Before getting into my thoughts, I would like to preface this review by saying that I have 2,807 hours in this game and have purchased every DLC (with exception of the eBooks) at time of writing.

I'm going to break down each feature of this Immersion Pack, and will give a general impression and other thoughts afterwards

  • New British Missions Not much to say on these. The new mission system is much more linear than before but also much more clear and intuitive than the old system. Rule Brittania adds some extra missions for all the nations on the British isles.

  • Innovativeness Where to start on this one? Innovativeness is a rather counter-intuitive mechanic that comes to do very little in the grand scheme of things. Basically how it functions is the first people to advance a technology or idea gets some innovativeness, about 1-2 points of it. This innovativeness also grows at a very slow rate if you are ahead of time in tech, and decreases much faster if you have the "Neighbors Ahead in Technology" discount for your technology. What you receive in return is (at max innovativeness of 100) -10% power costs, -1% army tradition decay and -1% naval tradition decay. So really how this works is you spend extra monarch points in order to get a meagar bonus that may nullify some of the monarch points you've spent. Spending extra points in order to save a couple points is oxymoronic and not a mechanic that really influences or rewards any particular way of play.

  • Industrialization Industrialization is a very late-game provincial bonus. Basically how it works is there are a few provinces that have coal as a latent resource. They appear on your province but you cannot make use of it until some criteria are met: the Enlightenment Institution must have spawned (1700), 20 innovativeness, and 20 development. What does it give you? A trade good worth 10 ducats, goods produced, and the ability to build a manufactory for the province that increases your national goods produced by 5%. Sounds good, right? That's a lot of money! The problem is that in order to get this, it has to essentially be the end of the game, and you need to spend those extra monarch points to get your innovativeness up. In addition, the reward here is more money, the issue being that by 1700 you are generally already drenched in ducats and don't really need anything additional. It's a nice little bonus but it is ultimately unnecessary and once again: does not really influence your strategies or add any additional gameplay.

  • Naval Doctrine Another fire and forget feature, Naval Doctrines are five buttons you can press to give yourself a modifier for your navy. In order to activate them, you must have a Naval force limit of at least 20, and must spend 0.1 ducats for every sailor's worth of ships you have at the time. The five options are: -15% fleet maintenance (not too bad), +15% galley combat ability (nice for Japan, China, and the Mediterranean nations), +33% ship trade power (nice for trading better as a nation with a small navy), +33% ship capture (it's ok, it's a chance to get ships in fights you win), and Britain gets the Wooden Wall, which gives +1 combat roll in ship fights off owned coasts (this one is useless. As Britain your navy is already very powerful and this doctrine isn't necessary at all). So overall this mechanic is... alright. There are some nice bonuses but the only input it needs from a player is a single button click and a bit of money. Not much that will add or subtract from how you play the game.

  • Trade Steering This is a peace deal. It requires 60% war score to enable, and what it does is force another nation to use their merchants to steer trade for you. Would be a great way to get some extra money in trade while hurting your rivals, and is a great addition for merchant republics who will generally not expand too much. However, it doesn't have much use for anyone else, as it costs 60% warscore. That is a lot of fighting for a temporary bonus that could have given land instead.

  • Anglicanism A unique religion for Britain. Its base bonuses are -10% development cost and +50% innovativeness. Makes using the innovative card a bit more feasible for Britain. In addition, you can spend church power to gain a queen-consort, divorce that consort, get a boost of money, get a mercantilism, or gain a stability. Not a very competitive religion in comparison to, say, Protestant or Catholic, but it is a fun little addition with some neat Role-play usage, which I can personally appreciate. However, only Britain really gets to use this and it will cause you to gain a relationship penalty with all other Christian nations since you will be the only one of that faith.

  • Knowledge Sharing Good for multiplayer. It allows a nation to stimulate institution growth in another country in exhange for some of their income. This leads to being able to help each other in multiplayer very well, and the AI actually does utilize this mechanic. Probably the strongest addition to the game from the pack. However I see no real reason to ever actually utilize this on AI.

  • Unit Pack To the units. Some of you may know that I have a certain appreciation for units as I have created unit mods in the past for this game. The unit models in this pack are beautiful and very high quality; Carlberg and the other artists deserve a good deal of praise for their work here. But that's really where the good times end. The problem with the units isn't their quality; it's the nations that they are used for. In this pack are 48 very nice looking unit models. 20 of these units are for nations that start annexed by England, 4 for the Irish nation which you will never see unless you form the nation, with the remainder being used for nations that are often annexed right at the beginning of the game (Scotland, Brittany, and the Irish minors). So in a typical game, you will generally only see 8 of the 48 (16.6%) unit models in this pack

  • Music You get three songs. They sound nice but there is a distinct lack of Rule Brittania or British Grenadiers or some form of them. Not much else to say on this.

Final Notes
Britain was honestly a very bad choice as an expansion. It was already a very well developed area that did not need attention for the sake of improving the game, or at the very least not to the same extent that other locations need attention, such as Iberia, Italy, the HRE, India, SE Asia, or the Balkans. PDX simply chose it because it is a popular area and they seemed to be trying to cash in on that idea, only to find that they couldn't come up with anything substantial since the area was already well covered.

Final Verdict
It's a very small expansion that, while cheap, honestly doesn't deliver much. Nothing really game changing, nothing that will change the way you play or think through strategies. It's a mediocre DLC at best that has nothing really to offer and unless you play in the British isles you will hardly even notice it is or isn't there.
Honestly I would recommend skipping it and showing Paradox that this kind of expansion isn't wanted or desired. It's very shallow expansion and Paradox is more than capable of delivering better. They need to know that at this point we expect better from them and don't care for these cheap and shallow additions that really add nothing new to the game.

Thank you for taking the time in reading this review and I hope you have a pleasant day.

Very addicting and fun to boot, whether you want to try and rebuild past empires like Rome or the Mongols, build new empires with Ulm, or "do it better" than historical empires like Spain or Great Britain, all can be accomplished with this deep and rewarding game.

Multiplayer is fun, and you can play competitively or co operatively (or both!) with quite a few people at once (my highest amount being 38 players in one game). In addition, anyone playing multiplayer gets to use all of the DLC of the host, so you can try out features without purchasing the DLC yourself.

A common criticism is the excessive amounts of DLC. Though there is a lot, not all of it is necessary and the majority of it is cosmetic. The Paradox Forums is a good place to find out what the best DLCs to get are, but the game is very playable without any of them.

Overall, probably the most fun game and the best dollar to time ratio game I've ever played

yeah I just bought it. I was playing, and I realised
It's basically the digital version of a dollhouse
and then shortly after I realised... I had just used 9 hours of my life
It's like a gluttonous black void that swallows your soul.

10/10 would play again.

Parkour controls very poorly, often getting stuck on walls I didn't want to climb, downright idiotic AI, and shoves DRM and multimedia down your throat the whole time.
Game is buggy as hell, frame rate drops consistently, and the amount of pop-ins and poor quality models on anything further than ten feet away is disgraceful.

By god they fixed the microtransactions on that first patch though! Avoid it. Last Ubisoft title I will be buying.

By far one of the most fun, frustrating, and rewarding games I have ever played. The combat system is immaculate and the tone is dark and forboding. Would recommend to any players looking for an immersive and challenging experience, and are willing to get their ass handed to them multiple times.
