This game has certainly grown over the last 3 years, and I think much for the better. With a severe lack of horde combat co-op games a la Left 4 Dead, Darktide adds something new to the formula in such a way that people who don't care about Warhammer still can enjoy it which is honestly special for the Warhammer IP. With the devs commitment to keeping up with the game and sticking to the theme of "rejects" on suicide missions, the only complaint I have is more so one with predatory game practices everywhere than specific to here, but the paid cosmetics are incredibly expensive and they have only ever gifted players free currency on one or two occasions. I highly recommend this if you enjoy hero shooters as well, the skill trees and customization from class to class is amazing.

The gameplay and gunplay are flashy and fun when they work, but to hype up a full release where you're constantly saying there's this huge reveal to give us Apex Legends with portals is a joke. I keep seeing people saying "just don't play it", and I won't, but they've been talking about giving each gamemode the same amount of support and frankly I don't want this wasted on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ BR. I sunk 26 hours into the beta and max leveled everything and now have none of the motivation to get back into the game knowing there's basically nothing new coming for a while for any of the modes I care about after a few new maps and a new weapon.

Not to mention the co-founders are cringy, nepo babies that can't handle negative feedback in their Discord.

This game has captivated me for years, I have nearly 1400 hours as of posting and I love the setting and vibes and gunplay, but ever since the "upgrade" to 1896 the game has been a travesty to play. What set this off was uninstalling and reinstalling only to have all of my controls reset and having to suffer through the options, equipment, and controls menus in order to finally get everything back to the way I had it... and it just doesn't feel the same. The fact that isn't preserved through install and that I am forced to go through menu after menu of terrible UI and makes me confused if settings were actually changed when I'm asked to save changes I don't even recall making it's just not worth it. Thanks for the memories Hunt but it will take a lot for me to really feel like I'm playing an evolution of the game it once was.

Early Access Review
Even in early access this game has provided me with about 40 hours of content (with a little bit still to go). I am really just excited to see what else the team comes up with for the game as for right now it feels super polished even before release. I would love to see more demon weapons, more elemental weapons, and more spells but again I love what is already here. I normally don't recommend anything early access, but if this game looks cool to you then I implore you to help development of this game and try it out.

I'm posting a negative review until they fix the game and it's multitude of issues. Now that the game has released and been out for a week, I feel it's fair to offer criticism where it's due. The game straight up doesn't work. The servers are so incompetent and unprepared for the players that there are issues just loading into games, particularly BTB matches. Assuming you've made it into the game, most matches will feel inconsistent, I will literally not enjoying getting kills I don't feel like I should have earned when someone melees me and I take no damage. And you can imagine how frustrating not landing melees is in general, as well as hit registration on shots making headshots(another integral part of the game) chance. Damage won't register until a full second passes. CTDs are common. Matches seem to have almost no real MMR or accurate rank system in or out of ranked playlists. TODAY they added the ability to queue for gametypes specifically and still not all of them. This doesn't even touch on the progression, challenge system, cosmetics, and store, but I think that is honestly more subjective than my previous points. The worst part? The game is actually pretty solid at it's core. The new movement options are a big yes, and almost every weapon feels unique and has it's place among the rest. Future balance and adjustments could spell a great arena shooter, and with the campaign introducing some other new tools I also believe that Forge will be a whole new realm of chaos and fun. But that's not out yet.

And there's no co-op campaign.

4/10 Shoulda had more Arbiter. (Fix the game and this will change)

It is Halo on PC.

Multiplayer is still a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess though, so this is really only in regards to campaign

This game has the potential to be something great, but sadly fails to fulfill expectations. It's no question that this game takes heavy inspiration from the Souls games, but when it tries to do what Dark Souls 3 did with indirect storytelling, challenging gameplay, and it's main story it falls short on all fronts.

The Surge does one thing almost perfectly, the combat system. Targeting limbs for parts is cool, and I like that you actually have to think in order to target the limb and effectively sever it for your reward. But, sadly, even this system is flawed. Targeting legs is almost always a pain and can make you take damage just because actually moving your target onto them is difficult. On top of this, once you find a weapon you like, you pretty much never experiment with anything else. I would have loved to have more time with each weapon because there are so few.

Now on to the other stuff, man the story could have been soooooooo good, but I, and I assume many others, was not at all surprised or even intrigued by the endgame. Without spoiling anything, all I can say about the final area is that the gimmicks and enemies introduced are clunky and it doesn't feel finished. There are also a lot of "shocker" moments strewn without, which I found to either be 1) not shocking, 2) not built up to or explained in any way afterwards, and 3) in poor taste.

All in all, this game is playable, but cheeky enemy placement, bugs on bugs on bugs, and a lack of variety damn it to mediocrity. Honestly a shame, this game has a lot of potential. If I could get a refund I would, but collectible hunting and the game itself take quite a bit of time. Consider this review an advisory if you plan on picking it up. If you can get it for $5-$10 it's worth it but any more than that I don't believe is worth it. I mean it took me 3 YEARS to finally come back to and suffer through this game, hoping for a light at the end of the tunnel, saying that maybe the next area won't be as bad, and it always was worse.

jfc, this game is really good. Soundtrack is great, gameplay is fun and really explores the platforming shooter genre and does a good job, story is followable and leaves questions that make you play more. This game is sure to give hours of fun, raging, and hopelessness... like any other game. All in all a game on my must-play list. 9.5/10
