First off, indie dev. This looks like a labor of love and they deserve the support.

Is this game a lot that we've seen before? Yeah, probably....but pretty much all rogue-like games these days are extremely similar with perhaps one or more gimmicks or differences. First time playing Megabonk, you'll probably say something along the lines of "oh it's X but with Y" or "it's a combination of X and Y". Pretty common in indie gaming, and let's not even talk about how typical it is with publisher games.

So, why pick this up if you've seen most of what it offers before? Because, it's a damn solid, fun game!

First off, performance.

This game of doesn't ask much from your hardware. So far it's run flawlessly on everything between my money pit of a system (i7 14700K, 5090, 64GB DDR5 RAM, etc...), and my steam deck....zero issues. I would imagine it would run fine on a system without dedicated graphics, but I don't have one to test that. No matter how many beasts are on the screen, no matter how much chaos...never notice any dip in framerate.

** Something of note, it works great with all types of displays...in particular my 5120 x 1440 g9 display, which many games resort to using black bars. The only "problem" is the HUD elements are on the edges of the screen and though I'm used to it, would be nice to be able to adjust it to be more centered.

All in all, smooth and stable on everything I tested, 10/10

Graphics

It's an indie game...the graphics are "basic" but not without charm. You can see from the screenshots, it's a fun art style akin to 90s era gaming, which happens to be nostalgic for me. The models and "stuff" appearing on the screen is varied enough to tell the difference of, I never am unable to tell what things are and it's simple to differentiate models/sprites.

Sound

So IMO roguelikes like this CANNOT gimp the soundtrack....and this doesn't. The music is great and you won't be annoyed with the BGM loop at all. Each character has their own theme music, my favorite currently being the gigachad one. The other sound effects are somewhat standard, though powerups and the like are exciting.

Gameplay

So I went into this just wanting something braindead to play between games...next thing I know I've already put in 4 hours and several runs; with the desire to do more. The upgrade system is trinkle enough to be very long lasting, but consistent enough to not feel like every run has a noticeable improvement. There's plenty of variety in the playstyle, even when playing the same characters. There's luck involved as usual..some runs just don't really get up and going, but others feel like you quickly get overpowered and breeze through.....till the game reminds you that "I can spawn more enemies than you can possibly kill" so you never feel like it's too easy. I'm not horribly far in the game but so far, I've already gotten my money's worth, and I know this is going to be a game I go back to often.

In terms of difficulty, it depends. Skill for the most part only impacts how long it takes you to progress, but it will never put you at an unsurpassable wall. Sure the game is going to poke fun at your "skill issues" but it's rather "meme" heavy as is, so it's never frustrating.

Gameplay loop is basically, jump in...walk around and collect things as you passively kill stuff, and build momentum. You'll eventually need to dodge, move around the map, look for specific things, avoid the "traps", and other fun elements. Eventually you'll die, go back to main menu, then you have fun spending your winnings on making your next run better. Same as all rogue likes. It's very fun and well executed though.

Overall:

Worth the full price. It's dumb fun and well made. Looks like the developer has been consistent with updates and improvements despite the game already being completely solid as is, and that's appreciated. Is this over the top, groundbreaking, etc.? No, but is this a game you're going to have a ton of fun playing? Absolutely.

I bought this game at launch; yes THAT launch. One of the most disappointing games I've ever purchased at the time. The trailer sold me, and coming off of Elite Dangerous, wanting something more than the grind it was, this game looked to fill the bill. Space sims were just a constant disappointment between Elite with the awesome sim-like space flight but no substance, Star Citizen which 13 years later is STILL not released, and then No Man's Sky which felt like the most alpha, early access game I've ever played.

Fast forward to now....This game exemplifies the "comeback story". They did not give up despite the awful release, they kept pushing to make the game what they envisioned....and even years ago, they already accomplished that. What exists now is the result of them getting to a great point and just powering forward.

The game itself is a very fun, relaxing, sometimes challenging, universe simulator. Depending on your preferred play style, this can be a base building sim, space fighting sim, fps, ADHD dopamine chaser 9000, etc. The action isn't extremely varied...after nailing down encounters, they start to feel very generic; which is probably one of the few things that this game still suffers from. Granted, you have to get probably 10s to 100s of hours in before you start feeling the repetition and generic encounters...and even then, there's still plenty novelty involved when exploring.

This game, first and foremost is a SPACE EXPLORATION, BASE BUILDING, CASUAL SURVIVAL game. It's difficult at first, but once you get a hang of things, at around 25+ hours in, you'll breeze through about anything, and then it's just "what do I feel like doing?" You can build another base, go explore and find some wild, crazy worlds, go hunt bounties, explore ruins, run missions, whatever you can want.

If you don't mind the repetitiveness or generic encounters/scenarios; this game is fantastic for space loving explorers. If anything, I'd recommend just jumping in during expeditions and playing those.

If you don't like turned based...I get it.

Though I don't either and I LOVE this game, so don't let that be the only thing stopping you. Honestly the hardest thing about this game is the "choice paralysis", but there are ways to overcome that. Piece of advise? Just play it and follow through with your choices. You can always start over.

If you have any, and I mean ANY love for the Harry Potter series, do yourself a service and play this game. Even if you don't care about Harry Potter, this game is fantastic and you'll still find yourself enjoying the world within.

After having about 100 hours in, I have 100% the game (aside from 3 house specific achievements), and while getting those achievements were a bit tedious, the game was very fun.

