This is a really well made game, and it's free! The horror starts so subtly at first that you almost don't notice it. This led to lots of uneasiness where you can't really pinpoint the cause. This "offness" you feel crescendos to actual horror by the end with a couple genuinely good scares. Overall, great game and it's free so there's no reason not to give it a chance!

I wrote a really (really) long-winded review explaining why I thought this game was great. Then my Wi-Fi cut out, Steam refreshed, and I lost all of it. So, to summarize everything in a brief paragraph: this game is superb. The reason it resonated so deeply with me is because of how it made me feel.

The game is somewhat similar to Undertale (they’re both RPGMaker titles, so that tracks). It excels at putting you in the protagonist's shoes, using every element—story, gameplay, combat, art, and music—to immerse you in Siffrin’s (pookie) experience. Once you’re fully invested, the game ties you to the tracks and runs you over with an emotional freight train—repeatedly. You’ll feel everything Siffrin does: happiness, sadness, frustration, confusion, depression, anger, and utter hopelessness.

I got the big sad (also known as crippling depression!!), and this game hit me hard. It mirrored my own feelings lately—like life is an endless loop of the same day, repeating endlessly with slight differences. If I were in Siffrin’s place, I know I’d want to end it. But the cruelest part? He can’t—not permanently (kinda the point of suicide), anyway. If he dies, he resets to the start of the loop, completely stuck, with no escape in sight. Probably my worst nightmare made real.

Overall, I loved this game. It grabbed me and made me feel things.

but yea
real good
you should buy!!

This game took me around 20-50 hours to beat for the first time (I honestly have no clue of the exact amount, but it’s somewhere in that range). I bought it in 2020, tried it for a while, got to Orange Hell, fell, and then put it down. I picked it up again maybe a couple of months later, reset my save, did the exact same thing, and then put it down again. After repeating this cycle several more times, maybe about a year after getting the game, I finally made it to the snowy area—and that became my new stuck point.

I continued this cycle for a couple of years, picking it up, resetting my old save, playing for a bit, putting it back down, and repeating this ad nauseam. After a while, I actually got pretty damn good at the game, able to reach Orange Hell in about four minutes from the start, but I never committed hard enough to actually beat it.

In April 2024, more than four years after I’d originally purchased the game, I realized how good I had gotten from the frankly ridiculous amount of hours and resets I’d put into it, and I decided I would finally beat it. After four years of playing without finishing, I reset it one more time, this time determined to finish—and I did, in about an afternoon. After countless hours, resets, and more than four years of my life, I beat it, and it was really easy.

About a week passed without me touching it, but then I booted it up again and ran through it in about 30 minutes. Since then, I’ve picked it up on and off, seeing how quickly I could finish. At this point, I think I’ve completed it maybe 30 times, with my fastest run being around 9 and a half minutes. Something that had previously taken me countless hours to do, I had just completed in under 10 minutes.

"Getting Over It" is important to me. Why it’s important, I have no idea. I’m not really sure what I feel when I think about the game, but I know it carries an air of importance for me.

I didn't really like playing visual novel, but this game has expanded my horizons. This game is superb and has made me realize just how great VN's could be. I've gotten a couple of the "Final Endings" and I can tell i have so much left to do. This game is great and don't let the fact its a visual novel hold you back from getting it.

PLAY IT! Try not to search anything up while doing so, it is far more enjoyable to discover Hallownest on your own.
