Because everyone loves B.J.'s... I mean B.J Blazkowicz...

Wolfenstein the New Order is the reboot of the long standing franchise as envisioned by Machine Games. Wolfenstein is credited as being the first ever stealth game with Castle Wolfenstein from 1981, and it's sequel, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein from 1984. The most famous game, and the one veteran FPS players remember the most is Wolfenstein 3D by ID Software, a title that was a revolution at the time, and ID's first venture into the FPS world, even before the almighty Doom. Wolfenstein was a pioneer in 3D gaming for PC's back in the day, and The New Order respects it's heritage by taking the franchise to a whole new direction.

This is the first Wolfenstein game that has a story, a well thought, engaging, thought provoking story. The plot allows for character development, and this is the first FPS that actually made me care about what happens not only to the protagonist B.J, but also with everyone he interacts with in the fight to cripple the Nazi oppression, and B.J's main antagonist, General Deathshead.

The story takes place in an alternate timeline where the nazis have won World War II. It starts in 1946, but the majority of the game takes place in 1960, 14 years after B.J goes through a traumatic experience. This is all that I am going to say when it comes to the game's story, because it truly deserves to be experienced spoiler free.

Wolfenstein is a tribute to the FPS's of the 90's, but mixed up with some modern mechanics. The end result is very satisfying, and feels both modern and retro, and in my opinion the way Machine Games pulled it off, deserves praise all on it's own.

Gameplay is over the top, violent and incredibly fun. You can dual wield every single weapon in the game, knives, shotguns, machine guns and even sniper rifles. Yes, you read that right, you can dual wield sniper rifles. I can't think of any other game that allows that. The shooting mechanics are easy to master, and the over the top violence suits the game theme well. This is a Mature rated game for a reason, there is an abundance of blood, guts and nazi brains.

The game mixes traditional shooting with stealth, rewarding both styles equally. It is up to you how you want to play the game, and you will discover that some levels are better done in a particular way. It has a perk system that allows you to unlock more abilities by performing in game actions, and these are separated into 4 different types, Stealth, Tactical, Assault and Demolition. It adds a layer of strategy that is welcome in this style of game, as far as I am concerned.

Wolfenstein The New Order uses the ID Tech5 engine, which is both a good and a bad thing, depending on who you ask. If you have a capable enough PC, you will be blown away by the detail and visual effects, particle system and the textures. This game looks amazing at 1080p with all the details on Ultra. If you have a mid range PC, you may experience texture popup, which breaks the immersion in my opinion, and poor frame rate, so be sure your machine can handle this game before you decide to buy it, it can be very resource intensive.

The music is phenomenal, and gets your adrenaline pumping when the action gets hectic. The stealth takedowns are brutal, and are not for the faint of heart. The campaign is long, and very satisfying. This is triple AAA at it's finest, and a game that deserves every penny, in my personal opinion. It also has 2 different timelines that alter some details of the main campaign, based on a decision B.J has to make early in the game, and even though it can be seen as a gimmick, it adds replayability.

Wolfenstein The New Order is one of the best shooters I have ever played, the story, mechanics, graphics, and sound offer a complete package for both veterans and newcomers. Don't miss out on this title, shooting nazis doesn't get any better than this. Kudos to Machine Games, their vision of Wolfenstein made B.J a force to be reckoned with amongst FPS heroes.

The Good

-Graphics and sound
-Story
-Thought provoking
-Shooting mechanics
-Long and varied campaign
-Dual wielding guns adds an insane amount of fun to the game
-Shoot nazis on the Moon, on a U-Boat, In London, kill mechanical dogs, and a whole army of high tech/retro enemies
-Sex scenes are both ridiculously funny and out of place, and emotionally enganging at the same time

The Bad

-Single player only, Not a problem for me, but worth pointing out

9.5/10
