If you don't spend money, deathclaws will come and eat your friends. Like all pay to win games, Fallout Shelter is a great time if you turn on cheats. It's built to make spending money feel rewarding, so opening lunchboxes without spending money can be pretty cathartic. The game as it is intended is predatory and terrible. Do not play this game if you do not intend to cheat.

One poorly timed deathclaw attack made it impossible to recover my vault. My resources and defenses couldn't stand against the waves of attacks that followed. It's a shame that an otherwise enjoyable game is built to motivate the purchase of more lunchboxes, with the additional dwellers, items, and resources they contain. Although the game is possible without participating in microtransactions, spending money makes the game a good deal easier. I personally don't enjoy having to bash my head against a wall in order to advance in a game that discourages playing for free. Of course I also suck at resource management games which colors my opinion, but the game's difficulty is motivated by a commercial need for severe resource scarcity rather than by some artistic decision about game mechanics. Even though some people may end up enjoying the game, my recommendation remains unchanged. I don't think this is a game that curious people should pick up because of its major flaws as another in the long line of mobile cash-grab games. And that's a shame because it has some charm.
