avoids the "theme park effect" that some open world games have by offering vast expanses of oceans to cross. it has in general a sort of eerie feel to it, especially in some areas like the Temple of Creation which I found completely by chance and was a pretty amazing moment.

Art direction
It is somewhat "simple" on the technical side (low poly, limited texturing) but every piece fits together with the others really well, to create a beautiful world that feels a bit out of time, or rather "after the times" : it feels that civilisations have already ran their best course, and all is left is an endless ocean of lost knowledge. From what we can gather from npc dialogue their life is hard, and conditions dire for most, which I feel is also conveyed through the somber tones of the cities and the sea. In general the color palette is beautitul, with surprisingly superb combinations of colors for the ocean (deep purple, cyan blue). YMMV, my screen has weird color balancing.

In conclusion
If I'm not mistaken this game comes from a very small dev team, which can explain the quirkiness of the game sometimes. I feel that also contributes to its odd charm though, and it should be noted that performance is incredible (some AAA should take note) and is perfectly stable. I'm really interested to see this studio's next projects.

There must be a misunderstanding about this game. It seems universally revered, loved and considered as a literal gem over the internet while in truth it is a pretty basic brawler, below average in my opinion.

It only has a very limited number of combos, has a very linear progression/storyline... that you have to play once with each character to complete the game.

The jumping/dodging/parrying mechanics and timing feel floaty and imprecise. Some enemies have horrendous hitboxes, special mention to the boss Gideon which is all over the place, I mean I've never seen anything even only remotly as bad in 1200+ hours of Dark Souls 1.

The good : the art and animations, while overly pixelated, are lovable, and a good representation of the comic's characters.

TLDR : Not recommended as a video game, this is only for hardcore Scott Pilgrim's fans.

Now comes with a 3rd party launcher whose sole purpose is to sell you stuff and syphon your data into countries that won't protect it. It also broke Linux support, great job.

This PC version is barbones. It lacks basic features like ultrawide support or a simple Vsync toggle.

Very nice demo, it's a real chunk of the game with a fairly large area (Port Issoudun), several enemy types and a cosmic entity as boss.
Combat is a bit more rigid than your typical Souls game, but works really well and has some interesting mechanics. This demo offers a choice between 3 very different weapons to start with, in addition to the ones you can loot on enemies.
Level design is very intricate, with a lot of hidden doors and secrets, shortcuts and maps folding back on themselves, while the atmosphere and setting (decrepit space station) work well and are reminiscent of the first Dead Space.

What could still be improved upon would be UI readability, crafting clarity, and group based dismantling of similar items.

Game is incredible, but the port is less than impressive.

  • NO ULTRAWIDE SUPPORT, it is sad for a 2018 game
  • Lack of graphic settings : DOF, motion blur (!!), bloom, FOV, etc.
  • Limited granularity in other settings : antialiasing, volumetric rendering, etc.
  • Weird mouse lag or acceleration, not unplayable by any means but feels awkward
  • Pad layout can't be rebind, im playing with kb/m as a result
  • Some graphic features broken on pc : water reflection, full quality textures, etc.
  • UI is really cluttered, to the point of making it sometimes hard to find the right menu
  • Once again, NO ULTRAWIDE SUPPORT, WTF Capcom???!!??

It is worth noting that Capcom sold billions of copies of this game on console, and took an extra 6 months to work on the pc port. While the game is still as awesome and the port far from unplayable, it's still lackluster enough to detract from the experience.

I will update my review to recommended once/if most of these issues get fixed.

UPDATE : As of mid september (DevilJho's update) the game constantly crashes with the ERR12 error message. Unplayable, and too late for refunding. GG.
