RNG Trash..

I bought this game years ago, around 2017, and since then I have only 5 hrs of playtime in this piece of trash for a reason.

No pros, only cons, and I'll list them for you:

  1. ♥♥♥♥ attempt at "story", if you can call it an attempt.. or a story.

  2. Garbage visuals, level design is just a building and it's somehow THE most boring building in existence.

  3. RNG garbage. Nothing pisses me off faster than RNG based "to hit chance" nonsense, and this game excells at it. You'll miss a million hits, enemies won't. So much fun. This is XCOM's RNG miss on steroids.

  4. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ "survival". It is one of those games which have survival elements poorly thrown in with zero attempt at making any of them fun or worth wasting time on. Yeah, I love running around collecting exciting items like.. sugar.. and leek.. or tomatoes.. so I can make a nice hearty meal every few ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ seconds, since the MC is apparently diabetic. ♥♥♥♥ off.

Hilariously, if you go read negative reviews of "I Am Future", a game by same devs released in 2024, it has same complaints about "survival" elements about feeding the PC. Developers literally learned nothing in 10 years, and are just doing the same thing even now.

I bought this game ages ago, and like most people, I didn't play it for a long time since I have a huge library of unplayed games. Refunding it was never an option. FML.

Save your money, even if this is dirt cheap. Spend it on coke or something..

Wild Trash & Abandoned..

I purchased this in 2020, and since I'm going through my library trying to play games I backed during Early Access, I played some more of this garbage. Which brings me to a unique observation about this developer.

Abandoning games seems to be a common theme for Lavaboot Studios.

First with Salt, then with this. I bought both games to support a Indie dev, bought this one thinking the dev might do better after learning from first experience, add better gameplay, better world development, better level design, etc., but I was wrong on all accounts.

This should be a short review, since there isn't much worth reviewing before I bin this game into my "trash" folder on Steam, never to touch it again (getting as much attention as dev puts in his games).

CONS:

  1. BORING WORLD: If you thought that a theme of wild-west & wizards would bring some exciting clash in interesting locales, think again.

Truth be told, I didn't really think the premise for this game was anything interesting (found it childish) when I first saw it, but supported the development by buying it, thinking the developer had some unique idea to wow us. But nope. It seems to be a thing, either because "Wild West & Wizards" has WWW in the title or the name just rolled of the tongue quite well enough? Who knows.

The point is, this developer somehow managed to turn this unique setting into one of THE most generic settings in existence.

You won't find interesting locations, won't encounter interesting enemies, or spells/weapons. The world is mostly a dead, barren wasteland with nary a tumbleweed in sight. How droll.

Seems like Salt all over again.

  2. ABANDONED DEVELOPMENT: Playing this game feels like playing their previous game, Salt.

It feels like somebody had an idea, but failed to properly put it into action, then abandoned it because of boredom.

Like Salt, this whole game feels unfinished, as you keep running around in some of the most boring locations ever, pointlessly killing same boring enemy models over and over again. The feeling of "This HAS to be Early Access" never leaves your mind, as you run around doing some of THE lamest quests Bethesda would be proud of.

And in typical fashion. Developer abruptly stopped the development and moved on. Not even pretending to have some interesting content update or DLC planned, just the generic soundtrack DLC indie's bundle to make some extra cash on an already overpriced game ($15, which is a joke for the amount of content and effort this trash of a game has).

Suffice it to say, this will be my last purchase from Lavaboots Studios.

Early Access Review
This game feels like work.

I bought this back in 2017, after having this on wishlist for a while and following drama with the development. Played it for an hour, hated it, thought it was in Early Access so they would improve it.

Years down the road, 2025, trying it again and.. this still feels like work.

The primary issue that existed back in 2017 is still there. The UI/UX is total and utter garbage, the combat is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful and everything this game does can be done better in FPS view zombie survival game, except with more immersion.

The combat especially is so bad that it's a major turn-off. If the combat was fun like Diablo 2, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, then I would actually enjoy the game, but the way it's done here is so awful. They have never fixed the controls. The fanbase loves what it is so I doubt it they'll change it ever, but that doesn't really mean I have to like it.

