Words cannot describe how much I love Nioh. Other than the fact I have over 2k+ hours on PS4 and bought it twice...

The first play through is by far the hardest, and you will be constantly struggling. Everything that hits you will quickly destroy you. Your ki (stamina) regeneration and understanding of ki pulse is abysmal. Depending on your previous gaming experience it may feel absolutely awful at first hand, or like second nature.

Nioh, as a series allows you to become the boss. The second game didn't take as well on that concept but you can still easily kurbstomp enemies when the game mechanics and build you decide to use resonant within. Reason I say such is become it's quite a long journey to reach such a level mechanically. The gear will only take you so far and when you get to where the game really checks you, only then will you weigh between determination to excel or retreat.

To summarize some of what you will see as you play, there are 5 difficulty levels and for simplicity there's a bonus area on the 5th that can be considered exponential scaling based on your progression; We call it the Abyss/Underworld for Nioh 1/2 respectively.

Intro
During your first mission in Dream of the Samurai, you'll notice everything you pick up has stats, rarity, levels, etc. Take whatever is the highest level at the time for your weapon of choice. Don't steer beyond 70% weight load as it increases Ki consumption, slows your movement speed and Ki regen. The 3 types of armor (Light, Medium, Heavy) are exactly as they sound, pick whichever appeals to your style. Guardian Spirits and Yokai Cores stats all stack, so take advantage of that when you can. You can allocate stats however you like, though as a start, make sure you have enough for the equipment you find so the stats are active, and apply something like 10/10 in Ninjutsu/Magic as they have useful buffs that come in handy as progress.

Combat
You have 3 stances, High, Mid, and Low. High stance does heavy Ki damage, usually high in damage output but slow and you have a dodge roll with the highest invulnerability frames available. Mid stance has the best block mitigation and secondary dodge as a roll, this stance usually holds your Counter/Parry/Block skills. Low stance is nice for poking, elemental/status application, Ki consumption on dodge and double dodge being a slide forward although it doesn't have as much frames as the dodge roll it's useful for positioning and quickly getting around. There's a "sheathe stance" where you can perform certain actions such as Iai Quickdraw (Sword Sheathe Skill) or Rage (Axe Damage Buff Skill).

Story (Small Spoiler)
I'm not much a story person but iirc it plays around the Sengoku Era when Oda Nobunaga is alive along with Tokichiro. You don't need to play the first game to understand which is nice and it's an interesting take on the events, personally enjoyed it.

This came off more as a guide than a review but it's only an opinion and suggestion, do whatever you feel is more natural or fun for you. I hope to see you in the Depths, Hide.

They made a comeback, but I'd STILL say spend your money elsewhere. It's not nearly as bad as it was 6 years ago, has it's ups and downs now but like any other game, It'll get it's time out of you one way or another.

However... their customer support is atrocious, and there's serious issues with general progression in the game.

Still, I'd say at least try it. It's free to play after all.

The horror was extremely thrilling. So thrilling that I got scared just loading into the game. (Yes, I know I'm a ♥♥♥♥♥ for getting scared before the game even actually started.) Though, this is definitely worth your money, I only played the demo so far and I was scared ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ even during the day. At night? Pfff, I just closed the game down and called it a day. (I'm too scared man, plsnohate). Officially love this game though. <3
