I like HELLDIVERS 2 and think it CAN be a very fun game. However, the way Arrowhead has handled things over the past few months has somewhat ruined the game for me and many others. Here is a list of the major issues.

  • Game launched and was not balanced well (understandable).
    • The majority of the primary weapons, support weapons, and stratagems were underpowered.
    • The only viable (and I do mean viable. Not strong, not overpowered, just viable) pieces of kit were the Breaker shotgun, the Railgun, and the Bubble Shield backpack.
  • The enemies were not well balanced.
    • There were too many “tank” or “elite” enemy types which took a lot of heavy firepower to kill. Something that is in limited quantity by design. For reference, Chargers at the time did not die to one rocket to the head and their “weak spots” were quite the opposite.
    • Because of these imbalances, a “meta” was formed. People used the Railgun exclusively because it was the only consistent way to deal with the Charger enemies. Primary weapons are functionally useless against them, and there are too many of them to use our normal stratagems on every one of them. The Breaker was the “best” primary weapon because it killed fast enough to keep you from being swarmed and it had enough ammo to keep you going. The Bubble shield helped you tank the all too common one shots that multiple bigger enemies could do, as well as help minimize the slow-down effect of the Terminids enemies.
    • Instead of rebalancing the enemies or buffing the other weapons/stratagems, AH decided to gut the Railgun and nerf the other too down to the level of the other stratagems.
  • The game is riddled with crashes and bugs. Every patch has a “known issues” list that only seems to get bigger.
    • I don’t want to criticize this too much as Arrowhead is (for the game size) a small team. Game development is hard and bug fixing is harder. That being said, it still is frustrating for players as it feels like the content updates make the game “worse” because of the new (and sometimes) old bugs.
  • Sony forces Arrowhead to force a PSN account for all players for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reasons.
    • This prevented millions of players from playing the game due to PSN being banned in their country. Their stated reason was for “...protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games.” Here is a short list of Sony’s history with “security.”
      • July 2008: PlayStation Site Targeted with SQL-Injection Attack, Prompting Visitors to Download Fake “Antivirus Scanner”
      • April 2011: Hackers Access Personal Data of 77 Million Sony PlayStation Network Users
      • May 2011: Personal Details on 25 Million Sony Online Entertainment Customers Stolen
      • June 2011: Sony Pictures Website Hacked, Exposing One Million Accounts
      • November 2014: Hackers Steal 100 Terabytes of Data from Sony Pictures
      • December 2014: PlayStation Network Taken Down by Christmas DDoS Attack
      • August 2017: Hacker Group Accesses Sony Social Media Accounts
      • September 2023: Sony Investigates Alleged Hack
      • October 2023: Sony Notifies Employees of Data Breach
  • Arrowhead continues to nerf everything “meta” in the game while barely buffing any weapons or stratagems.
    • Any buffs that do appear, marginally improve the gear’s usefulness. While some gear was more usable after these updates, it still didn’t fix the core issue. The main problem is that most of the usable equipment in the game is bad. Like bordering on unusable bad. You were setting yourself up for failure if you didn’t take a “meta” loadout because of how poorly the game was balanced. All players wanted (and still want) is for everything to be viable. We want to be able to experiment with our loadouts and try new things but we can’t.
  • The CEO (Pilestedt) steps down from CEO position and takes on the CCO position to help push the game and the balancing in a better direction.
    • First major patch as the CCO is mostly buffs. While a good step in the right direction, it was far from “the fix.”
    • I cannot find the quote at the moment so you’ll have to take my word for it, but Pilestedt basically explained that they would only buff stuff now and there would be no more nerfs.
  • Team takes summer vacation and delays the next patch to make sure it is at its best (this all makes sense). Patch releases and it’s mostly nerfs while also introducing a new difficulty level and several new “elite” enemies.

I think I’ve made my point. The game is super fun and has so much potential but the devs are seemingly doing everything in their power to get in the way of its future. The needless nerfs (in a PvE game btw), the endless bugs and issues, and the Sony fiasco (which still hasn’t been resolved fully) are all adding up. If the game's direction changes for the better and the Sony issue is fully resolved then I can 100% recommend this game. Until then however, I cannot.

And to any players who no longer care about the Sony issue, please rethink that opinion. Just because it might not affect you anymore doesn’t mean it’s not no longer a problem. I’m aware that this is Sony’s fault, not Arrowhead’s. Still, we need to make our voices heard for those players who are affected.

As of 09/17/24, Arrowhead has fixed many of the balancing issues I brought up prior. The game is in a great state as of now. The Sony problem is still not fixed and should not be forgotten. That being said, the game is very fun now and plays well.

Best way to describe it is if you took Risk of Rain and made it a reverse bullet hell. Easily worth the $3 price tag.
