This game tries to be an 'original' action shooter with a unique system of 'high flying action'. It fails in every aspect but 'shooter'. The gameplay is reminescent of early 2000 era shooters with the added gimmick of being able to jump really hight and 'float' in a given direction. Beyond that, the gameplay itself is awful. If you play as a healer, prepare to die a lot, and when you're not dying, you're just hitting 'E' by defualt because your weapons are garbage. I will likely never recommend this game to anyone who enjoys shooters. It brings nothing new to the genre and adds nothing in the way of enjoyment. This is easily forgettable and already dated.

With all the controversy surroudning this game right now, it's kind of hard to get an ubiased opinion. Don't let the DLC doomsayers scare you. Here are the facts.

What you get for buying the standard 59.99 edition is this, 12 very unique Hunters and 3 very unique Monsters. Same as every other purchase option.

One of the first things you'll notice if you try the game is that the graphics are stunning. The more you explore the maps as either Hunter or Hunted you'll see just how alive each unique map is. Each with their own docile and hostile creatures to aid or endanger players. This game is not without it's problems. There are bugs, like any other first week title and only a few of them serious (though rare).

The price point: This game offers three ways to buy. Standard, Digital Delux and PC Monster Race. All of which are effectively the same. They all have the same numbers of Hunters, Monsters, Maps and Game Modes. The only difference being that the Digital Delux comes with a season pass and the Monster Race edition contains a YET UNRELEASED Monster and two UNRELEASED Hunters and some skins. So in essence, the larger price tag is only a Pre-Purchase of unreleased content. It is not free or exclusive. Though according to their current price plan for the Monster and Hunters, it ends up being a little cheaper than pricing each out individually.

The matchmaking and Preference systems leave more than a little to be desired. While it does give you a slightly better chance of being able to play what you want, the chances are pretty low to begin with and the only way to guarantee you'll play your top choice is to stick with a match and wait your turn.

Evolve also offers a fairly unique single player option. While the game itself doesnt have a true story mode or any compelling backstory as of yet, the single player option allows you to continue to progress your characters and your account should you lose your internet (travel with your laptop, forget to pay your bills, whatever the reason). So when you decide that you need a break from the online community, and being honest, who doesnt from time to time, you can drop the multiplayer action and trade it in for some single player and not lose out on your progression. The bots that play the other hunters and monsters could still use some fine tuning, but they do a decent job.

TL:DR

10/10 Sound and Visuals
6/10 Replay Value for lone Hunters (make some friends)

Knowing what I know now, I would still purchase the game as is if offered when I bought it the first time. Avoid the 'discussions' forum. It's all rants.

Early Access Review
Purchased about a year ago, still in "early alpha" and Early Access with only the tutorial available. The game itself has potential, but eh glacier speed at which the developers are moving is frustrating for an active gamer looking for something fun. Pass this one over.

Update: So it's been 2 years and 7 months since I purchased this game and it's STILL in early alpha, lol. At this point, I'm willing to believe that the developers are only working on this during their downtime from their day jobs.
