This game cured my depression overnight.

I want nothing more than one more installment where I solve a mystery at my own gay wedding.

Thank you Frog Detective.

I don’t know where to start on this one. Dead By Daylight. A staple under the horror tag for 4, going on 5 years. As someone who played this game nonstop for years, I developed a lot of opinions about it. And believe me, there is a lot to cover.

Gameplay:

There is no gameplay as killer, you run around after survivors and be frustrated at how garbage this game functions. I’ve unfortunately played a lot of killer. It is more fun than it used to be, but every update and release of some stupid ass perk that makes survivors experience even MORE m1 gameplay makes killer so braindead easy, I could teach my dead fundamentalist Christian grandmother to play, and she had a stroke.

The gameplay, as someone who has selected survivor, is to run around the map completing generators so your team can escape. This is it, if you are not the person interacting with the killer, you will be holding m1 all game and doing nothing else. (And the Devs think that’s just fine.) If you do happen to be the unlucky bastard running the killer, then take notes.

Most of the gameplay surrounding running a killer is your ability to knit tight circles around crates and trash that have some of the most abysmal hit boxes I have ever seen in a video game. More often than not your run will be interrupted by your model being caught on an invisible wall and cut your run short. If this doesn’t happen to you, and you actually make it to a pallet or a window then you are also most likely going to be hit despite dropping it anyways.

These windows and pallets are the only line of defense a survivor has against a killer, plus your ability to play mind games with them. Playing a mind game with a killer is a lot like trying to fool a pile of rocks. Most of them will hold W, they will never try to outsmart you, and I will tell you why that doesn’t matter.

Servers:

Those precious windows and pallets are actually worthless, ever since this game switched to dedicated servers, it has only gotten worse. You will lag throughout your chase, you will be hit through windows and walls and pallets by Stretch ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Armstrong the killer.. I lagged less when the servers were peer to peer.

How pathetic is that?

Ranking:

This has been BHVRs white whale for its entire run on steam, they can’t figure out how to make a ranking system work. I will always load into a lobby of all rank 20s, including the killer, or I will load into a lobby of rank 20s and the only rank 1s there are me and the killer.

This leads to horribly unfun, unbalanced matches. New players don’t get to learn from their experience, and the seasoned players weren’t presented with a challenge. Ranks have been busted from day 1 and continue to make this game incredibly frustrating.

Rift:

The only good thing BHVR has ever done that I liked, I’m a writer and I love lore.

This lore is literally some of the laziest, poorest, most uninteresting writing I have ever seen. Whoever they have writing these rifts if being paid to write garbage. They don’t know the characters, they retcon excellent lore for terrible, boring, typical lore.

BHVR is not brave enough to take that step forward to give this game the awesome bite of horror drama that is deserves, and that is just a shame.

Battlepass and Microtransactions

For those that don’t care about the lore in the rift, this is the other half. The Battlepass. I remember when they first hinted this and everyone begged them not to put it in. Unfortunately, BHVR Interactive, at their core, are a mobile game company. Old habits die hard, and most of their money making ways are cash grabbing and desperate.

Every three months, the devs will churn out another half-baked, unbalanced DLC, often a licensed one so they have an excuse to charge $3 extra. New maps and killers used to be released for free in this game.

Now of course a dev has to make their money, and these guys know that they’ve fallen into the honey pot. Cosmetics are a popular way to raise money for your game without making it feel pay2win, and once they figured it out, they started churning these cosmetics out.

Almost all of them cost real money, and a lot of them ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ suck. Most of the cosmetics suck, or don’t make any sense, or are just plain bad. I started to feel like they were running out of ideas, and then they hosted a skin contest, submit a skin and have a chance at it ending up in the game. You didn’t have to be an artist, just someone with an original idea, and I thought that was awesome.

And then I started seeing skins that looked an awful lot like submissions to the contest, except… those people didn’t win the contest. That’s no coincidence.

The Devs-

These devs are led by the most incompetent man I have ever seen on a development project. Cote bumbles, and not in a charming way, he’s very good at saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. He deserves my respect because he always takes it in stride, but he won’t get it because he clearly will never learn.

It feels like none of them play their own game, often releasing grossly imbalanced perks to public builds, ignoring glaring problems. I once watched a dev be looped around an exploit on stream, and the survivor at the end of the game said (in response to being informed they were exploiting.)

“Get off your fat ass and fix it then.”

Oof. And they were my hero, finally somebody said it to their face where they couldn’t just ignore it. The dev left the lobby immediately without acknowledging said exploiter further.

For my final thoughts, it is very frustrating to watch this game crash and burn. I have a deep love for it that I doubt any other game could ever replace. Watching it grow and change has been exciting! Mostly in a bad way, but sometimes in a good way. I desperately want to see this game become better, I want to see the devs care like when it first released.

Until then, don’t buy this game, it will trick you into falling in love with it, and then MCote will ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fart in your mouth and tell you to play Civ6.

Edit: They added Albert Wesker. this game is officially the tits.