First off, the best things about this game, the world. It's very rare you can find yourself so immersed into a world. I found myself all the time just wandering around and looking for things. The first 10-20 hours are "magical", just being open to roam the castle, finding all the secrets, catching the Easter eggs and references; it was an amazing experience. The collectibles feel worthwhile to chase, and it's just fun seeing what the castle has to offer and exploring. Every spell you learn just opens it up any more! On top of that, the puzzles don't do what typical games do and almost insult you with how stupid easy they are. This game actually makes you sit and consider how to solve them. They don't feel like most games where it's just a "time padding" or obstacle, they actually take legitimate problem solving most of the time. Don't get me wrong, there's still the occasional tedium once you get very acclimated to some solutions that get repeated throughout the game, but it never gets annoying, at least it didn't for me (aside from some Merlin Trials). There are times when you think you're "gaming the game" when actually, it was the intended solution! All at the same time, you shouldn't find yourself being tempted to go online to seek solutions. Once you figure some out, the satisfaction is definitely there.

Collectors paradise. You like hunting for secrets, collectibles, etc? Yeah prepare to lose your life in this game.

Another thing that completely surprised me: the Combat. This game has no business having such a good combat system, it's just completely fantastic. Once you get the hang of switching your spell bar, the combat system is one of the best. Very fluid, engaging, flashy, and most of all, fun. I sometimes (despite them being completed) would just jump into the combat trials just to fight waves of enemies because it was so fun. Just experimenting with spell combinations, block and parrying attacks, seeing your character just completely fluid chain spells together with the "janky" animations most games suffere from, who knew want fighting would be so awesome! Some say it's "souls like" but I think that's a really weak comparison. Feels to me, based on recent games I've been playing, Spiderman remastered. Seriously, anyone that disagrees, go play that game, and then play this and see how your muscle memory ends up messing you up because the combat feels so similar. There are many similar elements that this has with Spiderman, but that's no way a bad thing.

Story, was pretty good. I'd say overall it was okay, though some side quests were sensational. The Main quest just was along the line of a good action movie, but it definitely fits the source material. I just don't have a lot to say about it though because despite having some great missions and really fun storyline. A lot of it is very forgettable, though it is good fun.

My only problem, if you're like me and a completionist, by the time you're doing the story missions, you are WAY overleveled. Even in hard mode, by the end I was almost 1 shotting every single monster. Some parts I feel like were supposed to be a struggle but a couple of DoowyWoowyComblooey attacks, big bad boss goes does in less than 10 seconds (the exception being the last boss...that was fun though damage phases were a button press.

Another very slight negative is how the crafting, farming, etc stuff gets useless really fast. I never found myself ever needing to use potions so I quickly ran out of reasons to use half of the crafting...which is a bit of a shame because there's a lot there. It just doesn't feel like it's worth doing, and even catching Beasts gets to that point, at least for me.

All this to say, I very much enjoyed it. Payed full price and feel like I got more than my money's worth. Despite the rocky launch with performance issues (ones that seem to be sorted now), This is one of the rare games that I would highly recommend right now soon after release, even not on sale. Kinda wish I could forget all about the game and jump right back in for the first time all over again.

This one is for the supportive shade!

You're not going to find many games with this good of a gameplay loop and fantastic voice acting. The amount of hours I'm in at this point and I've yet to hear a voice line that's been repeated.

THE best modern rogue-like game out there. Play it!

Definitely a fun game! Bought it without knowing much about it and was surprised how good the game was. It's really fun with the cutesy art style, yet comically messed up demonic themes. It's like Happy Tree Friends the game.

Basically it's a town building, rogue-like, light RPG. There's limited choices in the game that are fun, and a bit of story to it. The bread and butter of the game is the dungeon crawl and building up your cult, keeping the cute little ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ happy and leveling them, because they can help in a huge way while dungeon running. The combat feels super quick and reactive, there's a variety of weapons and abilities to play with but you'll likely find your favorites and stick to them. It's rather difficult to tell which weapons are better than others, as part of it depend on your playing style, and another part depends on their abilities. Sure they have little indicators that sometimes steer you the right direction, but always know the Godly weapons are the best...keep them. There's a HUGE variety of enemies, which can definitely make things difficult on your first encounter.

The city building is fun and definitely fleshed out...though even during endgame there's some tasks that just feel tedious to do over and over. Most of it is very fun though, as I personally enjoy running around collecting loot and such, and it's rather fun building your base and decorating, they definitely nailed that part, as you can change things around as needed without penalty.

As odd as it sounds, this is actually a rather relaxing game for the most part. It's near impossible to mess up to the point of no return, and there's maybe a small handful of irreversible consequences (and those are just for people like me that want to 100% in one play through). The dungeon running is fun and exciting, but not horribly stressful..if you die, the consequences are rather small. This game is PERFECT for the steam deck, though you may have issues seeing some parts on the small screen (such as enemy attacks and the sort).

Only issue I had, sometimes during the dungeon runs, there are really bad frame skips, which shouldn't be happening on my system (latest i7, 3080ti, etc). Though seems like the issue no longer occurred after a recent GPU driver update, so who knows if you'll run into it, just something worth mentioning as there are many threads online about the issue.

Overall, not bad for the price. I was able to 100% it under 30 hours, but I think I'll continue coming back for casual play and when there's updates.

Absolutely fantastic game and soundtrack. Just sit and immerse yourself in Tetris, it's an experience to say the least.