I might TRY to play this game a few more times to see if I can get less annoyed by the combat and and UI/UX. Depending on how it goes, I might change the review in the future to positive (if I don't, you know how it went).

EDIT: I tried to play it again, this time in builder difficulty, but I just can't.

The world is way too uninteresting and all you do is.. eat, drink, wash, sleep and kill. I'm sure that's very exciting gameplay loop for the fans but, considering how boring the world itself is, I just can't be arsed to do this. Then again, I find such pointless survival "slider-watchers" boring in any other game as well these days, so chances of this game impressing me with this stale survival style are none.

Meh. Not for me. I guess I was in a different mindset when I bought it back in 2017. There are no good zombie games (still aren't) so that could've been the reason for me going for this and supporting the development. Oh well..

EDIT 2: Tried again.

Sneak around > kill a zombie or two > get inside and loot > cook > eat > drink > wash > sleep > read something (and by that, I mean watch sliders move). That's the whole game in 3.9 hrs. I know there is base building and all that jazz as well, but I don't really care that much about grown virtual plants and trees unless it's a game like Stardew Valley (mostly cause this game already feels like a chore without that element).

I'm thinking, I'll try custom sandbox difficulty next and lower the zombie to the lowest possible, without removing them. Because ironically, Zombies are the biggest drawback of the game called "Project Zomboid", all thanks to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ combat (again, devs had Diablo and Grim Dawn to copy combat from, yet they went with.. this).

If there are only a few Zombies, I can explore more and not get bored trying to just eat and drink while sitting in same spot, watching sliders move for hours.

EDIT 3: I uninstalled Zomboid.

I know I kinda said I would try sandbox, but I just installed Void Bas_tards (which I bought ages ago) and started playing it. 3 hrs in, I realized that game was ten times more fun than even 30 mins inside Zomboid, so I uninstalled Zomboid and binned it into a category where I just dump games I'll never touch. Goodbye.

PS: I might try to play it a bit more to see if I'm missing something. Give it another try.

PPS: I played again, EDIT 2 is the update. I'll now try sandbox difficulty.

PPPS: I uninstalled Zomboid.

Paradox maintains the position on being the scumiest P.O.S publisher in existence.

They banned me from Prison Architect forums for daring to complain about their buggy-ass DLC releases, ruining the game, and now they're busy doing their scummy nonsense all over again.

Instead of updating this game, just package the updates as a"RELAUNCH", even though the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ relaunch looks pretty much the same. But wait, you get to pay for more DLC's in this new relaunch, that's the whole reason it exists. They decided to milk an old game to sell more content instead of fixing the game and improving it.

♥♥♥♥ Paradox, ♥♥♥♥ Haemimont Games. Blocked Paradox ages ago and haven't bought anything from them for a while now, will be doing the same for Haemimont. Developers, don't pick Paradox as your publisher.

I'll play this game (since I payed for it), but these companies are never getting a single buck out of me, ever.

4 hrs in, you're done.

Just to be clear, I have more than 4 hrs because I buy games like these to play while I watch videos on secondary monitor (documentaries or YouTube drama). So these games are pretty much meant to be filler, like Vampire Survivors is, quality can be average as long as they keep me entertained enough.

This game is over in 4 hrs or less. You have unlocked everything, you have made enough money to buy Tesla or become rich like Musk. The "competition" in this game is rolling in dough, trillions of dollars in the bank (yeah) and you, a guy in a small studio or with 4-6 people, is going to match that income in no time.

Yes, this game is THAT stupid.

There is no logic, there is no creativity, it's a shallow garbage copy of Game Dev Tycoon. It isn't even close to that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Game Dev Story from Kairosoft (and their games are BAD), not even close to the average Mad Games Tycoon. Nah, this game is at the bottom of the game dev barrel.

The fact that this game doesn't have a negative rating on Steam says a lot about the average Steam gamer. I'm guessing most are just happy "mobile gamers" playing such trash 24/7, so rate this nonsense highly on PC.

