As someone who doesn't typically enjoy most 3D Sonic games (not necessarily because I don't think the concept can work, I just think that most 3D Sonics aren't designed well), I think I can comfortably say that Sonic Frontiers is the best of the whole lot and a fantastic game. Running around in a 3D environment with fun things to do is what Sonic should have been doing in the first place. Controls are great, difficulty is fair (mostly), and the story is actually really good. Lots of character development for Sonic's friends.

The game has some problems though. The game is very janky in ssome places (especially in some of the boss battles), the cyber space levels are a step down both in terms of level design and control (worst parts of the game easily), and pop-in is frequent even when playing on an SSD. Also the only real piece of endgame content is getting the maps to 100%, which is a bit of a letdown. You can't replay bosses or cutscenes, another bummer. I hope some of these issues get fixed in future.

In the meantime we have future updates and expansions to look forward to. I can recommend this game, but not necessarily at $60. I recommend waiting for a sale because, as good as this game is, The problems mentioned above do kind of hold it back. Sonic Frontiers feels like a one-and-done game if you play it on the harder difficulties.

Let me just get this out of the way: there are no best of three matches. There is no side-decking. And it doesn't have cards from BODE yet. If you're looking for a way to officially simulate a competitive environment, you may want to hold off on downloading and playing this.

With that said, I think this game is good. Not great, but good. Best of one games with no match play means that you have to build your deck with lots of going first and second cards in the deck which can result in brick cards even if you win the coin flip.

Building your first few decks can be done for free through the crafting system. If you've played Duel Links, it's very similar. You can dismantle cards and craft cards of the same rarity. To craft a UR-rarity card, like Solemn Strike, you need to dismantle three other UR-rarity cards. I recommend crafting staples like Forbidden Droplets, Maxx C, Ash Blossom, and Nibiru first and then building a core on the cheap, like Sky Striker, though you can build Drytron and Tri-Brigade as well.

After the initial flood of gems, that's when the flow of premium currency slows to a crawl. If you're the kind of person who likes building lots of different decks then stick to Dueling Book, otherwise you're gonna be stuck with only one or two decks. Dueling Book and EDOPro are still better for experimentation and deciding what cards to buy for the physical game for this reason and because of the banlist.

You get ONE banlist, which uses an older OCG-inspired banlist. As mentioned before, Maxx C is legal and if you hate that card then you'll hate this game. Straight up.

It's supposed to be a simulation I guess, so the controls are . . . different. I suppose it takes getting used to. Game's good though, if you're patient.

The functionality from this little lightweight app is incredible. The perfect solution for customizable desktops.
