This is one of those games that will actively punish you for even daring to play the way you want to play. They actively use the games economy as a balancing factor to discourage use of certain vehicles. Not only that but this game has 0 variety when it comes to gamemodes. In fact, almost all of the gamemodes haven't had an impactful change in years, just being TDM with side objectives sprinkled in. The only exceptions are the PVE modes which have been left to rot, or playing Air Simulator which requires a decent amount of skill to play.

One of the worst things about this game though is the company behind it. This game has so many predatory mechanics that encourage you to spend your money just to have some chance at advancing through the game. The costs of single vehicles and their modifications have skyrocketed in the past years, however the rewards you get for playing have been reduced to the point that it is nearly required to pay for premium time/vehicles in order to have the chance to grind the game at a decent pace. So you see all those shiny vehicles being shown off in the images? Well to get there you need to get a few hundred vehicles, and good luck getting there in less than 6 months without paying or constantly devoting time to this game. The company also likes to balance the game based on statistics on paper, meaning that vehicle performance doesn't matter to them, only player performance does.

Not only do they not care about what you have to say, but they have recently actively defended their actions of making the grind WORSE, by saying that they don't want players to grind new vehicles too quickly. Top this off with the company being disconnected from the players, a fractured playerbase, Gaijin making changes that players clearly stated were a bad idea, and predatory monetization you get War Thunder. Just look at some of War Thunders controversies in the past. It gets nutty with how much this company has gotten away with.

However, this game can be quite fun to play. While I was lucky that I was able to get the vehicles I wanted before the grind was so atrocious, I always see myself back at lower tiers. While I think that this game is in a horrible state, there are ways to enjoy it. Squad up with a few friends and just go at it, play custom battles, or just goof around playing in ways that don't make sense but are just fun. Don't let other players discourage you if your not playing at your best, just ignore them and have fun. That's really all there is to it, just try and have fun however you want, and make sure to reach out for help if you're struggling. There are tons of players, squads, and communities out there willing to help, so feel free to reach out on the forums, chats in the game, or even the subreddit.

3rd Update: Nothing has changed, Gaijin simply handed out pity points to try and appease players. They are back on their BS with another reward reduction to the battlepass (despite costing the same), balance changes pulled straight out of a dump, $70 for a single vehicle, and little to no rewards for doing well. Good job Gaijin, I gave up all hope years ago and you still manage to impress me with how much greedier you can get.
