Easily the best EDF so far. For people not familiar with the series, EDF is a very arcadey shooter with a mission-based structure that has a lot of fun with old Sci-fi B Movie tropes and turning just about every dial to 11 over the course of the game. For example, you will start the game with a relatively normal grenade launcher, and you will end the game with a grenade launcher that can level an entire city block, and you will need it!

A fantastic game, but one that might ask you to put in some work. I'm a person who plays a lot of SRPGs but only rarely loves doing so. I got Tactics Ogre on a whim, got hooked pretty quickly on the story, but had some troubles with the actual gameplay. After a lot of outside reading and reflection on my unit composition the game fully clicked and I binged it all the way to the end of the game.

A couple of highlights for me.

  • This is one of the few, if not literally the only, SRPG that I've played that I feel really accomplishes both its Strategy and RPG goals. Unit customization and party composition are deep enough for the RPG side to present a lot of choice, and the game does a great job of putting value on different things over the course of the story. For example, Archers are very valuable in the early game, but become more difficult to use when enemies in heavy armor start showing up. You can still use Archers, but you'll need to consider how you solve the heavy armor problem, which you can do in many different ways. This RPG side, a.k.a. the number side, never overtakes the Strategy side, which I find to be rare among SPRGs. The game has a slowly increasing level cap, and XP itself is very easy to get, so grinding is never a thing. While the RPG side means levels give you new abilities and tricks to try, this level cap means you are never overpowered or underpowered for a fight. You win fights with your strategy, not your numbers, at the end of the day.
  • Chariot Tarot, a.k.a. the ability to rewind turns and actions freely. As someone who often misclicks, this is very nice. It is also very nice, especially when learning the game, to be able to completely screw something up and return to a "save" point without completely restarting a battle. The game will eventually start rewarding you for not using it, but it never punishes you, and I appreciate that Tactics Ogre thinks I'm a big enough boy to decide how strict I want to be with myself.
  • It blows my mind that the game's story was originally written for a SNES game from 1995. It's a political tale thematically focused on how cycles of violence bind people. The story is full of choices for the player that have real meaning behind them.

Overall, I highly recommend Reborn. I came into it hearing "this is the best strategy RPG of all time" and I came out believing it. This does not make it a perfect game, and it does ask the player to meet it halfway at points. It was very rewarding for me to do so, but it's certainly no flaw or demerit as a player to not want to.

A semi-Left 4 Dead with light RPG elements set in the 40k universe. Its standout feature is its generally excellent game feel. If you're looking for deep progression systems/treadmills with a lot of hooks, this is not your game. If you're looking for a co-op shooter with a solid core gameplay loop it is likely worth your time.

The game is currently a little content light in terms of missions. I have found there to be enough novelty among the current four classes and their unique weapons to keep myself entertained for 80+ hours regardless, but it is a fair criticism to be aware of.

Edit as of November 2024: The game is finally in a good enough place that I can recommend it without reservations. Content, both in terms of maps (both new missions and new, increased difficulty options) and builds (character/weapon customization) have gotten to the point where the game is both just a genuine joy to play while being deep enough that you can try new things for a long time. Most importantly, thanks to the recent crafting rework, there is no longer a real random/artificial barrier to customization, making trying new things a breeze.
