I just tried it. Gotta say, it's soothing like the background scenery of a Studio Ghibli movie. Absolutely love it, would recommend it to anyone wanting something simple and calming to fiddle around with, or maybe artists and worldbuilders to get some simple ideas.

Suggestions for content!:

Grassy ground with small shrubs, tufts of grass, flowers, stones, reedy waterlines, capable of being picked from another list just like the colors. Ambient animals could be squirrels, tiny colorful songbirds, or hints fish in the water eating bugs.
Alternate terrains could be snow with drifts, more stones, sticks, or frozen waterlines, small evergreens. Ambient animals of snowshoe rabbits or crows.
Desert might be sand with tumbleweeds, dry grasses, small or tall cacti, rocky shorelines, wisps of dust, ambient animals of wrens, snakes, or hawks.
Tropical could be pale sandy waterlines, palms, exotic flowers, ambient rainbow parrots, etc.

I also want to suggest that we can build land up similarly with the same dynamics as the roofs, curving or becoming rugged. Picking terrain types again as one would from the color palette, but mixing up and building as we go. Perhaps the same or similar effect with forests or flora in the landscape, and the broader an area of nature, the more little ambient animals would be produced.

Apologies if this seems a bit much, but what you have is so stunning and wonderful, the idea of making little towns with "parks" or nestled between two peaks in the woods, with potential to have a river run through or around, or to make islands, sounds like a perfect set of future steps. :D

I thought I'd written a review when I bought and finished the game months ago, and I'm shocked that I hadn't..
I've not played a lot of Point & Click games, and those that I have, weren't anything like this.

Since it's been so long, I'll just give a short and sweet version: This game is f#@king awesome.

And I'll be honest, I absolutely suck at the kinds of puzzles and half the problem solving that was in this. I needed a guide. But just as honest, I don't care that I did. I'm glad I did. The story, theme, setting, just the entire tone of this had me dying for more. Several months later, writing this, remembering the best scenes, I STILL want more. I want a series of novels. I want a mini-series. I'll even take a movie. Hell, this game felt almost like all of that somehow as it was. I still get chills thinking about it.
The voice acting, characters, settings, all fantastic. Favorite side-character was definitely Ever Faithful Leobuilt. Spooky and fascinating, full of a lot of information. Best creepy robotic voice I have ever heard, and I love it. I wish I had a text-to-speech reader that sounded like him.

I'll say that this game is incredibly depressing, bittersweet, and and a bit nihilistic in a couple ways if you're someone looking for hope for the future. Even The Good Ending of this game still had me contemplating how long anything might keep existing. But... there was so many unanswered aspects of the world lore, I can't do much but keep wondering.

My only negatives are probably that some of the puzzles were impossible without a guide, and that, as other reviews have written, it seems to raise more questions about the world than it answers. And I guess I'm... sort of okay with that. Although, I'd rather read a series of novels set through the history of the world to learn more.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I love this game. I'm going to have to replay it again soon. lol

Hidden Folks is one of the most unexpectedly charming, simple yet amusingly overwhelming "Where's Waldo" (meets a microscopic "Shel Silverstein") games I've been happy to find, in a time in my life where I suddenly started missing exactly that kind of fun mental and visual exercise that I admittedly didn't always appreciate so as much as a child. lol

Calm, relaxing, silly, subtle, yet just enough challenge to keep me coming back when I need a distraction from life and want to get lost for a 30 to 60 minutes with a hot drink and my cat snoring beside me.

This is a game I suggest to every friend that wants something laid back with zero pressure, and might enjoy the unique fun of "mouth sounds" for literally every sound effect. lol

Side note: I'm not sure I'm ready to buy the DLC though, for the small amount of content for that price. If more had been added to it, I would have jumped right on that as a big fan of the original stuff. I'll probably grab it when it's on a bigger sale...

The most positive I can say so far: Amusing. I'm interested in the weird and silly future content planned. I'm personally just fine with it being a bit rough, because I admire the work put in already and a number of the jokes so far.

The most negative is: "Oh god, why the F#CK did I buy this? REALLY. I know it was a dollar and I'm cheap AF and love a good dirty joke and parody now and then, but now 90% of the game suggestions Steam has for me now after playing this is an endless stream of the most bland, samey and lame Hentai "puzzle" games and visual novels ever."

The only upside of this is at least is I can sift through a crapton of terrible things and find the gems for my ridiculously nice anime-loving cat-obsessed friend.
You know the kind. Tiny but fierce. Innocent but kinky. Basically catgirl incarnate.

What was I saying again...?

Oh yeah. Reviewing.

