disclaimer: i had this game on itch.io and had a looot more hours there. despite what achievements may imply, i didn't get a perfect run on my first ever run LOL

this used to be one of my favorite games when i was 14 or so, and i would say it still is a fav. jocelyn reyes' music is super cool and atmospheric and perfectly sets the tone (i actually specifically came back to this game after listening to the ost on bandcamp recently). the game also looks amazing. all the bugs look just creepy enough without venturing into horror game territory. the environments also look really pretty, and the diorama style of the levels is a really sick and unique touch

the gameplay is also phenomenal and scratches all the right itches for me. the ticking clock of bugs closing in and each one you kill causing more to emerge makes for some great tension as levels turn into races to get to supplies before the bugs get to you. occasionally you'll perfectly execute some crazy strategy or flawlessly deal with some awful situation and it just leaves you feeling like a genius, it's awesome

i'd recommend playing it on hard or expert though (you can switch difficulty by starting a new game from the menu during the intro, it doesn't let u choose initially). the default "normal" mode is actually an easy mode added a year post-launch, with one of its defining features being giving you 3 action points for all characters instead of 2, which completely breaks the challenge of the game imo

but overall yeah, hard recommend. this game is a bit overshadowed by some of finji's other hits, but it's satisfied me in a way i haven't really seen many other games pull off. definitely an underrated gem

if i have to spend 3 hours trying to figure out where the fun part of the game *is*, that usually means that there's not really a fun part

i just found it kinda.... boring? idk why, the game seems solid, but about 5 hours in i just lost all motivation to keep playing. every run feels kinda same-y, which is defo not what you want out of a roguelite. like it's fun the first couple times but you just get tired of it bc there's not really much going on with the systems. a shame because i really liked union city back in the day and really wanted to enjoy this one

enjoyed it way more than the first tbh. puzzles are a lot more fun, the story feels less contrived, and the twist isn't instantly spoiled by the steam tags. can defo recommend it over the first one

ok ngl i wrote a joke review originally but i honestly wanted to write a serious one because this game has me feeling very conflicted. i like the message, the premise, and the visual style, but i don't think it's executed well. a lot of the convos felt very stilted (especially the texts. people don't text like that) which kinda detracted from the experience. like it all felt kinda artificial. i dunno. i'd say it's cheap and short enough to be worth playing to kill time, but i can't say i think it'll be an experience that sticks with me

this game is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good. they really don't make them like this anymore. multiplayer was pretty much dead when i played (and that was a few years ago) but honestly the campaign alone is so fire. wait for a sale tho, 40 dollars for a 15 year old game is kinda crazy
