I am gonna start with the negative as i bought the game purely because of its soundtrack and visuals. I have a bias in that regard and i was all ready familiar with its game-play ( because of its genre ). I'm a 90s kid so i played a lot of flash games.

---------((Negative))----------

--------
Game Difficulty
--------
This is a rage game, you die and you die some more and you die, die and die and die and die. Everything kills you in one hit from getting shot by enemies, landing wrong, visibility issues ( foreground, special effects ) causes you to land wrong. There is a giant gear decal that rotates with you but its underneath your weapon icons.

As it rotates it gets red and at a specific hue, it indicates you are gonna land wrong and die. The problem is its in the lower right corner of the screen and most of the action is focused on your crosshair. This makes it more difficult to keep track of rotations and the gear thing is basically useless.

--------
Irritating Controls
--------
ALL OF THAT pales in comparison to its horrible control scheme. You have to hold a button down to turn around, left and right raises your tires ( wheelies ) and w is how you move forward. This was a huge mistake that forces you to fickle between tapping and holding keys to do different things, it doesn't flow well.

Most side scrollers use dedicated left/right buttons to move in those directions. What they should of done was had W & S for wheelies and have A & D move the bike. Where as A & D would also double as a break and automatically turn the bike. That would of made the game more comfortable to control as the majority of my deaths were due to the controls/physics.

This is exacerbated when you have to reload by doing flips and completely breaks the flow of the game.

--------
Ammo Restrictions
--------
The way you reload and how little ammo you start with, is beyond annoying. Its difficult in a tedious BS way and not in a fun fair way. You will quickly be out gunned with no ammo and there are many dead end sections where you can't reload unless you stop and turn around, which is effectively death.

Any time you HAVE to turn around to reload while in combat, usually means you won't be able to accelerate fast enough to avoid their bullets. It feels awful and stupid and a tedious waste of time, it makes A LOT of encounters a do or die. If you can't complete the section in one go, you're dead.

The combat seems to favor a slower pace, where you pick off enemies from long range, then reload preemptively. Though that tactic while valid, pisses me off because it just ruins the flow of the game. Its an irritating half-baked feeling where if you try to do a section fast you get punished for it ( ammo upgrades and additional weapons address this problem ).

--------
Visibility Issues
--------
The biggest cause of death is landing wrong, so including the first section of this review above. This section is highly related to that one. You have a serious visibility problem where some sections it zooms out really far and its hard to keep track of rotations as you are focused on your crosshair.

Another visibility problem are foreground objects that completely block the view of your character. This can happen all most anywhere, in or out of combat. Though its the least of all the visibility issues.

The biggest visibility issues is the over abundance of special effects. The blood, flash effects from guns, the particles and trails of bullets, smoke ETC. All of these effects contribute to being unable to see where you are facing when in the air. They cause you to either land wrong and DIE or make it difficult to tell if you are blocking or not. You will quickly find out you are not blocking ( while covered in blood and behind flashy effects) and then get shot and DIE.

--------((Positives))---------
------------
Soundtrack
------------
An amazing soundtrack by the singer Beícoli. I listened to the music before i even played the game and it motivated me to look into the game more. I eventually decided to get the game.

------------
Visuals
------------
Amazing visuals and style, combined with the music is just the chiefs kiss. The game also has like animated cutscenes, they look really great as the timing when they show up greatly enhances the immersion and feel of the game. Despite being a 2D game, it still manages to create that feeling of being in a world and traveling a journey.

I could watch a whole show in that style really.

------
Story
------
Really cool story with interesting characters, i feel the game and its characters really motivates you to try and help them all. The writing is really well done and is just super fun to engage with them and the world. I can't get into too many details due to spoilers and stuff but its some good sheeeeet.

--------------------------
Combat Game Play
--------------------------
Ignoring all the problems with the game's controls, the combat is very satisfying. Any time you aim (hold down shoot) it slows down time and its just fun to combo-blast your foes into oblivion. As i mentioned earlier in the review, the game's combat gets much better when you have more ammo and guns.

