Long story short:
Great game mechanically but those same mechanics are dragged down by arse-backwards limitations, neglect and at this point (2021) devs greed.

Long story long:
D2 was a game that always got me curious but never got into properly. Having some friends to play with gave me the motivation to jump in. And I have to say, it was a nice start. Good FPS mechanics, quite generous loot without a mind-numbing grind (looking at you, Warframe), nice lore, PvP that definitely scratches my arena-shooter itch. It had all the good stuff. But ... after half a year later, the game started rearing its ugly head. PvE started feeling a little repetitive although that happens with every game like this, PvP turned from enjoyable to downright frustrating because of cheap ability combos, horrid connection issues (Black Ops 2 in 2012 had better P2P netcode), a friend of mine who started with me at the same day but played way less than me was basically lost in the game which resulted in him losing motivation to keep going etc.

Come Season 15 and massive reworks. Started digging into the game again and let's be honest, starting a season with your main seasonal playlist working from 50% (1 activity bugged completely and another had a high chance of bugging out) didn't give a good impression for longevity. Later down the line, the rework of "famous" Trials showed that devs have no idea what to do with that mode. Is it a loot cave? Is it meant to be competitive? A mixture of both? Who knows

All of that combined with the fact, that Gambit one of the core playlists has basically completely neglected before the new expansion. Which at the point of this review is still 2 months away while Gambit has been basically a rotting corpse for way longer.

But enough rambling, let's put it into points

Pros
  • Great gunplay ... All weapons feel really well and many are satisfying to use (those crispy hand-cannon 3-taps in PvP are hard to match in other games
  • Great lore and quests ... The game has an amazing setting to build upon with a lot of memorable characters

But this is where pros end

Cons
  • Long-standing technical issues ... PvP netcode is absolutely atrocious. Players teleporting around, melee attacks whiffing, melee trades are absolutely a common occurrence. Something I've personally never experienced in any other PvP game.
  • Negligence of core activities ... As mentioned before, Gambit basically feels like a seasonal activity that the dev forgot to remove after the season ended. PvP is on massive life-support even now after the Trials rework because no new content is being made (sorry but I can hardly count reused maps, especially after almost 2 years of literally nothing).
  • No explanation of core mechanics ... What is armour modding? How do champions work? What is the use of armour stats? Anyone? If you're a new player, the game tells you nothing about these. When I say that Warframe has a better new player experience (which is not a high bar, to be honest) it's quite telling.
  • Artificial limitations to enforce grind ... Speaking of armour mods, armour in the game has elemental affinities which limit mod usage. This wouldn't be a big problem if switching the affinity didn't cost quite a hefty price in materials some of which aren't exactly easy to come by. So you either need to have tons of materials stockpiled or have 4 sets of armour with decent stats. And that's not counting exotics.
  • Content Vaulting ... Look, I get it. Maintaining a massive game like this is difficult and devs weren't ready for it. Hence why they had to "vault" certain content to update the engine. This I could understand. But on the other hand, I've yet to hear about a dev that did a similar thing because of technical reasons ... hmmm

All in all, as I said before, the game is really good mechanically and definitely scratches the right itch for many. But the issues above, combined with the current blatant greed of the developer (sorry, but $25 for barely a season worth of content is just disgusting) force me to give the game a hard thumbs down
