Actually better than Metal Slug Awakening.

Great shmup, cool music, idk lol just want to leave a good review.
I guess there was going to be some revision or add-on but that got put on the backburner, might still come out.

If I didn't play, Dusk, Ion Maiden, Amid Evil, Quake, DOOM, DOOM 2, DOOM 64, Heretic, Hexen, Hexen 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Unreal, and like a handful of DOOM mods and conversions, then yeah I'd say its worth playing.
But I have, and all those did what HROT does better and before this game came out.
Hope you like brown and beige cause that is all the dev had access to for colors when making this apparently.

Thank god for the game play sliders and modifications because on vanilla settings its dreadful. On default settings everything takes too long to do and the balance between punishing you for failing versus rewards for succeeding is unfair. After making some adjustments like changing resource drop rates, base raid frequency, and experience lose on death, and other things, the game is actually fun, especially multiplayer.
Fun game but bad design decisions from devs, understandable considering this is their first game.
Also, updates for this game is glacial, the need to speed things a up a bit, this is the only game they are working on so what are they doing?

This game really takes a nosedive when Chapter 2 starts. The worst aspect of this game in my opinion is the level design. I found myself walking past tunnels and doors just because it was obscured by something or it was barely distinguishable from the surrounding environment, an unfortunate example of how the retro look can hurt a game. As someone mentioned on another review, 30 years ago DOOM was released and had a map feature, all you get is the Servoskull who will sometimes vaguely guide you in the right direction. Playing on Hard difficulty equates to over resilient enemies such as the Toads taking way to much to kill. The music, the weapons and mostly the visuals are really nice, but not enough to offset the poor levels and spongy enemies that suck the fun out of the game. 6/10 for me.

After 5 years and many other "Boomer Shooters" released, this is still the best in my opinion. Recently a HD pack released from the devs themselves for free in case the graphics were too rudimentary. If you are interested in the Boomer Shooter wave of games, do not pass the champion of them all.

I don't even like these types of games but this one is so good.

I can not believe the keyboard controls for menu navigation. The forced tutorial when you first play the game is annoying, no option to skip as far as I know.

Get ready for sore losers to drop out of a game at the slightest sign of struggle, or just random disconnects that other players have reported. I have also came across a aimbot user piloting GM Sniper which is fun. The skins are mostly ugly and you will get next to nothing as a free player.
