The base game is rough but once you get through it the story really grabs you. Once you start questing in Ishgard (heavensward) and onwards the game is solid.

Imagine GTA had a buggy child with Far Cry, toss in the worse AI I've seen this decade and then cherry on top it's been made by Ubisoft! Your character's background is irrelevant (aside from 1 or 2 dialogue options.), Also, there are almost no rpg elements and the enemies are bullet sponges at higher difficulties. It would be decent at best without the bugs. Even though it has some positives I cannot recommend it at all since the game is falsely advertised in my opinion.