All of the boss fights are really fun and creative, nothing nobody hasn't seen before BUT all of it fits the theme and world. Though again the negative control/physics aspect of the game will make these fights more frustrating than they would of been otherwise.

If A&D was movement and S&W was wheelies, the combat/movement control relationship would of been better i think.

--------------------------
Looting, Crafting & Cooking
--------------------------
Really fun finding new parts, materials and stuff. This is how you upgrade and unlock new weapons but you can also upgrade your bags ( so when you die, you lose a smaller percentage ). Picking up those bags returns the percentage you lost. Dying more times than you have bags causes you to lose that many, i believe.

Cooking is really nice as it gives you timed buffs that last in mins usually like 10-15 real time mins. A LOT of cool buffs to work with and try to craft. Various places to find and buy ingredients to cook stuff with. Its a super immersive aspect of the game but its not some thing you have to do, its just a nice bonus.

---------Conclusion---------

If you love the post-apocalyptic genre ( dark, gritty story ), slow-mo gun slinging and retro 2d/physics games i HIGHLY recommend this, the soundtrack alone is amazing. Also the game features anthro characters, so that's a plus if you are into that. Its cartoony appearance betrays its oppressive and sad atmosphere, like everyone is at their life's edge.

While not on my top ten list its not far from it.

I'm biased towards anything in this style as well as it being so cute and with that out of the way, i want to gush about this game and every thing good about it and the things that i don't like. I will start with the negative aspects first.

---------((Negative))----------

--------
Game Difficulty
--------
You have an game play loop that is kind of easy and does not punish players very hard at all. You can constantly respawn and as long as one person remains alive, you retain all damage progress in a raid boss. The game is significantly more difficult in single player but still resides in a weird middle ground.

Enemies you kill don't come back but the remaining enemies fully heal if you lose. If you are a bad or lazy player ( nothing wrong with that ) the game can quickly become a war of attrition and you can brute force your way through it with little to no strategy or forethought, though it will take a lot longer if you do that.

* Generally a fast pace game like spiral knights or other team up beat down games.

--------
Class Restrictions
--------
While you have a lot of variety and weapon overlap, i still hate that system in RPGs. More options and more creativity is all ways better i think. Mixed builds will general be weaker than most specialized builds in these kinds of games, so i don't see the big deal with mix matching ( you can a little ).

Also i'm decent at math, if you do the math when making a game its gonna be balanced (chess for example). Unfortunately not a lot of game designers do any and it turns into a "what feels right" or a number pattern kind of system. With that said it feels very thought out and fair even in single player.

--------
Quests
--------
Game revolves around atypical MMO quest and progression design but feels more like a homage to it. With that said the quests are rather brain dead and thus far in ( Lv20 ) you can totally skip text and just rush through quests if you wanted. The combat however is very addictive and action based, unlike many many other MMOs.

I think the lackluster quest design was intended but its combat, environments, enemies, customization and looting allows me to give it a pass on that. I'm also one of the view weirdos that actually read the text on quests in MMOs.

A permanent choice dialogue system would of forced players to read the text and is much more engaging. It doesn't even need game play mechanics, just personality an illusion that it feels like your speaking to a character and not a info booth.

--------((Positives))---------

------------
Exploration
------------
OMG its like an amazing PS1 old school adventure game. Its beautiful and the characters are soooo cute. Its not open world and is very instanced based like a spyro game. Again i only got as far as Lv20, so the maps are on the smaller side.

I count this as a positive, everything feels like it is intricately hand crafted. The sound design is superb, you can hear the sounds of clothing jingles and the broom of the shop keep sally ( an adorable giant possum lady ).

--------------------------
Character Customization
--------------------------
You have a good handful of species to choose from and its really fun making characters. It does not discriminate against heavier body types that's for sure. Though i wished it had more options for skinny characters, the creator as it is allows you to make some pretty cool characters with different hair, tail and pattern options.