My only regret? I had the option to refund this 1.8 hrs in. Actually no, I had the option to refund when I launched the game and character creator shows nothing but a sea of white characters to select from. The portraits might look brown, but the characters are all white. You can't customize anything and selecting any model doesn't come with pros or cons, so it's entirely pointless. You know at one point they thought about letting you change skin color at-least, but didn't think it was important enough to ship the game with, along with actual fun gameplay.

Anyway, I thought about refunding it 1.8hrs in, but decided to keep it thinking it would keep me busy enough while I watch videos on the side. I was wrong. 5 hrs in, I can't stomach this ♥♥♥♥, uninstalling.

Honestly, I would recommend this game if it wasn't a broken mess with worse UI/UX I've seen in a Tycoon game.. um.. maybe in last few months.

Game hasn't been fixed, developers abandoned it and moved on.

Meanwhile, bugs galore.

Trains sometimes don't show up, your staff can't be selected once seated, items can't be sold or moved, rooms cannot have doors moved (forcing you to create entire new room, move items painfully.. if they are allowed to be moved), etc.

The UI/UX is a nightmare, designed like it was designed for gamepads or mobiles, not for PC. You can't even tell if you are missing lights because of the crappy lighting, until the customers start complaining about "gloomy" station, which doesn't make any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense when you are building overground stations (also, won't the underground stations be pitch black then?).

I can keep listing the issues with this game, but the fact that the developers never bothered fixing or improving this game, says a lot about how much they care about their own work in the long run.

PS: If you see any gameplay hours after this review, it doesn't mean the game is suddenly good. It means I'm trying to squeeze entertainment out of something I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ paid for and can't refund.

Before we begin, you see the GIF? The GIF is sped up, the actual gameplay is slow as ♥♥♥♥ and boring.

------------

You know the game is bad when you forget the name of the game for a long time, only to remember it when someone mentions it in another review on some other game, years down the road.

I last played this game in 2023, only have 23 hours in it because I was trying to get all achievements while getting bored to death, unable to refund it. I ended up uninstalling it when the last 3 achievements were left, because they made no sense (something about ranks) and game didn't tell you how to complete them.

Gameplay is trash, slow, all mechs are unsatisfying along with generic enemies with zero personality. There are so many mechs and not a single one of them is satisfying to play as. It doesn't help that the whole game has THE trashiest SFX I've heard in a while with laziest weapon particle effects in existence.

Should I even bother talking about how generic and lazy the abilities and pick-ups are? They feel like they belong in some trashy mobile freeware.

Basically, this game feels like "Baby's first Survivors clone". Not sure why this has Very Positive rating on Steam, but it seems to be a common theme with Survivor's clones.

-----------

Oh and this game feels unfinished. From the buggy UI that looks like the dev got bored half-way through, to the achievements which seem to be confusing (Reach Number One rank.. in what? There is no in-game rank like this) and can't be achieved without you wasting time on the forums.

Checking the dev store page, there is a sequel to this game which just looks like an update that should've been released for the first game. So the dev actually abandoned this game to package and release the update as a whole new game. That game has like 12 reviews because instead of building a good first game, dev went for more money and abandoned his previous project, pissing off customers.

Hilariously, if you look at the sequel, the negative review from "Icon of Sin" guy pretty much describes the first game: https://steamproxy.com/profiles/76561199098313470/recommended/2821970/

You know why? Because IT IS THE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FIRST GAME.

Mewnbase? Borebase? Whatever this mobile trashware is.

It is one of those games where the developer was trying to copy thousand other "survival" games but with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cat theme (I think I bought it on discount without thinking).

Game world is boring, visuals suck, nothing interesting but you just constantly working against the clock to build pointless ♥♥♥♥ to stay alive. That's all this game is.

Another trash survival game on Steam. Oh and the developer ditched the development, released 1.0 and ran.

Bought it and refunded it in less than an hour.

Game doesn't work. It launches and closes.

Developers don't care enough to fix it, so don't waste your money.
