For a game that's all about its movement dynamic, this game has a terrible movement dynamic.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ piece of ♥♥♥♥ and its interrupt-what-you're-doing pseudo-multiplayer garbage. Nobody liked how it worked in Dark Souls, so let's do it again here!

It's an on-rails, cover-based shooter with excessive QTEs. Why does everyone like this game so much?

Caveat emptor: I've only attempted the co-op campaign.

The difficulty curve of this game is practically sinusoidal. It goes from very easy, to demanding, to easy, to impossible. It's pretty obvious that little to no effort was put into balancing the progression of the co-op campaign. The game looks pretty and it's a solid concept, but it's not fun to play.

Also, the controls overlap. “Use item” is the same button combo as “revive other player”, and one of the inputs in the combo is that for “grapple enemy”. In the frenzy of battle, you will very frequently end up consuming health or just grappling an enemy instead of reviving the other player, leading to many frustrating team fatalities.

This game is smarter than me, and goes out of its way to try to prove it. If you like that in a game, or if you are smarter than I am, then maybe you will enjoy Braid. I do not.

I don't care how morally twisted the storyline is. I don't care about the introspection this game can give. I'd like to care about these things and more, but the controls and gameplay are simply too poor to permit me to do so. After five hours of struggling with arguably the worst cover-based shooter experience I've ever had, I'm giving up. The struggle in this game should be between the player and their own morals and emotions, not between the player and badly-implemented cover mechanics.

Sans powers, this is the mechanical direction the Assassin's Creed series should have taken. With powers, this is a great execution of a fantastic concept. The game has given me the flexibility to approach the content from a different direction each of the three times I've played through the main story, and while the achievements seem to suggest a few preconceived notions of how a player might attack the overall problem, there's tons of room to make up your own methods. While perhaps it would be unfair to other, less linear games to call it a non-linear approach, there's not even a hint of “Press ‘F’ to pay respects” to be found here.

It doesn't hurt that even though the game is getting a little older, its art style still holds up very well, and probably will for a long time. Only the texture resolution betrays the age of the game.