As for the body types you can scale and adjust them making them thinner ( average? ) or thicc. Lot's of color options and just an over all and really fun experience to make characters in this game. With all that said i'm all for customization which includes removing the height restrictions on species and add more options.

"Easily one of the best out there, its unique and doesn't have humans." From my Biomutant review lol.

--------------------------
Combat Game Play
--------------------------
Its an amazing fast pace beat down with a really nice combination of melee and range combat ( if you want too ). You have the option to go full melee and just continue the up close beat downs on cute monsters. You have a skill bar to active additional abilities besides your base attack chain and again all of these have to actually hit enemies.

* The game does have lock on and plays similar to dark souls in that manner just waaay faster.

The blocking and parry mechanics are really fun too, you block too much your guard will break so that's a neat little stamina management system ( separate from skill mana ). Warriors use effectively adrenaline instead of mana but you can mix and match them with some generic skills too.

As you level up and beat mobs, bosses and raid bosses you unlock more attacks. Its a very fast paced game as you can dash and dodge around enemies using jump attacks, combine this with crowd control abilities, healing and the other classes and you have a very well rounded fun and engaging combat system.

Single player doesn't suffer from not having additional players and is a more difficult experience and a good one. You won't have access to all the abilities a whole party has but a single player in this game has a lot of versatility on their own.

--------------------------
Looting/Rewards
--------------------------
The loot is amazing, you can find cosmetics and turn regular gear into cosmetics. So its a very stylish and rewarding and loot has some variance to it as well. You can get rares with different stat bonuses and is just an over all very fun experience opening treasure chests to see what awesome loot you get next.

* Raid Boss chests are the best, they're HUGE!

The only downside i can think of is loot is very random and you might not get what you need for your class. You will most likely have to re-run dungeons or trade for the gear you are looking for. Again this is another reason i don't like class restrictions but i all ready outlined that.

With all that said, the loot in this game is very very satisfying.

---------Conclusion---------

If you love cute and cheesy, a mega fun beat down and retro 3d graphics i HIGHLY recommend this, especially for people who love RPGs/MMOs. This would also be an great game to play with friends or even randos.

This easily goes on my top ten list.

*Also apologize for writing/typos i was eating dinner and playing the game at the same time.

TL;DR - You can't have situations where you can out think with sub optimal stuff, you HAVE to strive for being OP as possible to even have a chance to win ( it feels like a bad tournament with cold opponents ).

Yea this game sucks, it offers the illusion of strategy. If you do not get the BEST STUFF you just automatically lose to some bosses and encounters. A lot effects all ways happen like bleed and there is no way to get rid of it, the debuffs are extremely powerful and annoying. There is no counter play or gotcha, everything is flat and requires you to over power.

Its all about being unstoppable more than it is having a cohesive strategy. I don't even know why the game lets you play if a character dies. You gain so many downsides to reviving you might as well start over. Dying in boss fights causes you to lose half you hand and can completely end your run if you are caught in between an attack and no way to stop it.

This game is not a strategy game its an gathering game.

I feel as if my time and money was wasted, which is a shame because the game looks really nice. If i wanted to get bullied by cheesy mechanics, id make a new MTG Arena account without my extensive library of cards. The only time you lose in this game is either you ran out of resources ( HP ) or you didn't have enough power or defense, regardless of strategy.

I am supremely disappoined.

//Relevant Update\\
Id rather pay 12.50 for a REUSABLE guest seat (for a pack of 4) instead of 25 dollars a copy per player. Id also rather spend a total of what 75 dollars plus tax and not have to deal with other annoying forms of micro-transactions, i hate pop ups.

Considering the default price of the game and how much additional free content that is given, the guest seats is a good way to support further development into the tool. This doesn't include all the modding that can be done with it.

The seats is a fair way to support both the developers and the GMs/Players alike.

