AC Mirage is too focused on avoiding the mistakes that recent AC games have made in the spirit of "returning" to its roots to actually capture anything that made the older games (that Mirage is ostensibly a homage to) good or exciting. The result is something remarkably unremarkable.

There is simply too much effort and creativity put into this for me to give this a negative review, but I'd be lying if I said I had an overall positive experience. Steam doesn't have the option for a neutral review so I guess a positive will have to do for now.
It does not hold a candle to the base game. The new characters are cool but level design here is just not it. The regions are about 1.5x the size of any of the base game ones, in a couple cases nearly double, which is frankly inexcusable, not to mention the fact that the regions themselves are torturous to navigate through on a first play through. The base game had issues with player direction but somehow that problem is not only more common here but it's worse, particularly in the Artificer and 2nd half of Spearmaster campaigns. In Survivor, whenever the game turns you lose it's always well thought out and with a purpose. Whenever you get stuck at a part you always have the tools to make progress, you may just not realize it. Often times in MSC it's just BS and lazy game design.
The visuals and music are just as good as the base game if not better but the game design is such a steep step down from the base campaigns that it's hard not to acknowledge the flaws. That said it's such a unique experience compared to the base game and it presents so many interesting ideas that it still manages to be tolerable. The expansions to the lore are also a welcome addition.

Gourmand is pretty funny. I like him. Also, Saint has the best campaign, Spearmaster is the worst, if only for that horrible 2nd half.

Indie metroidvanias are a highly over-saturated market. If you are to play one of them let it be this one
