Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane has been one of the more interesting games I’ve played lately.
As both a fan of Ace Attorney and Danganronpa titles, I had high hopes for this one and let’s just say I wasn’t disappointed.

-Plot-
Without going into too much detail about the events in the game...
This fantasy world of magic and dragons is nothing new, but for this type of game it works surprisingly well. I very much enjoyed how the rules of this world come into play with your logical reasoning and arguments. The writers managed to make a GOOD story. Is it perfect? Absolutely not.
The structure of the story is a bit… Off.
It has the correct idea, we’re building up for this grand finale and just as we’ve hit the climax, instead of elegantly coming to a smooth end it sort of falls flat on it’s face.
After 1.50 update, some additional dialogue helped smooth out the ending, great job!
I felt as though a lot of the plot twists were a bit too easy to guess, but that’s something I’m pretty good at so I can’t be too hard on the writing for that.
As for the romantic element added to the plot, I must say it felt slightly out of place here.
I can’t say I disliked it, I very much enjoyed it. However… I feel like that’s not something people are looking for in a game like this.
To me, the plot as well as the setting is very much refreshing. It’s something different, which is honestly a very good thing in my books.

-Gameplay-
I have to say that the gameplay mechanics were good, but I feel like they could’ve been utilised a lot better. The satisfaction of presenting a piece of evidence gets stolen from you by Tyrion way too often.
Sometimes it also feels like you already know the truth and how to prove it, but Tyrion seems to think it requires solving a small word puzzle in his mind or some other special ability.
Now, I do feel like the abilities such as arguments and word puzzles work very well during investigation actually making them a lot more interesting and engaging.
But in trials it honestly feels like the game tries to hold your hand way too much.
The lack of any sort of punishment for your mistakes only amplifies this feeling. Again, this really ruins your satisfaction of figuring out the contradictions on your own.
I would highly suggest a mistake limit be put on trials similar to Ace Attorney games, so that it actually feels like there are consequences for not figuring out the case on your own.
Perhaps something to consider for a sequel?

-Visuals-
As much as I would love to praise the visuals of this game… I don’t honestly have much to say about them. Unfortunately, they fail to stand out from the crowd. A unique visual style would help to further give the game some personality. At least the characters and backgrounds are consistent.
Unfortunately the facial animations on some of the characters seem to cause weird artifacting and clipping on their faces, most notably on Aria Steelwind which is quite problematic.

-Audio-
Music gets a 10/10 from me, I was quite shocked by how good it really is. I do not regret spending extra on soundtrack either, many thanks for including that on Steam!
Voice acting is a bit difficult to judge as there are only a few fully voiced lines in the game, performance was excellent as every actor clearly did their best to fit the characters they had given their voices to.

-Technical-
Game appears to support a wide range of different resolutions as well as refresh rates, however the added increase in refresh rate doesn’t appear to be doing anything to the animations and gameplay mechanics.
On a 1440p monitor the game looks good but I don’t know how well it fares on 2160p and higher and I have my doubts about ultrawide resolutions being officially supported. I have now tested the game on a 4K monitor and it looks fantastic.

-Conclusion-
At the end of the day, Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane is both a story and a game of it’s own.
If you like Ace Attorney or Danganronpa games, this title is worth checking out even at full price.
I will definitely be looking forward to a sequel. 9/10

(Edit note: In accordance to 1.50 update, I have revised my review to account for the changes made to the dialogue as well as given an extra point to the overall score. + I have now tested the game on a 4K monitor.)