//Pros of the Tool\\
1.) It let's you build an entire campaign/world and allows the players to interact like its a video game. Extremely immersive and a lot of settings like fog, music etc. Couple all of that with modding and you can build all most anything.

2.) Extremely easy to use and build levels. Can copy and paste entire buildings or sections and even save them to a txt file for latter. So if you needed a building from one level ( board ) to another, you can just copy the txt and paste it in. This is extremely helpful for populating empty buildings by creating your own prefabs on a separate board.

3.) Extremely fast loads no lag but you gotta take into account network though.

//Cons of the Tool\\
1.) Its gonna be a bit blocky because its a tile based system but good level builders can mitigate that extremely and the tiles are very detailed and the texture quality is also good as well. The block tile style isn't much of an issue unless you desire some thing with a more natural look without seams. I think the tile system is more authentic to TTRPG experience.

2.) U.I is a little clunky when setting up a campaign and switching back and fourth between build mode, DM and player.

3.) It really needs a notebook function like tabletop simulator and some sort of custom rules page where you can add your own rule book for everyone to look at. Despite missing this feature there are mods that address this problem.

TL;DR - it's a japanese card game (like poker) 10/10 would yakuman again.

-------------
(Game Play)
-------------
Its basically a form of poker (basically a game of hands, with different values) where the flow of the game is you draw a card and discard a card each turn and can make calls instead of drawing to get specific tiles depending on who you call it from. You do that to build a winning hand either a big one or a fast one to try and win the game with a lot of points or to stop other players from doing the same.

[Control] - Works great and runs good, nice prompts for special actions.
[Info] - Has the information to understand the game inside and out.
[Options] - You can set various rules to mix-up game play.

-----------
(Graphics)
-----------

* Good U.I and has chunky buttons like the tiles themselves.
* Graphics are passable but it has some decent effects.

--------
(Sound)
--------

* Nice theme music and gameplay music (can be turned off and adjusted)
* The sounds of the calls and noises tiles make are wonderful, sounds like real mahjong.
* Surprisingly has anime sounding voice acting for the various calls and claiming a win.

-------------
(Conclusion)
-------------
Highly recommend this if you don't have friends to play with AND even higher if you do have friends to play with online that like this kind of stuff.

I like Mahjong so i'm biased but i think this is a good way to experience another culture and its a really interesting game just from its looks. There's a lot of strategy, more so than say poker or texas holdem but there is a lot of overlap and luck plays a big factor as well but not in every round.

I'm biased towards anything cute and cheesy so with that out of the way, i just wanna fairly point out its problems. I think its a good game but it could of been legendary. Keep in mind my play through was done on hard mode.

---------((Negative))----------

--------
Combat
--------
It is still decent as is but its very easily exploited (stun lock, AOE, ranged combat, Wu Fu). These abilities are easy to spam and make combat irrelevant. The system doesn't reward you for using all these fancy combos and special powers. I beat the game using just pistols and two combos to chain Wu Fu. I actually don't have a problem with the parry system because it punishes you if you attack too much after a parry (also it doesn't give invulnerability).

I also think Infinite ammo was a bad design choice. I actually played and beat the game using ammo mods as ammo and not using normal bullets.

--------------------
Enemy Animations
--------------------
Plenty of enemy types but they just reuse the same animations from similar sized/looking creatures. So you effectively only have a handful of enemy types because of that. I could bare it because combined with the bosses and exploration, it was just enough to deal with that repetition.

Should of made 1 or 2 unique animations per each variation of enemy types (i'm an animator/graphics designer). Creating new animations from finished rigs is much easier than from scratch, so they have every thing they need to do that.

--------
Quests
--------
Repetitive quests and very simplistic, just go to the marker do the thing and your done. I was able to bare it because of the dialogue and cheesy nature of the game.

They should of had more interactive quests tied into the dialogue system.

---------------
Quality of Life
---------------
Besides doing main quests and side quests (all of which are repetitive, in some manner) there isn't any extra fun stuff to do on the side besides collecting literal scrap (they have cool/funny models "Straberri Katschap") and more loot etc. Of course there is exploration which is just fun as hell but thats beside the point.

