The worst offender - UI
There are two things I know for sure.
There is a cold place in hell reserved for anyone that microwaves a fish at work
and the UI team for this game deserves to be beaten with that microwaved fish.

I found learning adobe premier pro to be easier than whatever nested hell whole this game has to offer.
The biggest challenge of this game is trying to figure out which menu the game is actually asking you to go to, or why it takes 3 button presses to do sometime simple like...heal.
If you are not familiar with this games menu system,..you have been warned

Outside of that..

Boss Designs - 15/10.
This game does have some fantastic bosses, some absolutely stunning designed monsters I have ever seen.
I would argue that the game doesn't get super hard until much later in the game. I forget the types but if they have a Alpha or Beta by their name, they do offer a considerable challenge. Outside of it, it's actually a ton of fun to discover a new monster and let them dazzle you with all their flashy moves.

World Design - 8/10
Standard open worldish pretty levels.

Core mechanics - 7/10
If you have never played a game like this before...it will be challenging. Each weapon is designed to be used very specifically. you kinda have to watch a youtube video or so to figure out what you are expected to do. Just button mashing will result in bad times. It's not hard to pick up. The game just does a bad job at fully explaining to you what to do.

Co-op features - -30/10
Dear Developers. Here is how co-op should work. I want to invite my friend. Send request - >play
Here is how this games co-op works
1. Add friends via steam
2. Add them to a party link.
3. Start a quest. Oh wait, you are doing a story mission? your friends also need to do the same mission? Want to experience it at the same time? F@#k that...we got something harder for you to do
4. Each player needs to go through the cut scenes, start a fight, and then invite their friends to the match. Another friend still hasn;t go through the cutscenes well to bad. they can't join you.
5. But wait...if you want you can create a different group so that anyone in the group will get auto invited to your matches...as long as they have played the main quest before. So the only people who can really join in, are your friends who have progressed much further into the game
6. enjoy playing with friends who have better gear and armor and do all the work for you

Overall - I am (for now) still having fun (when I don't have to figure out which 6 menus I have to go to to invite a friend )
If you are new to monster hunter, this game may be the most approachable it ever has been,
if you hated the previous monster hunters because of ♥♥♥♥ ui and what feels like clunky controls...this game may make it more tolerable...but it still is very rough around the edges

tl;dv
It's a monster hunter game. The UI, Tutorials, and Matchmaking has been designed by people who insist on entering and leaving a house via the chimney. Doors are for suckers.

tl;dv #2 But the weapons feel better. and the designers outdid themselves with some of the monster designs.

tl;dv #3 - please read this in the spirit it was written. Laughing and crying at the same time.

Tried playing it after a long time.
It's still the same sh#$
Cheaters everywhere.
Controllers are op.

And their ranking system makes no sense.
Just overcrowded with try hards

If you are looking for a casual game to have fun with your friends. this is not it.

Do you want to test your friendships and figure out which ones hate you the most?
Want to learn how bad at team communication you are?
Want to laugh as your team mate throws a dish away that you painstakingly created?

This is the game for you.

I personally only play this with close friends. Couch coop feels better than online. But it's still a ton of fun.

If you don't have patience...and you don't like loosing, and you hate taking orders from your friends.... don't play this game.

You will LIKE this game if you like:
Open world. LOT's to explore. Variety of mini games (hunting, fishing, gambling, etc). Character rich, and has a decent story.

this game will be ANNOYING if you:
Want to get through the story quickly. if you are hoping to get a good shooting game (don't play this on a controller.) The shooting and cover based mechanic feels like they ripped it of GTA 3...old. buggy..not satisfying at all. This game wastes a lot of time...and I mean a LOT of time to get going.

The core loop is as follows.
Step 1: Start at Point A
Step 2: Go to point B to trigger a quest which usually will take anywhere between 2-15 real time minutes
Step 3: Trigger a cut scene..which can be summarized as "Go to point C, Kill people"
Step 4: Start Riding a horse to point C usually accompanied by NPC's who will monologue while you stare at a horse's behind and watch it poop. Takes about another 3-15 mins to reach destination
Step 5: Reach point C. A gun fight will trigger...usually anywhere between 10-40 people will be killed.
The shooting mechanic is terrible. so you will end up drinking snake oil..and using the dead eye to get no skill headshots.
Step 6:After the gun fight one of 2 things will happen.
Stay at the battle scene, and spend 30 mins looting all the bodies
Or chase down someone and kill them.

Now go back to Step 1. Do this for the next 80+ hours.
Basically you will end up spending 20-40 mins on one quest...and for me..it was unsatisfying

At it's BEST
The world is beautiful. there are more details in this game that you can imagine. The story and characters can be interesting. Tons of breadth.

At it's WORST
Massive time sink with no depth in game play. Yes you can do tons, but most of it turns into "Now click this button! well done you clicked correctly!". I think there was a good story here somewhere...but I can't remember it...because the open world game keeps distracting you with other things to do. I think I started this game 2 years ago..and finally finished it. I remember like 3 good-memorable levels. The rest of it is a blur. just tons of gunfight and loud noise.
There are way too many animations in this game...which means there will be times where the game just plays it self....you are just pressing a button to trigger the unskippable animation

Do you want to spend hours and hours shooting random bots while a jack ass keeps screaming instructions to you over the mic? Boy is this the game for you!

