Super fun. Love the narration and grandiose writing.

The game starts off by telling you that not only is everything your character does scripted by fate, it's actually a script he's already performed thousands of times and he's completely aware of all of the steps. And it doesn't matter because fate also dictates that it will all get undone later and he'll have to do it all over again.

Every time you meet a character that's there to feed you lore, they just straight up tell you exactly what's going to happen and why they're there, and then your protagonist responds to just be like "Yea I already know, lol, we've met before and you say this every time".

So basically it just feels like there's no point to any of it. You already know the end of the game, you have a companion who could just give you all of your powers but is withholding them because of the prophecy.

This is why any story that involves a prophecy is usually pretty stupid. Really kills any sense of mystery, discovery, or agency.

Maybe there's some huge twist that totally subverts those expectations but I didn't stick around long enough to find out because the mediocre writing does not instill any confidence that you are being led to an interesting place by a competent storyteller.

Flashback was one of my favorite games growing up, and it was fun to play it again, but I wouldn't recommend this version. The full price is very steep for what is essentially a port.

The reason I'm giving it a bad review is that the Morph enemies are really, really badly bugged in this version, to the point that it basically ruins the game. In the original game you can learn their moves and defeat them without taking damage if you're good enough. In this version, they can stunlock you endlessly with un-dodgeable attacks until you die, and there's nothing you can do about it but hope that they decide not to.

The hard mode is absurdly over-tuned, it just doubles the amount of enemies and makes them bullet sponges. That combined with the bug I described earlier means that if you want to beat it you're going to have to slog through long, boring fights, occasionally running back to the save point halfway through the battle because you lucked into a situation where you were able to deal damage to one of the six bad guys that attack you at the same time and could each stunlock you to death on their own.

Unfortunately one of the achievements requires you to play in hard mode, so if you care about that sort of thing prepare to be bored and frustrated.

Sekiro meets Hollow Knight, in a techno-wuxia setting. Very very satisfying parry/counter based melee combat and metroidvania platformer. Catpeople. Very good writing and well placed exhibition.
It's long, too! Based on the price point I kept thinking I was getting near the end only to discover I wasn't even half way through. And yet still I'm left wanting more!!

Some of the best boss battles I've ever played. Beating the final boss was an exhilarating experience. I am practically frothing at the mouth for some kind of DLC or NG+ Hard Mode with extended boss fights.

Early Access Review
Really terrific. Fair, but utterly punishing. Although it has been in active development for a long time, the developers have suddenly cranked up the heat in the last few months and are absolutely churning out huge changes in dazzling updates every couple of weeks.

A very active and talented modding community, too, that seems to be growing as the game gains popularity.

I'm only a little bit into the game but so far I can say that it seems to have all the charm and curiosity of Sunless Sea, but richer in every way, with all of its systems improved and expanded. The interactions with your crew, the opportunities for trade, the moral ambiguity of your choices and allegiances, right down to perhaps the most important improvement: movement and combat is more demanding and interesting.

Oh yea, and the sound, music, and graphics are all improved.

Whether the game will fix Sunless Sea's worst problem, the tedium of late game island hopping, remains to be seen.

I was amazed by how much this game affected me.

It took me a long time to actually try it because I found the graphics unsettling, but I finally gave it a try when I was on an Earthbound nostalgia kick.

I am so glad I did. I cannot fully articulate why without giving major spoilers, however, so if you are on the fence I simply implore you to take it on faith and play it yourself.
