What no one tells you is that this is actually a LANGUAGE LEARNING GAME at its core lol

You solve the puzzles by choosing the right word for the presented image in the target language you chose. There's many languages to choose from including Japanese, which is what I chose. For example, you see hippopotamus image and then have to choose the japanese word カバ out of 3 word options.

The art is just the cherry on top.

It has cat jokes😸 and a good amount of non-feline humor. The story is a little strange at first but it gets pretty interesting. There's some nice easter egg references and cameos from the other games made by the devs like "When The Past Was Around" and "She and the Light Bearer". I also enjoyed the minigames like the Future Fighter game in the arcade.

But MOST IMPORTANTLY, the story is a beautiful journey that is told masterfully, taking advantage of the medium. The ending and the journey to that ending is very satisfying and there were times I just stopped playing to think about what the characters just said and appreciate the meaning. The game has emotional depth.

Features the latest advancements in game physics technology developed by Koei Tecmo and pushes the envelope in the realm of 3D models by redefining the anatomy of human thighs and asking the question, "how thick can 'thicc' truly be?" and "Sensei, is it true that oppai are made of jelly?"

Resleriana is a game about licking candy to teleport, depleting a fantasy world of its natural resources, petting your best friend's cat ears, and murdering hordes of adorable monsters all the while looking extremely cute.

NOW THE REAL REVIEW:
= Pros =
  • High end 3D models and textures. It really does look like a PS5 JRPG.
  • Has some of the best music in video games I've heard in the past year. I'm really looking forwards to a soundtrack release!
  • Fashionable and pretty character designs with many physics elements.
  • Turn based combat that uses an interesting "timeline" system where controlling the turn order determines whether enemies or your party can use their special burst attacks and get certain buffs/debuffs.
  • A lot of stuff to craft/synthesize and character progression boards.
  • Funny and cute story so far that features cinematics with good quality JP voice acting.
  • High quality 2D art featured in "memoria" (equipable cards) and throughout the story.
  • Vast array of new and likeable characters with unique background stories
  • Ryza
  • Other returning characters from previous atelier games

= Cons =
  • Exploration is very watered down:
  • Dungeons are 100% linear
  • You can only move left or right in towns
  • Like most mobile games, the game limits story progression through a stamina/energy system. However, you would need to play a lot every day in order to run out of stamina.
  • No controller support. You have to play by clicking everything with your mouse.

= The Gacha System (the good, the bad, the ugly, and the really ugly) =
  • Bad:Characters are obtained through a gacha system.
  • Good: You get 1 daily free pull.
  • Really Good: If you use free or paid currency to pull you get "medals" which can be used to buy characters from the shop. These medals don't expire and can still be used to buy featured characters even after the featured gacha banner has ended.
  • Ugly: The daily free pull does not give you a medal so it doesn't count towards pity.
  • Really Ugly: Pulls are pretty expensive if you use paid currency, even compared to other gacha.
    • Part of the problem is that this game doesn't give you as much free currency as other games do.
    • The other part of the problem is that the game doesn't have a monthly subscription plan that gives you a lot of gacha currency for a good price if you log in every day of the month like most other gachas. There's also no battle pass but I heard that at least that is coming a few months later. However, so far no news of an upcoming monthly sub for login rewards.

short but sweet 2-3 hour game. I really enjoyed the chill vibes and gentle atmosphere that the art and sound effects create. The story was interesting and moving, even though there is no dialogue. Everything is conveyed through sound and pictures but it works really well. It was a great game to chill to in the evening!

I absolutely love listening to this soundtrack, I can loop the same song and listen for hours while working or while just improvising solos over it. One of my favorites is "Windmill". Even if you're not into puzzle games, at least get this OST!

Contains 1 song for each character in the cover art sung by the character's voice actress. The production quality of the music is pretty good. The singing is OK. They are voice actors, not singers, and are also singing "in character", But if you're used to that kind of stuff from other anime/games then you'll probably like these.

This is not a co-op game with a lot of co-op puzzles but more like a story and action driven cinematic game.

It was fun and there's good replayability since there are multiple ways to get through an area and different way to achieve the current goal.

Bosses have been creative, challenging, and unique, I've died several times in Hard mode in a lot of the battles. Every boss has several gimmicks to it, kind of like in Zelda, and I found it fun to try to figure them out. There's a lot of hidden treasures and puzzles as well as new enemies/abilities that keep the exploration gameplay satisfying. Pixel art is one of the best I've seen and the sound effects are very satisfying. Music is OK, it does the job but it's not a selling point.

The writing style is humorous and I find the story/world interesting as it seems to share parallels with real life religion and spiritual practices which makes the player think about this from a less traditional perspective. However, as the game goes on the story gets more and more confusing and it doesn't really seem to be making any clear points. After the midgame, whenever characters have long dialogues or monologues, I dont feel like they said anything that makes sense or that adds value to the story.
