The gimmick made it sound interesting, but that's as far as it goes, it really doesn't get any more engaging besides the typing novelty, which wears off quickly. And it can get pretty frustrating in higher difficulties due to the tight time window to go and grab the bible.
I suggest buying it on a hard discount and playing it until you get tired.

A Hat in Time is probably one of the most polished modern platformers I've seen in a really long time. Everything about this game's design is near perfect. Combine that with an also perfect kinesthetic and a lot of charisma and you got the second best platformer of the decade (the first being Rayman Legends, wich is also the best platformer ever).

The game's not only almost perfectly designed but also feels perfect to move around with Hat Kid. When the only action of moving you character is fun, then you got half the work complete. It's so satisfying just to jump between platforms, get collectables and kill some enemies.
Everything about this game is brilliant. I feel like it took the Mario 64/Sunshine formula of open levels with specific missions assigned to each one and polished it to an insane degree.

At the moment of writing this review I completed 67% of the game (also beat the final boss) and I'm planning on 100%ing it. And I say this as someone who almost never 100% completes his games.

If you like platform games, please, buy this masterpiece of videogame design. Gears for Breakfast completely deserve your money and time.

This is not what we expected for years. There isn't any sign of a progression system, the game's just killing monsters just because.
Levelling system is gone, reduced to a simple number and nothing more, levelling up doesn't give you anything more than some stats buffs that you wouldn't even notice if the game didn't tell you that they're there.
The only progression that the game has is by collecting some gear and "artifacts". The thing is, gear and artifacts are region locked, so they only work if you stay in the region you got them. I don't really know why Wollay decided to implement that limitation (I can theorize that it's made this way to avoid players from getting OP gear though), and it's so sad that he just didn't keep the classic RPG system that the game suppossedly was going to have and had in the old alpha from 2013.

This game is the biggest bait I took in my entire life.
It starts pretty good, with charismatic characters and a big level with tons of things to do (and also has Shovel Knight in it). The game is very fun, until you reach level 2 and it just starts to fall apart with tedious collectables, boring level design and minigames, and it just starts to feel like Banjo-Kazooie, but in a bad way.
Banjo-Kazooie hasn't aged like wine precisely, but it's a game from 1998. Yooka-Laylee feels even older than Banjo and it is 20 years younger.

Also, it seems like it only tries to replicate Banjo's original success and tries little to nothing to improve the formula. Neither takes any risks nor tries to bring something new to the table. It's just a mediocre and conservative Banjo rip-off.

You want an actual good 3D collectathon? Play A Hat in Time or Super Mario Odyssey then. Yooka is not worth your time and money and it won't be remembered as time passes unlike his superior older brother Banjo.
