Early Access Review
This game is still REALLY clunky unfortunately. I'm hoping that when they get to v1.0 that it will be better. My concerns (in no particular order) after trying this out with friends are:
- I (as DM) could see health bars and both myself and others had the game set to show full health, but no one else could see health bars.
- It's clear that the UI is setup for VR and not for those of us playing on a screen. For example, the initiative tracker covered up part of the character sheets.
- You'd think that pressing esc would close out of active windows, and it does, but it always brings up the in-game menu.
- They have "Dungeon" in the name, but the maps are all outside. You can place pre-made buildings and you can put down floors as ceilings, but no actual dungeons.
- Placing floors as ceilings makes it hard to go to minis because you can't see them below the "floor-ceiling". You have to navigate below the "floor-ceiling" to find them.
- You can't prevent people from moving outside of their turn. So you could build an awesome map and then players could just run all over it and you can't stop them. And really, there's not much else to do.
- Combat is still manual, to the point that (near as I could figure out), you need to role your d20 and add the modifier yourself. And when rolling damage, you again have to pull out the correct dice, roll them, and then manually update hit points.
- Even updating hit points was a bit of a pain. You have to open the character sheet, then unlock it, do the math to subtract the damage, and then close the character sheet.
- Multiple similar enemies was an issue to. For example, the combat tracker showed all 5 goblins, but as DM I had no idea which goblin was which. I eventually renamed the goblins to be like "Goblin 1", "Goblin 2", etc., but we had to leave combat and restart it for the names to take effect.
- The goblins in the map I loaded didn't have any weapons equipped (maybe if I placed a goblin myself it would have?). So I would have had to add an item to the goblin and then equip it for it to show up in their actions.
- The game constantly brought up the character sheet for which ever goblin I had last selected, regardless of where we were in the initiative tracker. So how do you change? Clicking on the initiative tracker (right or left click) did nothing. You had to find the mini, then click it, then the character sheet would change.
- Some of the options to find minis on the map were greyed out. Maybe those aren't implemented yet? I don't know. Double clicking seemed to work (sometimes).
- Interacting with objects is very limited in non-VR mode. You can pick them up and drop them.
- Rolling dice you'd think would be cool and sometimes it is. But two reasons it's not. First, you have to add the attacking modifiers yourself (if there's a way to have the system to the addition, it isn't intuitive). Second, the dice roll on the land. Often this is fine, but if they roll down the side of a hill, you're going to be waiting awhile for the number to show up. Neat feature maybe, but stalls game play unnecessarily.
- The fog of war is very limited. Like, you can put fog of war around a building, but once inside the fog of war, you see everything in the building. There's no real way to hide a secret door. And although I put myself in player mode, you could still see into the fog of war on some maps in some situations.
- Doors aren't functional currently (again, if they are, it wasn't clear to me at all how to open them). So if a door is shut, your players aren't getting through it.
- You can't rebind the keys.
- Placing items is really janky. They spin around sometimes at random and if the floor isn't completely level, I couldn't get the walls to be either. I also couldn't get a ladder to lean up against a wall.
- I could only seem to full dive into humanoids, not creatures.
- Running around with some items in your hand make random clunking noises. I get it, the bucket is swinging around and hitting things. Neat? Not really... I had a spear another time and it also make the noise when I ran around. Really??? A person can't walk around the halls of a building without banging a spear into everything?
- The in-game grid gets covered up by floors. I didn't check specifically, but I bet the in-game grid won't show up in buildings.

I can see how this could be good in the future. Here are some of my suggestions:
- Considering preventing people from moving when it's not their turn in the initiative order (during combat only).
- Have esc. close the currently opened window and only go to the options if no windows are opened.
- Figure out how to get dice rolls for weapons to work and allow players to target creatures.
- Apply the damage from weapons, don't make the DM have to do it.
- Clean up the UI for those using monitors.
- Make sure creatures have the necessary items equiped.

The music and background sounds are a cool feature, but I'd suggest leaving the cool features out until the main game play is fixed. Our consensus was that not everyone at our table would be comfortable using this tool (and probably not everyone's computer could probably run it) and that we'd probably still all be playing in D&D Beyond to track characters and roll dice. Which is a shame, because we can see the potential here. Like, figuring out if a creature has half or three-quarters cover would easier and stumbling into monsters would be more organic.

Buy the game to support the group if you want, but I'd strongly suggest waiting until they fix some of the issues I've mentioned above. I'm looking for a tool that is reasonably priced (which this is) but doesn't add to the complexity of the game. I want it to make my life of a DM easier, not harder. Fiddling with sound effects is cool, having to click a million times and do all the math in my head is not.
