First of all I would like to say I have 16 days (384 hours) in the pre-steam release of this game. And that's in battles not including menu time.

This game is free (if you want it to be) and enjoyable. You can buy premium squads but I would say none of them are better than fully upgraded free to play squads. Some of the premium squads have unique units or interesting game play mechanics though so buy them if you want. Its quite hard at first until you unlock some better weapons and squads but don't let that discourage you!
