Largely subpar. Were it not for the extremely restrictive story I would adore this game. Loved it when I first got it, but after beating the mind numbingly boring first mission for the 4000th time (and the missions don't get any better, they're all pretty boring and uncreative) I got absolutely sick of the vanilla experience, and I'm someone who did nothing but play vanilla minecraft for three entire years. The modding community is the savior of this game because of how mind numbingly boring, repetitive, and restrictive the main story is. Its honestly false advertising to call this a sandbox game at some points. It also lacks any real feeling of accomplishment. Where other games let you explore, advance, and learn on your own, Starbound places physical roadblocks in your way and sends you on another boring fetch quest to get around it. Theres nothing about the vanilla gameplay loop thats fun more than once, if at all.
If you buy it, for the love of god, buy it for the mods.
Or to stare at hot star cowboys.

Nearly impossible to play. Wouldnt load my song the first time i clicked on it, had to exit and try again. Couldn't see upcoming obstacles and the meter kept flipping around and doing weird things (outside of its "tank" or whatever thats supposed to be.). I'm so used to using my mouse(I play Audiosurf almost religously) that the keys almost felt ridiculous, especially with the amount of obstacles.