They could of done with some mini-games or some thing to flesh the world out more.

------------------------
Melee Crafting Addons
------------------------
While the crafting overall is amazing the addons for melee weapons is pretty awful besides the stat bonuses you get. You have no control of rotation and they are quite literally tacked on.

-----
Bugs
-----
I mean what game doesn't but there are a handful here some annoying others really annoying. Some melee combos are so useless against specific enemies that you can't trigger them against those enemies even though you pressed the correct input. I had to perform an additional input just to trigger them.

Any combo/special that requires two melee attacks in a row will not trigger unless you are stationary or basic jump and land then attack. Any form of movement seems to bug these combos out, dodging obviously activates a different combo.

That was the most import bug there are others like equipment not coming off after clicking a bunch of times (you can still swap equipment) but the rest of the bugs are pretty minor.

--------
The DLC
---------
They all ready have a mixed reception, they shouldn't have released that DLC it was stupid. It was either a cash grab or they wanted a place holder DLC to make it look like they are getting extra work done, maybe both?

They need to focus on the problems the game has, its still fixable (at most a month of work, with a team). Granted i'm patient and wished they had regular content updates and/or give the community mod tools.

--------((Positives))---------

------------
Exploration
------------
Its a big beautiful huge world and you can stumble onto various quests that will help you out latter in the game. Its very rewarding to just explore and its made easy and very enjoyable with the mounts and glider. For me i think it has to do with the hunt for finding random missions on accident, which makes it more appealing (at least for me).

Only thing id change for exploration, is adding in climbing claws.

--------------------------
Character Customization
--------------------------
Easily one of the best out there, its unique and doesn't have humans. You have various genetic dispositions that effect your appearance greatly and you base stats. You also have a choice between some fur patterns and a color wheel. This system combined with the weapon crafting (wished they had armor crafting) makes it a very very enjoyable experience.

I would of added more body types (races?) but other than that its good.

----------
The Story
----------
Its very in your face with environmentalism but they're not wrong either so its a weird spot. Overall the message is positive and you all ways have the option to just be evil anyways if the goody two shoes stuff gets on your nerves. I however enjoyed the cheesy good guy stuff along with the all the characters dialogue.

Only thing id change is adding in more dialogue choices/responses. I come from games like Bioware's Neverwinter Nights so this is pretty tame in comparison HOWEVER, most RPGs aren't what i would call an RPG.

BIOMUTANT is infact an RPG which is rare for those that use that label. Its just a basic RPG but that's saying a lot.

------------------
Weapon Crafting
------------------
I made a space marine 40k bolter and a dope vudoo katana, i mean enough said.

If it was up to me, i would of added more parts (it all ready has tons) and the ability to tweak anchor points.

---------Conclusion---------

I like this game its a good game not what i was expecting but i still love it. For me it was soooo close to being a legendary 10/10 game had they put more effort into the quest design, puzzles and overall experience.

If cute and cheesy doesn't bother you and you like open world games. I highly recommend this, especially for people who love RPGs, your decisions matter in this game (i know cause i screwed up a result i wanted).

TL;DR = This is not a bad game by any means, it depends on the person. Unless you believe in objective truths, (which i don't) i find this game to be lacking and boring (just like any other mmo, grinding).

This game feels exactly like any other mmo, same basic concepts. The only thing that makes it stand out is the ability to mix and match armors for different ability combos but ultimately nothing special or different from other mmos. This game has the same traditional boxed in progression and game play systems as other mmos (playing within your level/tiers).

It uses the standard flat line progression of most other mmos, where the difficulty is designed to be fully manageable and you can only fight and do things within in your tier (level, rank etc). These kinds of games prevent and are designed to actively stop you from playing creatively and has limited roles for you to take. This makes the game extremely repetitive and you will be continuously using the same strategies for combat and doing the same crafting actions throughout all levels, the only difference is the stats and animations.

