Easily one of the most emotional and impactful RPGs I’ve ever played. Puts you in the protagonists’ shoes more than you might expect, so… things will hit. Pretty hard.

This is the best 3D Sonic game ever made. Full stop.

Despite being an expansion for a remaster of a 13 year old game, Shadow Generations has completely redefined and *raised* my expectations for this franchise going forward; every single part of this game is designed with thought, care, love, and above all else, a need to be the coolest damn hedgehog around.

The movement is a revised and highly-tuned implementation of Frontiers- Shadow moves extremely tightly and responsively, but never so much as to feel jerky. Every single movement feels like it has weight behind it; and as such your speed feels so much more impactful. However, a wonderful movement system can only take a game so far. That’s why I’m very glad to say that the level design is also some of the most refined and thoughtful stuff sonic team has put out in YEARS. I have not seen stage design this good since Unleashed, and am over the moon with how well it’s handled.

One of the big selling points is Shadow’s new Doom powers, based on the fact of his alien heritage: While I had assumed these would be one off uses for specific segments of stages, I was absolutely pleasantly shocked to find that they are integrated EXTREMELY smoothly into gameplay. You are constantly rewarded for using Shadow’s latent abilities to gain an upper hand in levels, either with shortcuts or collectibles. There is nothing more satisfying than hitting a hugely time saving shortcut with smart usage of these.

The story…. I won’t spoil. All I’ll say is Ian Flynn has done it again. :)

Now, this is a bundle, so it comes along with Sonic Generations as well. How good is the remastered version? It’s good!! Slightly better textures, some more collectibles, configurable controls, fixed jank from the old version, a pretty nice set of upgrades from the old PC version!! They even added the drop dash as a skill for Classic Sonic. Just as good if not a little better than the original, save some very minor frame pacing issues that I’m sure will get ironed out with time. A very welcome change compared to the disaster that was Colors Ultimate.

So, final verdict? THIS IS WORTH YOUR MONEY. It’s a combination of a remaster of a beloved game of yesteryear AND the best title Sonic team has made in years. Over a decade by this point. This is pretty much the new perfect starting title for anyone looking into getting into Sonic, and a gift for longtime fans.

If Frontiers was a step in the right direction, Shadow Gens is a hop, skip, jump and LEAP in that same direction. I can’t wait to see where Sonic and Shadow go next.

Getting the tetris effect from this game will make your world feel a bit flatter than usual.

A wonderfully mind-bending golf game that really only uses math to accomplish its magic! Worth the price.

A wise man once said, "I want to be able to play Tetris while feeling like I'm being thrust through the essence of earth itself."

I uh, don't think a wise man said that, on second thought, but this game delivers that nonetheless.

After playing the demo for a little bit, couple of things:

This game is BEAUTIFUL. INCREDIBLY SO. Looks like the most stylized ps2 game you could ever think of and then adds some more soul on top of that.

The moveset has a ton of work put into it and you can tell from the way it responds to everything else in your environment;

Wonderful music!!

One problem.

The platforming itself feels *finicky*. And worse, *inconsistent*. I found myself trying to make the same jump ten minutes straight because it *felt* possible but despite a mostly similar approach each time I tried, I got wildly different distances from each attempt at the jump. This is a pretty big problem given that it's the game's main focus.

So yeah, a recommendation cause this much quality is free, BUT, be prepared to be frustrated with the level design and platforming physics. Often.
