I'll be straight with saying that I'm on the fence about giving this a negative review. I might come back and review this after fully finishing the game.

I'll also say that unlike others, I've not experienced any crashes yet so I can't comment on how bad that is, though I expect there will be followup patches to correct those issues anyway.

My biggest problem though is the insane amount of platforming. I stayed spoiler-free going into this and simply knew that it had elements of The Legend of Zelda, Hollow Knight, and Dark Souls. This sounded like the perfect set of games to mix together and indeed, in the very beginning of the game there are plenty of hints that this is the experience you're in for.

However, as you start getting into the story, the combat doesn't ramp up but instead the platforming does. And by platforming, I mean that if you miss a jump then you usually fall into a bottomless pit (or the equivalent of that) and lose significant amounts of life. And of course, the only way to increase your health pool is to complete shrines which are essentially ramped-up platforming stages.

You know this game is for you if you say yes to all of the following:

- Do you enjoy punishing platforming to navigate between main areas?

- Is the idea of reaching a new town boring to you, specifically because towns are usually safe spaces free from getting hurt?

- Do you instead wish you could be forced to engage in platforming exercises to navigate said towns, knowing that if you miss a jump then you'll be granted the gift of having to do all that sweet, sweet platforming all over again in order to meet whichever NPC you were originally looking for?

- Do you enjoy the idea of entering platforming sub-stages while ALREADY in a main dungeon (which, of course, is driven solely by platforming)?

- Do you basically wish someone took the saying "When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" and applied it to a video game, with the hammer being "platforming"?

I mean, to be honest, the game isn't bad. It's just that I wish they turned down the platforming dial a bit and instead focused a bit more on other core gaming mechanics (e.g. combat) to deliver a more balanced experience.

I'll also add a side note and say that items are a bit too expensive in the game. Expect to spend a fair amount of time hitting barrels to collect souls so you can buy stuff.

Buggy and lacks core features yet CD Project Red doesn't have a concrete plan to fix it.

But hey, multiplayer is on the roadmap, so at least you'll be able to experience this flaming trashpile with a friend......eventually.
