Dragon Ball Fighterz is out and now I'm reminded of how mediocre I am at fighting games!

The world is in danger! Clones of the greatest warriors run wild across the planet and even a few of the universe's most dangerous threats have been resurrected. But even though Goku and friends are weakened by strange “Waves” they suddenly have a trick up their sleeve. You!
You are a spirit that can inhabit one of their bodies and bring them back to fighting strength. So now I can finally live out my dream of being inside Goku.

Dragon Ball Fighterz is a 2.5D fighting game developed by Arc System Works, known mostly for Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Unlike a majority of modern Dragon Ball games which were more like fun brawlers and Dragon Ball fanfic machines, DBF is a very competent fighting game with a weighty roster and a few neat modes to keep you busy.

Play as your favorite characters such as Fightman, Manlet, Big Green, Kid Fightman, Triclops, Real Estate Agent, Chromosome Snatcher, Forehead #18, and who could forget: Fightman but shorter.

Once you start the game you are introduced to a lobby where you choose your avatar before you head out. From here you can pick modes ranging from story to arcade to ranked and casual matches to arena mode, which is basically the ultimate turf fight. Its nice to have a fighting game with all of its options actually fleshed out and ready to play from launch, unlike a few certain other games that came out with missing features.
Its like ordering a pizza and only getting the coke.
The story mode is surprisingly weighty, being a mix of fighting game and visual novel. Though that's par for the course with Arc Systems, they even went out of their way to make a brand new story instead of just treading old ground. Even going as far as to add a new character who I may or may not have a little boy crush on.
Its refreshing to see your favorite characters on a new adventure instead of just treading old ground over and over again.
Xenoverse could learn a lot from this.

Something that Arc Systems really did well on is the sense of scale. These are some powerful dudes and ladies, even the weakest one is probably strong enough to blow up a planet at this point. So you get special animations for beating an opponent with certain moves, like giant beam attacks treat you to a zoom out to show just how big these attacks are, some of them even leave the planet. There are also finishers that launch your opponent through a mountain. Or into space.
He's not coming back.

Most of the characters share the same button commands, which makes it easier to memorize specials and combo enders. But at the same time its kind of lame that there isn't a character for certain play styles, so charge character players are basically a left out.

The game also has an auto-combo feature for easing new players into the genre. Don't rely too much on it though or you're going to get bodied.
I mean, you're going to get bodied anyway, so you know what I mean. I get bodied.
I also cry often.

It all melds together and helps the player adjust to playing a team of three characters. Since there isn't much difference in commands, you end up learning your characters quickly, a hopefully improving as you climb the ranks. Or just stop playing after getting beaten up by a man with the Steam name of Pedro Mustachio, I don't care.
There are a few problems, at least on launch. Finding a game, ranked or otherwise takes so long I may as well review this game while I wait for a match. I also can't seem to play with friends, or some friends at least. For some reason we're given a “This game is full message” when we try to play in a room together, even if its just the two of us.
Other than that and a few frame hiccups, the game is absolutely solid.

Dragon Ball Fighterz is a ragingblast to play. It captures the fury, the scale, and the adrenaline of the series in a way we haven't seen since the Budokai Tenkaichi games. It doesn't hold back, it plays Dragon Ball straight and doesn't dilute it at all. If the more toned down games decided to let loose like DBF does then we'd probably have some kind of crazy Dragon Ball game renaissance on our hands.

DBF is in love with it's source material, and that's not something you can say for very many games. If you're looking for a new fighting game, a new Dragon Ball game, or just a new Dragon Ball story. At least give this a check out.

Pros:
Handles much better than the first game
Soundtrack is beautiful
Still rather challenging
Starting stats are more diversed
No ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from windows live or microsoft
60 fps of beauty
much bigger inventory and available hold slots
you can now teleport from any bonfire to another

Cons:
A couple bosses are recycled
The shading isn't as intense
The dungeons are much more linear and it's hard to get lost. (this can be viewed as a pro as well)
fall damage is much higher and far more restricting
soul memory makes it a ♥♥♥♥♥ to find other players that you want to find
The characters and lore isn't quite as good as the first dark souls

Final verdict:
10/10, an absolute must own. If you enjoy challenge or the soul series, this is the game for you. If you want to simply play it because others are, you have every right to believe that you should buy it. This game is not for the weak willed. If you are one to give up and quit easily, this isn't going to be good for you, and just put you in a hissy fit for wasting money on this game that well deserves full price purchased.

If we give up, we will go hollow. So no matter the struggle you find in this game. Give yourself the power to fight again. Learn from your defeat and fight until you succeed. Never give up.
