This is one of the best extraction shooters hands down. The interplay between the sound design, gun play and environment weave together and deliver such an amazing experience.

After completing the base game and doing most of the sidequests, I can say that I overall enjoyed the experience. However, I did have some grudges that bugged me throughout my playthrough. Here are my pros and cons with the game, and these are in no specific order and neither in a well composed order.

Pros:
  • The additions to the movement and skill trees really improved the overall gameplay experience.
  • The guns was more numerous and different. I tend to use Jakobs a lot, but this time I used Vladof, Dahl and my lovely Jakobs much, much more!
  • Many of the characters that you meet throughout the game felt expressive, which I got a good laugh from.
Cons:
  • The Calypso twins never really captured me. If I were to compare them to Handsome Jack from the Borderlands 2, they never made me despise them as much as Jack did. Whenever he started talking I was completely enraptured by him, I hated him and loved it. But every time the Calypso twins came on I always felt annoyed and just wanted them to go away so I could get back to shooting the bad guys. Out of any con from this game, they were the biggest one.
  • The boss fights didn't feel as impactfull this time around. Previously they felt like these really big badasses that was going to be tough to face, but now they all just felt kind of lackluster. Many of the Vault Monsters looked really bad ass, but they die so quickly if you have a decent gun.
  • On the topic of boss fights, the last fight against Tyreen had little to no actual build up. You just kind of fight her and that's it. I wish there was just a little bit more to buildup that led up to the transformation and actual boss fight.

I can probably come up with more pros and cons if I spent more than 10 minutes to write this review. But overall, would I recommend this game. Yes and no, and that depends on who I'm recommending it to and why.
If you are already a fan of the previous games and has maybe played at least one of them, enjoyed the story and gameplay , then I would only recommend Borderlands 3 to you for two separate reasons:
  1. If you love the gameplay and do not care to much for story, then this game has gameplay in spades.
  2. But if you value the story and the characters more than gameplay, and if that is the case then I don't fully recommend it. If you want to see old characters make an appearan6ce and have a little nostalgic moment, then you'll definitely get that, but the overarching story is not that thrilling.
However, if you have not played any previous Borderlands games then I strongly recommend that you start by playing either Borderlands or Borderlands 2 first. This is why:
  • Many characters from previous games make appearances constantly, and if you do not know them then the experience won't be as fun.
  • The previous events that take place are the basis that led up to Borderlands 3 and they are often mentioned or harkoned back to. Thus, if you don't know any of this events, it might take away from your overall experience.
However, I'm not your dad and neither a professional critic. So if you just want to shoot bad guys and play with bad ass guns, then who am I to stop you!
In the end I recommend the game, if you have played any of the previous games and have a clue about the characters and events of yore. But not for the story, but for the nostalgia (which isn't a good reason) and for the enjoyable gameplay. And guns.

Simply said, Risk of Rain 2 has some great replay value and very fun challenges and other things to unlock as you delve deeper into the game!
With the addition of multiplayer it adds a whole new way to play, as you decide who gets what items (or steal all the items from your friends just to be a ♥♥♥).

I sincerely think that if you enjoy the Binding of Isaac, Hades or any other roguelike game, this is definitely worth checking out!

If I would try to think of a single thing I did not like about this game, I would have to sit for a while! I can honestly not come up with ANY bad critique!
This game has had me hooked from the moment I started it and I think it will do exactly that for you too.

So just do yourself a favour and buy it. It's definitely worth it.

This is a short revision of my earlier review.

After coming back to the game a few years later, I know find the game much more fun! I haven't met as many toxic players, as of recently I have only met pleasent people!

I would now like to say that the game is enjoyable enough to recommend to others!

Early Access Review
From the few hours I now can say that I love it! The current content of the game falls a little short after a few hours, but they will surely update it and add more items.
I may only speak for myself, but I always loved the firebug. But i honestly think that right now it is not the most fun class right now. I only think that because the firebug currently does not have that many weapons. The trusty flamethrower, the trench gun, the microwave gun and the starter gun. It isn't much to play around with! But do not fret, with the other amount of content I can surely say that it is a great game and is definetly worth to play with a couple friends!