The UI is terrible
The menu's are terrible
The unlimited barrage of bots - pointless

Play for hours and hours and hours to unlock weapons and mods so that you can do the same s@#$ over and over again...

The core mechanics are great.

But if you are new to the game. the game will punish you. Griefers are everywhere. They don't care about doing any of the riddles. They do not care about getting loot. They want to keep attacking you (not your ship) until you rage quit.

And the devs don't want to change that aspect of this game.

In the 3 hours I played, I did the following:

1.Died 14 times
2. lost 2 ships
3. Sailed to 1 island.
4. Collected one tressure
5. Died another 15 times
6. Lost the 3rd ship.

Seriously. Don't get this game if you have no patience for dealing with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ griefers.

Overall
The story is great.
The combat simple and satisfying.
You should get this game if you want to play a great story.

The good
The story. It is a unique story (for a shooter). The game is short enough (6 hours) that it almost feels like a movie. What I thought was going to be a simple "shooter" turned out to be a solid mind F$%k. Some people will probably replay the game over and over again to pick up tiny details and piece together what happened.

The so so
The combat is not that great. Not bad. But not great. It was more of a reflex test (as is most cover based shooters). but the head shots were very satisfying.

The bad
The controls on PC can feel very...2006. On a mouse and keyboard it can feel unplayable. I had to download a decryptying software so that I could lower down the mouse sensitivity. There is also a weird bug where when you are zoomed in through a scope, the vertical movement just stops...making it very hard to aim up and shoot the head. Also the cover based mechanics can sometimes bug out and lead to frustrating moments.

I am being super nitpicky. The worst thing about this game is the glitchy controls. It doesn't really take away from the whole experience. But buyer be warned, it can ocasionally get super annoying.

The Good
The combat can be challenging and fun. Reminds me of D&D.
The game offers a ton of choice, and freedom. There is no one way to solve a problem. So people who enjoy re-playability will enjoy this game.

The Bad
The UI and interface is awful. The freedom of choice also means you will run around like a headless chicken for hours. You will pick up 20 missions at the same time...but not be able to solve 90% of them till much later.

The game loop goes like this

1. Walk around town and talk to all NPC's to figure out who wants to offer you a quest. (that's correct, there are no indicators, you have to talk to everyone to figure out if they offer a quest)
2. Pick up quest (after talking to an npc for like an hour)
3. go to point A, and investigate/murder/talk to someone
4. Go to point B, fight and insane battle
5. Die
6. Reload checkpoint and try again
7. Read walkthroughs on what the heck you are supposed to do.
8. Realize you are considerably under leveled.
9. Abandon the quest and try a different quest
10. Go back to point 1.

You literally have to do this. Over and over again, until you can progress with the story.
And guess what. Point A and Point B are separated by 10 mins of walking. I played it for 33 hours, and I am still stuck at the first map. I have tried 4 different builds, and min maxed characters and still not been able to get passed a certain boss in their underwear.

The Ugly
The game offers a lot of choice. This also means you can F$%k yourself over completely.
There will be some boss fights that you can't win (unless you get lucky) or have the exact right build.
I have seen videos of people hiding from an entire battle (because they are rogues) and killing the boss easily. Same fight with a different class...not possible. The difficult spike is annoying, and not being able to level up easily make it even harder.

Who should get this game
You enjoy reloading checkpoints
You have all the patience of the Dalai Lama
You like reading walkthroughs
You are okay to restart the game with different characters to make the game a bit easier.

Who should NOT[/] get this game[/b]
you have NO patience
you have NO intention of reading walkthrouhgs to figure out the simple basics (like how to level up a skill more than once)
you don't like turn based combat
you don't like/b] trial and error and reloading checkpoints

Overall
A good remake. They made a few changes to the story, and the new voice actors make it feel like you are playing a slightly different game. Hits the right nostalgia buttons, at the same time does not feel stale.

Who should buy this game
If you liked the original Mafia you will like the remake (for the most part). The controls and gun play feel smoother, and the new graphics look great.

What it is good at

Good for casual gaming. Beautiful planets, Amazing creatures, Good time sink when you just want to relax.

What it needs

Better flight controls: It's too easy right now. It needs more complexity in its flight. You can manuver straigt, and roll, that's it. The fights in space seem to be all about, who has the better shields. Dog fighting is almost not possible.

More planet variety: While there are many many planets, each planet is essentially 1-2 textures. All planets have just one characteristic. Its either a forest like planet, or its a dead planet etc. The planets are huge, but after you have see 10 feet of it, you have pretty much seen all of it!

What it is really bad at

Balancing it's act. Okay, so you have huge planets, huge universe, but the spacestations only have 1 room...really?

Better Economy system: Something I find very irritating, is that the gameplay is pretty much, mine stuff, make more money, then fly to other places. I think it needs more. It gets tedious very very quickly,

CONTROLS: the game does not support flight controls, as in flight sticks. and it should.

bottom line

If you like casual space sims, get it.
If it is discounted, get it.
If you want to spend hours aimlessly looking at interesting creatures, get it.

If you are expecting anything other than a "travel here and look at stuff game" don't get it.