It's effectively the same thing across all levels/tiers, there are some minor exceptions for PVP but ultimately these kinds of games are highly solve-able and leave little to be explored or experimented with (like most competitive games). The amount of effective strategies become narrower over time, due to competition. This is due to the game having little to offer in the amount of what you can do with skills on top of most of them being variations of the same thing.

The game might as well just use skill ranks and dice rolls like D&D, it just seems like a waste of time to disguise it as some thing it's not.

The multi-classing helps with the problem of limited roles but due to the simplicity of most mmos (and this game), the problem stems from the design of mmos in general. All classes and roles are boxed into tiers and levels and this makes the content outside of those tiers and levels in inaccessible and puts the game play into a stale box, with the illusion of progress. The game play from the beginning is no different than that at the end of the game, because of the boxing method this game and other mmos use when they design their games.

It's not a bad game, it's just the same thing i've seen before.

tl;dr - Amazing, this should of existed a long time ago.

( 1.Multiplayer ) This is the most important part for me and why i bought this game for me and my friends but most importantly it ties into the 2nd point below. It supports up to 8 players in online play.

( 2. Modding ) You can add in a countless amount of custom content and even custom coding/scripting. Custom cards, models, textures (various custom or imported games) are made easy to add to this game. Other content requires specific skills to add, such as animations and scripting/coding.

( 3.RPGs & Card Games ) Allows me and my friends to do things that would be otherwise impossible due to traveling.

I am a long time fan AND CRITIC of dead frontier 1 and the other games made by Creaky Corpse.

This game for me is better than the 1st game because it actually works in coop. It has better performance, it looks better and just generally is more fun due to the changes in the leveling system. I remember in DF1 i basically had to run away all the time and it was basically a stealth game until you had the stats/resources to actually fight bosses or hordes of stronger enemies.

This game fixes (or changes, however you wanna look at it) the play styles available to players. In DF1 you was mostly stuck to stealth and melee, unless you wanted to blow through all of your resources. In DF2 you can actually reliably use guns in any area, even the lower level stuff can be viable in the higher level areas.

So you can choose to be an efficient stealther, that maximizes profit.

or

You can go out like a berzerker and destroy everything in melee (not sure about bosses tho)

or

Get ammo and go guns blazing on everything, like i do. For me getting ammo isn't hard cause i keep ammo i loot and sell ammo i don't need and then buy the ammo i want. Granted i use the cheaper ammos.

but

Even the expensive ammo isn't that bad. I managed to loot the assault rifle ammo and filled up my entire car with it and gave it to my friend because that's the ammo he uses.

So unlike DF1, in DF2 you have more player agency and PVP is also 100x better here because this game is better optimized.

I find it insane it has so many negative reviews, when it's still early access and came out not too long ago. Granted the DEVs for DF1/DF2 are slow as ♥♥♥♥ BUT they do eventually get the job done. I remember being excited about DF1 (used to be a 2D game) going 3d and it completely disappointed me due to it's really bad performance issues, it was basically single player for me at that point.

Dead Frontier 2, is the Dead Frontier i been waiting for, since childhood.

And yes i know P2W is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BUT this uses the same micro transactions model as warframe. In warframe you can buy items that are ready to use, mods and all sorts of stuff. You all ways have the option not to buy and earn those items in game.

Dead Frontier 1 and 2 are the same way in that regard. The only difference is the PVP is separately balanced in warframe than it is in DF1 and DF2 BUT generally you still have an advantage in PVP if you buy stuff with real money in either game.

The Lex for example does more damage than Lato or even Aklato in PVP.

All thought it is pretty funny and maybe ironic that you die so fast in PVP in both of these games, that the minor stat differences don't matter too much (depends on the skill levels of the players). Only a skilled person will be able to take advantage of minor stat differences.

Though i still agree P2W is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and shouldn't be in either game. Advantages should be given out freely or earned equally.
