Review from someone who enjoys Paradox games but never really got into Civ

I've tried getting into Civ 5 and 6 so many times, but they never really clicked for me, no matter what approach I took. But for some reason, Civ 7 just works, and I’m really enjoying it. The game clearly needs more work, it feels like an early access or beta version of the full game, but I’m still having fun because the core gameplay loop is really engaging.

Things I Like

  • No more builders! I love expanding the city directly instead of running around with units just to build things.
  • The meta progression and unlocks are really fun and lead to interesting builds.
  • Age transitions make each run feel fresh.
  • Separating Cultures and Civs adds variety and makes for fun builds.
  • Random events are enjoyable, even if they always boil down to picking between two bonuses.
  • The UI isn’t cluttered in the late game, which was one of my biggest issues with Civ 5 and 6. In Civ 7, everything is clear and easy to read.
  • Combat is actually fun.
  • The art style and graphics are fantastic.
  • The tutorial/path system for each victory type is a great tool for new players or people who don’t know what goal to pursue.
  • Diplomacy is fun, and allies actually help you out.
  • AI is overall solid.

Things That Could Be Better

  • I don’t mind the UI’s art style, but it feels super blank and lacks identity—like it was made in a week as a placeholder. No animations, no visual effects, barely any color, it’s just empty.
  • World generation is absolutely terrible, and it’s my biggest issue with the game. Every map feels the same: there’s always one or two walls in the middle of the ocean, the second age always has two big islands, and no matter what world type you pick, you always know where everything will be. That really kills the exploration aspect.
  • Unit icons are awful, like placeholders straight from 3D modeling software.
  • There’s no unit or commander list, which is frustrating when you have tons of units in the late game. The icons can easily get hidden behind others.
  • AI settles cities in completely random, nonsensical locations, even right in the middle of other Civs’ empires.
  • The game hides way too much data. You don’t even know what you’re losing when you build over an existing structure, unless you use mods.

PS: Sukritact's Simple UI Adjustments & tcs-ui-improved-plot-tooltip are must-haves to actually enjoy the game.

The Good

  • The new graphics update is great. It makes the game feel even more alive than before and gives everything a refreshing, shiny, brand-new look. They really nailed it.

  • Dungeons and Trials are really great and refreshing, with many new and interesting mechanics to solve. It makes me even more hyped for Savage fights.

  • The new animations and skill effects are really pretty and make your favorite job feel more alive.

  • Many quality-of-life improvements have been added, which is always nice.

  • Two (Eventually 3) very fun and unique jobs.

  • The new zones look absolutely stunning visually. The developers have done a fantastic job with the aesthetics and graphics. There are no invisible walls within each zone (except when traveling between them), which makes the entire world feel much more open and free.
Mixed

  • The MSQ moves pretty slowly, which might disappoint players used to a faster story, even compared to older FF14 MSQ before Dawntrail. The focus on Wuk Lamat might not be everyone's cup of tea and could affect how much you enjoy it if you're not into that character. (Of course, this is all subjective and could vary depending on your own playthrough and preferences.)

  • The expansion (at least so far in 7.0) and the overall game are still pretty much the same deal - same type of content, same playstyle, and all that. Square Enix is just sticking to what works instead of taking any big risks.

DMZ is fun and can be a bit stressful but thats about it. There isnt much to do and when you die, you dont really lose anything. DMZ needs to be a bit slower, have less AI and make it so gear actually matters, so there is some gear fear. Right now, there is no such thing as "Gear Fear". Every round is the same. But it has good potential. Hopefully they will work on it and get it done.

Battle Royale / WZ 2 is meh. It was supposed to be the "CoD Battle Royale" reborn but its pretty much just WarZone 1 on MW2 engine (Which is not bad, the MW2 engine is S tier, great and hopefully will be used in other CoDs titles in next years). That being said the WZ2 is just blank. There are things to do but there is almost nothing new. Gun play is nice, audio is nice, graphics are nice but thats all because of MW 2, not Warzone. It didnt really come with anything new when it comes to gameplay and BR is all about gameplay. (But plus for proxy and general chat)

But, its free, so feel free to try it out and see how things are.

Great game, 100% Worth getting. It is not perfect but it is worth the money already and it will get better with time as well (More Features, mods, new content and much more). For someone who loves politics, laws, economy and such more, this is must have game. To me, it is the ultimate PDX game.
