This is another great iteration of the Civilization series. It has a lot of the concepts you are used to but added some new interesting ones. It seems like the focus of the game was to add more depth to the existing ideas which drove new ideas and features. I like the addition of districts, while it takes up a tile it adds a layer of depth to find the right spot to maximize the benefit of the district with the trade-off of loosing the tile you are building on. Then you can further build up your cities developing the districts without taking up additional tiles. The concept of housing and amenities adds additional depth that impacts your strategy because they are an additional limiting factor to growth/production. I really liked that the harbor can be built giving you access to the oceans without having to build on the coast. The addition of grouping military units is nice, for instance you can match up a balloon to an artillery unit to get additional range (it's NOT the unit stacking of old though). Or match up civilian units with military ones. The idea of Casus Belli is interesting, although I wish there was more done with that like EU 4. The change to Civics was a good improvement adding ability to change the benefits based on what you were trying to accomplish. Especially since it's a tech tree now like Research. The revamping of the builders is great. It adds strategy since they are only good for so many tile improvements before you need to build a new one, which impacts how you do your build sequences. I also liked how captured spies can be used in trading. They made some improvements to Religion to make it more meaningful, but I find it annoying sometimes when it just turns into a back and forth of your civ and another converting cities. Although it can be used as a Casus Belli.

Overall I really like what they have done with this game, and look to spend way more time with it.

This game is a pretty good entry in the hack-and-slash/action RPG genre. The art is well done and has all the fundamentals you would expect. I like the concept of the challenge dungeons that you can go back to and try to accomplish the challenges, which adds replay value. It's nice that you can get to the dungeons from the hub and not have to navigate the entire level again. The game doesn't have the RPG depth that the Van Helsing series has in terms of the variety of configuration you can do. Right now I'm only a few hours in, but the one headache is that if you are in the middle of the level, if you have to quit the game you can't save it at that point. Leaving the level completely resets it. I understand the concept that the developers wanted as part of their design not to have save-reload if the player messed up. It would have been nice if you exit the game you can come back later and be where you quit without having the entire level reset. So it might be difficult if you can't always allocate enough time to clear a level.
