"David, You've lost your mind!" - bemused review reader

Quiet you.
I know how it looks.

No, my carbon monoxide detector doesn't need a new battery.
This game rocks.

You won't believe me, but there is some kickass gameplay here. It manages to blend Hotline Miami, EYE: Divine Cybermancy and a bucket of vomit. At it's core Cruelty Squad is an assassination game. Infiltrate the fortress. Kill someone important. Escape. Somehow, despite the offensive presentation, the game succeeds.

Perfecting a route to kill your targets is a ton of fun. The levels are great and provide lots of opportunities for creativity. Similar to Deus Ex, you unlock body augmentations. They give you a slew of fun abilities while revealing new ways to play old levels. Exploration is rewarded and secrets abound.

It's fast.
It's violent.
It's a LOT of fun.

...Trust me.

Fast, bloody, relentless. Terrific movement, great gun feel. A terrific way to spend an afternoon.

Loved it. A wonderful throwback to 90s shooters. Has everything you need, secrets, guns and gibs. The movement is great, granting you a terrific sense of momentum as you slay an endless wave of monsters. Level design kept surprising me. Definitely worth the $20

This game is almost good. The best 6/10 I've played in recent years. Does it feel much like Doom? No. Is the action fun? Yes!

But the story is a total joke. The gameplay is frequently interrupted by cutscenes. Worse, many of these cutscenes are in first person perspective, and involve your character doing something cool like firing a gigantic weapon... but YOU don't get to do that. You're forced to watch. It takes all the fun out of these big moments.

When it comes to the level design, Most of the "unique locations" feel more like a Dark Souls environment than Doom. The platforming mechanics never flow with the combat. It reminds of the old game FEAR, where you would alternate between horror sections and combat sections. Except instead of being scared by a terrifying creature, you are repeating the same jumping puzzle over and over and over. Each puzzle is simply "Where is the next climbable spot I can jump to?".

And for whatever reason the developers decided that the player should never, ever, have enough shotgun ammo. Yes, Yes, use the chainsaw. Then you end up being able to fire your super shotgun... maybe 10 times? I like the idea of swapping weapons, but the ammo limits are laughably low.

There are at least 3 forms of currency the game. THREE. You use these to level up your character, but None of the upgrade options are interesting. It's a muddled, confusing mess, that takes you away from blasting demons.

All of this is excusable, because the combat is really quite fun. The soundtrack is GROOVIN'.

But then the developers had to go and add an extremely invasive form of DRM to the game, months after release. The DRM Lowered my performance by about 25%. All of a sudden the game started to crash frequently. Why is this necessary for a single player game?

Oh, because I forgot to mention, at every inch of the game Bethesda is trying to cram micro transaction ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ down your throat.

Simply put: This is not worth full price. With the addition of Denuvo, I would reccomend skipping it entirely. Just go replay Doom 2016 or Doom II instead. I will be asking for a refund, although its unlikely I will get it as I've played through a decent amount of the game's content. Do not make the same mistake I did!
