It is a masterpiece whose developing experience has shaped Frictional Games' future games.

How is Black Plague better than Overture?
It has a summarised lore where most of the parts are pretty straight forward and easy to catch on. Got more and less difficult puzzles (Which makes the game progress much interesting). The locations are much more detailed among with various new objects and new puzzles. But at a cost of removed a combat features, comes the frictional games classic monsters (run or die scenarios) that are actually smarter and scarier than the beasts in the previous game. A peculiar thing about this game is that is mocks the stereotypes of horror games in places, but you know, it does it so well that it still maintains an intimidating appearance. clarence is the goat ngl

Back to the first sentence of mine, I will say that the Overture in comparison is a walking sim compared to the Black Plague, judging by its versatile player approaches on monster situations. In general, the sequel is a lot better in expressing the lore, improved location design and puzzle interaction. Therefore the Overture is underrated but unpolished game as a whole, nevertheless it's lore mystery fulfil the Black Plague story pretty well. Judging from this I'm glad the developers have worked through their mistakes and started to move forward with their new Amnesia and SOMA titles

Frictional Games, please add some easter eggs in your future projects about penumbra, your first games deserves to not be forgotten.

The exact sequel all fans wanted! Nothing has been scrapped but instead improved. The overall immersion is much better with new ambient lighting and smoother movement.

Penumbra: a spider massacre

What can I say about the very first game from Frictional Games? It was immersive nonsense. Really, environmental storytelling sucks (excluding a few story locations you can count up to 10 fingers), monsters didn't give any creeps, and the lore itself is "mysterious" by just not telling the whole story.

Though the HPL engine was innovative at its time, therefore giving us very immersive interaction with the world. A few uncommon features like weapon interactions (hold mouse and move it) are nice for the immersion as well.

In conclusion, this is just amnesia: a machine for pigs, but a penumbra: a spider massacre. It's just feels more of a prequel to Black Plague than a whole game, and that's why I like this game. Since Black Plague won't be so interesting without filling the lore holes Overture created, it gives a lot of thoughts to think for the Penumbra universe.

Developers should really stop being perfectionists about making yet another no date major update and start making little updates one by one. Their perfectionism ruined the game's online from 80k to 1k per day.

There's literally no motivation to come back seeing the game receiving no updates in a year.

what a shame that you don't have the achievements for the choices like in the individual games. Though this is probably one of the best iconic video game series

The only bad sides of the Blue Shift is that it's too short and it's too easy on hard difficulty. There's no new enemies like in opposing horse, but it makes the game feel more welcoming like the original half life along side with familiar locations rather than being an off-setting adrian shephard fighting damned shock troopers in some deep dark facilities.

Though it is great to see more of an outside Black Mesa and a bit updated Zen. Definitely a must to play after beating half life

This was my first game I've played from Deus Ex series, and it was great!

Since it also happens to be my first action immersive sim, the game made me see what a combination of well detailed design, unique and variable gameplay and unique story can make the best gaming experience you could ever experience.

The graphics looks outdated as of 2024 but I don't really judge a game by this factor, though many of fans say about "piss filter" I kind of like it, it gives game a style that can't be forgotten (it's yellow okay, not piss)...

You NEED to play Deus ex series right now. It will prove your mind about how bad modern game industry and their titles are, compared to the immersive sim masterpiece like DE: Human Revolution.

The game is dead... Though it was amazing at its peak.
The devs gave too much resources on their mobile edition of the game. The managing and time just played their roles here. But I'd wish them the best to express their new ideas into their new project, these guys got the talent.

You should at least give it a try, but don't expect any updates or even any online on weekdays.

This is surreal that such game feels more of a horror than a puzzle game.

Though you should definitely play both games if you're into puzzles and cubes

This is probably one of the best *new* indie roguelike ever!

The game doesn't have any softlocks allowing you to beat the game at the first run.
Has a lots of classes and all of them are unique.
But it can be overwhelming at first to discover and connect the gameplay features together, though it is worth it to delve deeper into it.

The developer is always updated and listening to the community which is very nice! I want to thank him with my review for his passion developing such masterpiece!

If you ever played "The Binding of Isaac" or "Enter the gungeon" roguelikes, you should definitely give this game a try!
