Great game. Played the Unity port. Remember though that this is an old game. You better know what you're doing in the character creation if you're making a custom class or else you're gonna have great difficulties, such as next to no HP gain with levels. In the Unity port, VERY much recommend picking "smaller dungeons" cause the originals can be very very large. They're still a decent size with the option ticked on. Doesn't change stuff like main quest dungeons or ones with a set layout. I recommend modding it a bit, such as the DREAM package of graphics and sounds stuff, Basic Roads and Travel Options, Handpainted 3d models etc.
I liked how the quest npc right after completing the last main quest told me to bugger off, they didn't like me anymore. Guild quests felt a bit underwhelming to me after the cool stuff they had in the later games. Pickpocketing and Mercantile are kinda stupid good together. Enchanting your own stuff makes the whole game a pushover. But if you like a good ol power fantasy, being an unbeatable god that hurls death spells at 5 mana cost, then yeah its great. This game's been my COPIUM for how Path of Exile has become.
Edit: tried the original again and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is so much jankier than i remembered. Play Daggerfall Unity.

If you're a new player:
You cannot sell anything unless you buy a premium stash tab. poewiki.net is your bible. poe.ninja is a good place for item prices. Look up a build guide. Minion builds are a bad idea right now. Awakened PoE Trade is a VERY GOOD addon. Go to filterblade.xyz and pick something not strict.

Some ramblings:

1. most of my playtime is on the standalone launcher. About 1870 hours rn across all characters minus void league/deleted ones. Only some of those hours is with the Steam client. They're the same game though, the files just live elsewhere and the login screen is slightly different.

2. The game is still playable and might be fun too. The big profits now lie in "loot goblins" though instead of being spread out more, or content that doesn't rely on killing monsters. Heist and Expedition which is opening boxes are still good sources of loot, but who knows, maybe those will be decimated too. There is no point in juicing maps to the fullest anymore, but mid and low tier might be good.

3. Crafting is expensive and rng. I don't find that fun. Harvest made crafting very accessible to everyone, that's been nerfed to oblivion from it's initial state. There are so many mods you can get on items and the good ones have such low weightings that unless you have omega luck (or a ton of currency to blow) you're gonna get some completely unusable stats.

They've removed a lot of what made the game fun for me, but there's still just enough left that it isn't total garbage. Headhunter is still good for the attributes :) otherwise super dedge. Harvest still has some worthwhile crafts if you wanna supergrind the currency to use those crafts. The fact they removed mana reservation efficiency mastery and reduced the life one is really infuriating though.

Concluision: The best times are probably behind us, however there is still some good left. Don't juice maps, it's not profitable anymroe. Play door opening simulator (heist) while you still can. They've made some absolutely infuriating fun-killing decisions, and hiding one of the biggest changes the game has ever gotten from patch notes (maybe accidental), hence the hate.

if you coming from skyrim its gonna feel like ♥♥♥♥ to start but when you just push through it, its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing. this game washes the floors with skyrim, man. you can make your own godtier spells and basically this game is one of my favourite games ever made now.
