I never played the original ASCII version of DF, and I don't think that has had a massive impact on my experience. The first 40 hours of the game were confusing and i lost many forts to trivial things like not having an easy source of water, and digging too deep too fast, but even through that i still had a great time figuring it out. This is a game of learning and building on past failures. External tutorials from youtube are great, but not necessary if you're willing to fail a few times even to the same problems. Whole heartedly one of my new favorites, I'm glad the steam release of DF came and gave us the graphics that i feel made the game worth getting into.

being that i have over 500 hours in this game, id say its probably my favorite game on steam, possibly my favorite game period. to those of you interested in a game about story and also strategy... and also a potentially endless stressful game with so much content that i myself have yet to get to, then this game is for you.