Neutral-to-Positive on this game.
Needs more work, obviously.
Price is great for the content so far.
Buy this if you want your exploration queue to be inundated with hentai.
(I personally didn't, but I'm learning from my mistakes.) lol

Apologies to the company this review wasn't more helpful.
The Fish Scientist lady is an utter unlikeable b!#ch in every conceivable way. Not sure if that was intentional. Probably was. If so, good job. lol

[Edit]

So apparently I should have read most of the negative reviews. Especially the ones that point out this game is not being worked on.

Oh well. Interesting splurge for a buck. No real regrets. Sort of. lol

"What an odd thing."
- Me, squinting at my screen late at night after playing a level or two, not even remembering when I bought this.

"How peculiar."
- Me again, discovering the red blocks make an enjoyably crunchy noise like walking on icy snow.

"Whooaah... NEAT."
- Also me, enjoying the meteoric looking mines that blast everything around them.

"That's so bizarre."
- Still me, marveling at ghost balls that break walls.

9/10
Lovely art+science+game.
Soothing and cathartic to destroy things in a chill way.

Would be 10/10, but was disappointed that blocks don't clatter on the floor as well and the blue lights from the mines don't tinkle or crash like thick glass lenses on the floor. Would be excellent ASMR experience if they did. lol

Technically 10/10 anyway, because it's also awesomely priced.

Nice game. Not anything impressive, but it works. Good for killing a few minutes with grindy clicking, though I would not at all call this a puzzle game like tetris or anything similar. Basically, if you want to get carpal tunnel making a score of approximately 1.5 million every hour, this'll do it. lol

I played a few rounds to get a feel for it before blowing over an hour on a single game and making 3rd place on the leader board. I figure you could make the top rank with about 2-2.5 mil or something within about 2 hours.
So if you feel like some mindlessly quick color-clicking to conquer a simple game, you'll probably like this. lol

Not sure if it's worth 2 bucks though. I paid 50 cents, and maybe a buck sounds good. So if interested, grab it on sale.

I like tedium and grindy mellow games as a way to relax.

But this was/is kind of a disappointment, even when dialing down to my lowest standards.
And I say this as someone that played "loading screen simulator" and enjoyed it.

Perhaps part of my issue with this game is that for the puzzle style, the theme could be literally anything, and dating just seems kind of weird.
But, nah. I'm fine with that.
Maybe it's the fact that you just endlessly play puzzles that are constantly almost the exact same thing, over and over with almost no variation.
I think I'm technically fine with that too, at least while I keep low standards.
Or could it be the fact I'm just trying to compete against myself endlessly for a slightly higher score every time?
Ehhhhhhhhh, maybe.
I think, ultimately, and much to my own surprise, the one thing that gets me twitching irritably about this game is the fact the music NEVER CHANGES, EVER.
It's the same endless droning, on and on and on, making the tedium actually unbearable after just a few minutes of play. And trust me when I say, I keep opening this game all the time to try and enjoy it, only to end up feeling slightly tortured.
------------------------------------

PLEASE, make the sound and volume adjustments different, so I can at least turn off the game music while hearing the other sounds of gameplay and listen to my own music in the background.

I promise I'll change my rating to reccomended if you guys can do this...

Charming, colorful, fun to kill some time with.
Easy to move up the ranks even if you suck at it, like I seem to, because I have the worst coordination ever. lol (Bless The Hake!)
Would definitely reccomend this.

8/10

--------------

Suggestions to creators to make this game even better:

- Add a (ctrl+z) undo feature when making custom ships, because missing by a pixel when you've been trying to draw a cool thing for 10 minutes and then having the entire thing get washed out in the wrong color is a huge letdown.
- Allow more precise drawing with smaller brushes.
- A gallery of custom ships you can trade with other players.
- When we reach certain scores or find "rare drops" from kills, let us collect them to pump up custom ships, so they don't all end up the same stats.
- Or at the very least, give us some of this customization stuff as a modest DLC. lol

I lost count how many times I wrote reviews for this and then deleted them, because a kind friend very excitedly gifted it to me before I could tell them no after I said "I might buy it some day to see what what people are talking about", and I've never wanted to break their heart about it.

But I'm up at 2am today and feeling sleepdrunk and may as well confess it, like a year after the fact.

I tried playing, got fed up, left it alone. Tried to discuss it with a few friends only to have them get emotional about how much they loved it. Tried to restart game with more effort and new perspective. Characters remembered prior choices anyway. Wasn't fond of that "quirky" aspect.
The game makes no sense at all.
The music grates on my nerves like nothing else.
The art style burns my eyes, even though I grew up on stuff like this.
The method of battle being determined by these bullet-whatevers in a tiny box just sucks a$$ for anyone with unsteady hands or coordination/timing issues.

3/10 rating, because at least it makes some friends happy, even if it annoys the hell out of me.

I always wanted this game, but the thing that really got me revved to buy it was a great sale plus bonus content with the option to operate on an ugly Cheeto. LOL

10/10, even if my poor old computer can barely handle it.
