I was hoping this would be a teletext inspired play on Hypnospace Outlaw, a similar point 'n' click puzzle game but have not been having any fun with this. Didn't get far even with a walkthorugh before finding the puzzles obtuse instead of difficult. Right from the start it's unclear what is a password input. In the next puzzle there was a hidden input box that looked more like a bug with the scaling on a 4K monitor that required a semi-random guess on my part to complete. This being when entering a teletext page file name into a manager interface. . I tried the next puzzle but without a guide it's obtuse to work out what you're supposed to do and with a guide or hints it seems too trivial.

In the end I would have refunded if I didn't miss the window by a day.

It very much looked like the kinda of game that's missing from my library, however I've been left somewhat disappointed. Specifically I spent way too much time fighting the path finding system to work out how to get cars to stay in lanes or go to traffic light instead of swerving into oncoming traffic. For trivial arrangements it works but anything complicated it starts to fall apart. Especially for tight turns where the arrows keeping pointing in the wrong direction.

If the road building does get more refined then I might pick this up again but refunded for now.

Grabbed to play with my partner and both of use very quickly turned off it. Momentum mechanics are poorly explained in a goofy, unreadable manual while also feeling a bit jank. Newsgrounds level physics but with tight timings and unforgiving level design from the get go. Unless you want something to brutalise you or are already pros at Celeste, I'd give it a miss.

Edit: For some additional clarity, when starting the local multiplayer no tutorial started. No idea if this is expected behaviour or not. We got a message from one penguin about Charlie showing us the ropes but couldn't actually find him in the village to start a tutorial.

After finishing the tropical level, the first after the tutorial stage from the demo, I have already finished ~45% of the game. That's about 1.5 hours and others are saying as per my suspicion that there are only two more levels as you see in the map screenshot plus one alt level each biome.

Simply put, it's too short and I'm honestly disappointed. It was the one game I even cared about in a while, enough to even pre-order and now I'm mulling over whether to get a refund. If you complete a level thoroughly, you've practically done everything in that biome. Compared to Overcrowded, another strategic but more tycoon orientated indie game, Terra Nill is poor value. If there were more animals to discover, more scenarios with different balances to accommodate said animals in a given climate then I'd be satisfied.

Edit: Decided on refunding and grabbing on a >40% sale.Hopefully the feelings of disappointment should have passed and can finish the game guilt free.

Great atmosphere but once you find out hours in you've been playing wrong and have to restart the game, not only do you feel like ♥♥♥♥ but also out of pocket. Unless you already know how to play the game don't bother.

Nice little puzzle game that you can pick up from time to time. Minesweeper for the new age.

Recommended Alternative: Emily Is Away

I don't like not liking games. Even in the worst games I have found something to them, something I could like and The Beginners Guide took that one thing (the early experiences) and ruined them. As you can guess this is walking simulator in possibly the strictest form. I don't know whether the story is true but if so then I might actually dislike this more...

Spoilers Ahead:

Story

The narrative itself is dull and feels like an emo teen's diary. There is Coda who keeps wanting to make prison games and games about loneliness and Davey (The Narrator) wants to try and stop Coda's depression as he perceives it. Davey shares his games and tries to bring Coda more positive reinforcement by fans but instead of appreciating Davey's effort to help him, Coda just shuts himself more off from the world. Depression Quest has a better presentation of depression and that was a ♥♥♥♥ show of galactic proportions. Coda in the end is a complete ♥♥♥♥ by not only refusing to explain to Davey his emotions but also to then blame his depression on Davey when he tries to fix it. But wait, Davey then blames himself and ends up with him degrading himself to the point where he likely is becoming depressed and it seems just so stupid to not either make it adamant that the prison game obsession is unhealthy and that Coda needs help or just let him fall. I should really stop before it gets too enraging to describe.

Experience

The early experiences are well done and convey their meaning really well, especially the house tidying one but the further on this gets, the more lacklustre and repetitive they become. You can only beat a depressed horse so much before people think there needs to be a major intervention and it shows. 45 minutes in I felt bored as the same concepts kept coming up and you were constantly beaten over the head with 'Oh No! Coda's depressed what should I do?' without an answer. That is more a story aspect but in a walking simulator, the experience relies on the story and penetrates throughout.

Format

This is not a game in any from. There is no fail state and would have been exactly the same as a movie. The interactions were gimmicks at best and didn't overall effect anything. If all the projects were actually made as projects, then I feel this shouldn't be a paid product. You might argue enough is changed to be classed as fair use but it still feels wrong to monetize off someone else's work when they didn't want it to be shared and when they feel so vulnerable about it being shown. If Davey wanted to get his personal message across to Coda, then he would have made it free.

Overall

It's a walking simulator with a dull story (a la emo teen) and lacks intrigue. It works and runs well but it's an hour and twenty minutes I want back. Score is good however seldom used. Don't waste your time and if I hadn't got this in a Humble Bundle, I would definitely have returned it and played Fahrenheit instead.

Anyone recomending this is your enemy. It's a grind, it's buggy, not even an overclocked i7 @ 5 GHz with a GTX 970 can run it well. Seriously, it's doing the rust effect and it is P2W. If Kasperksy hadn't been updated on that one morning and told me 'Oh ♥♥♥♥ DON'T PLAY H+G' I would have been infected like the other guy. Ironically it was also the same day I was feeling like giving this another shot.

Overall 11/10 Torture Porn for you and your sadistic PC Not even John Cena MIDI or Limp Bizkit NIghtcore or even Bonzi Buddy would be as buggy, P2W and suicide inducing as this.

I played this first back in Beta loads on a demo account for practicality and I really enjoyed it and it felt like a fresh new FPS that I could enjoy and not feel like a complete Noob. I kept saying wait and wait to see if the community will stick together as the last FPS I said this to was Titanfall. That community well fell like a Titan from space. But with it now being F2P I don't actually know what I think of it.

I have had bad experiances with games changing massively. I bought TF2 about week before it went F2P and felt cheated when all I got was a hat after spending I can't remember how much but something like £10. With this as I see it, the change to F2P will overall benefit the community. After a few games I hadn't been mixed with griefers or trolls and I still had an amazing time but there were more peoploe to play against. Considering the prices of heros and skins those who paid earlier got a bargin on what the prices are now. TF2 is still popular after doing the same thing and after the Planetary Anihilation fiasco this seems to be fair.

My only complaint is that I can't buy a bundle to unlock all the stuff original buyers had (except their exclusive skin). Basically a mega hero bundle. If they did a pay once get all heros free model like smite did then I would buy it and as long as original buyers got this for free then the world would be in balance. More players, less F2P BS and a good experiance for all.
