I've owned this game for years. It's always been a good game and one I would recommend for a variety of reasons but I have decided to only now review this game because, having just got a Steam Deck (yesterday), I've found that its almost the perfect handheld game.
If you own a Deck then I very much recommend that you get this game as the controls feel almost ideally suited for this game making it a breeze to play. As well as this the Deck's hardware just seems to suit the game's brutal and dystopian art style and I've had no problems with any technical issues (so far and thats 8 hours into a play-through).
So thats my Deck Rant over.
Regarding the Game:
It's got an excellent plot with a creative and interesting background and lore to explore. It has fantastic level design and its great fun using your powers to find interesting approaches to solving your missions. Sound design is good as are vocals and suit the setting.
Worth buying on any platform (but especially a Deck)

I am really liking this game. It's not perfect yet - the mouse controls can be a little fidgetty and sometimes deploying your troops can be irritating but thankfully there does seem to be a reassuring committement by the developer to actively improve this game. It seems to have regular updates and beta testing phases and also includes a rather novel in-game bug reporter so I'm confident that problems can be solved given time.

The game itself also has an interesting scope and scale to it. On several occassions I've finished some battle and looked back at the battlefield and just had a DAAAMN thought looking at the several thousand casualties that have just happened. It just manages to nail that sweet spot between the numbers being awesomely high enough for serious strategy (biggest battle for me so far had some 100,000 troops) but just low enough to get some sense of espirit-des-corps amongst your general and his army - when you've just fought the Battle of Bull Run and won but taken some 40% casualties amongst your brigade and lost several officers who've fought with you in a few battles you do feel a sense of pride and regret.

Graphics are simplistic and sound could be better but you don't really play games like this for gfx or sound do you?

For the old timers out there this game kind of reminds me of the Close Combat Series but about a 100 times better. If you liked that game then you won't go wrong with this.

TL;DR - Boring - Triple AAA superbly made but boring as hell.

Right ...... so I feel that I can write this review after putting 80+ hours into this game. And I have reached the decision, painful as it was, that I cannot recommend this game for one reason. Its Boring. Like mindnumbing boring.

Don't get me wrong - it has nice graphics, an interesting fight mechananism and good music and sound but RPGs are, in my opinion, decided by the story and how you affect it. And the story line for this game just made me lose all interest after about 20 hours in. It was the wrong side of highbrow with too many moral decisions but the wrong kind of moral decisions so that rather than a simple good/bad choice you ended up with shades of grey that just made the world and everything in it bleak and dull. The characters were painfully intense and just oozed so much emotion that I just couldn't force myself to care. The levels were the same - beautiful caves and caverns, a wonderful city but all kind of joyless which tied into the storyline but the storyline was boring so I didn't really care. The Estate you captured and turned into your base was also the same - beautiful detail and fully upgradeable but I just didn't care for it.

In short I feel that too much thought and artistic input was put into this game and it would have been a lot better if they had just done a more simple but involved storyline and kept the choices to a more generic good/bad mode.

Damn this game annoys me - it was horrible when it first came out, buggy and with huge gaping holes in its gameplay, graphics and features.

1 Year later and after several patches, DLC and general testing WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE BY A HALF DECENT TEAM OF PROGRAMMERS, this game is alright.

For new purchasers I'm sure they'll love it and give it high praise but sadly for me the rubbish deployment has soured it a touch.
