Dark Souls III feels like a mirage in a desert after the monotone emptiness of single player games that might be open, beautiful, and immersive with both a great story and great gameplay. Unfortunately, their story always ends. Just like the anti-climax after completing a great book. It’s a certain sadness over such a loss, but also an emptiness because of what used to give you entertainment no longer does. It was just a story you got told or told yourself, and when it is done, it’s DONE.

This is where Dark Souls III differs. It is not just one story, it’s many, and how many and how they end is up to you. It incorporates an ambiguous story with a dark and adrenaline pumping, nerve wrecking, angst for what you are going to face around the next corner. All the while the feeling that you must avoid dying because of what you might lose. Now here comes what makes Dark Souls III REALLY unique. You can do all this while sharing it with friends and foes that join you or you join, or that invade you, or maybe you are the one invading, hunting down others for their precious embers?

Whatever path you choose, you will end up with many stories and a strong sense of accomplishment. Some stories will be made while alone, others can be shared with strangers and maybe with friends communicated only via a few gestures that cover the most basic emotions. You will affect other people and other people will affect as you travel across this strange and brutal land. You will die, and if you stick around you will learn to deal with it, most likely grow on a more personal level.

For myself, I needed this game. It got everything I didn’t even know I wanted. It is a perfect 10. And if I were to recommend only one game, this would be it.
