I'm writing this review as someone who's been on and off ArcheAge since Launch. I'll try to keep this short but it's honestly hard.

I've been playing since Open-Beta so I have roughly more than 2-3k hours on this game(before it came on steam). This game is really fun with friends and the PVP is always engaging. I've only bought patron in ArcheAge once. After the 1st month, I started buying it with in-game gold. If you are smart with your money and you know what you are doing, you will be fine. Especially against the "p2w" kids. I haven't had a single problem slapping down divine buff and epic buff pirates and PVP'ers. A-lot of people say the game is P2W and honestly it is and it isn't. With the new updates coming out they have limited or rather normalized arena so that everyone get's equalized gear if instanced PVP is your thing. For Open World PVP...that Is a different story. You could see someone being ahead but there is a pay-wall. After a certain point, the gap between f2p and "p2w" players gets smaller and smaller. Trion is even throwing out free gear for f2p players as well. With the over-all patches that have been coming out I have a love and hate relationship with the game. I still think it's one of the best MMO's I've played in a while, sadly it was a hindered experience by Trion. I will be making a come-back to this game when ArcheAge 3.0 comes out. They are saying it will be a brand new legacy server with all the new content so everyone who joins gets a fresh start(you will also have to make a new account for it). Sadly, that comes out on December 10 but until then I will be playing on morpheus to brush up my skills and still keep learning new things.

Pros:

  • Very fun engaging PVP(Arena and Open world)

  • Good amount of dungeon content, but the items you get will be worthless until 3.0

  • Fun housing system that will be improved even more in the upcoming 3.0 patch

  • As of 2.9 most class combinations are viable now, 3.0 is supposedly suppose to make it even more balanced and more classes viable.

  • Good graphics that are being slightly improved in 3.0 as well

  • Labor system, which means people can't get too far ahead but there is a paywall.

  • Extremely fun with friends and a good guild, the community is ok as well depending on your server you pick

Cons:

  • As of right now, some servers are quite dead(this is good and bad). Good because you can make money easily and grab land, bad because there isn't many players to contest with or communicate and do world content. It depends on what you want. (You can server transfer to a higher pop server, if you wish but, it cost $$).

  • Story quest isn't all that enticing. It stops around level 40-50. Hopefully it improves in 3.0

  • Trion is not the best host, but they are improving.

  • There was a long 2-3 months of server lag, but now I don't see anymore. Hopefully that continues.

  • Crafting is RNG based, prepare to pray to RNG-JESUS.

  • Imo, game is Pay to progress faster, which I don't like but I'm not complaining either. Not everyone can play 6 hours or more a day. I don't have problems with PVP, unless I'm ganked but I'm quite experienced and a PVP level-headed. After a certain point though, the f2p player will catch up and it will "normalize". I'm strictly speaking from experience as someone who had epic buff/epic weapon from only paying 1 month of patron with irl cash and buying apex with in-game gold.
(I only played about 2-4 hours a day...more on the weekends though).

Honestly the game is still good. It all depends what you want from this game. If you want to be the best in PVP, sadly you will need patron to help you compete, after 1-2 months just pay with in-game gold. If you are playing on a old server, you will need to invest time to catch up. It's just that simple (Which is why I want the 3.0 fresh legacy servers). If you just care about the story, dungeon content, open world content, world content and the community than this is still a good game for you. There is no rush to explore that content and you won't need patron to explore any of that. Trion has improved a-lot since the launch of ArcheAge and hopefully 3.0 will make the game better again. I have slight faith they can do it better now, that they have had some experience under their belt.

TLDR: Love/Hate relationship. I recommend the game for casual players and people who don't mind investing time into the game. Game is not catered to the light hearted and you will need to PVP at some point. I don't recommend the game for people who like a quick MMO experience and will only play for 1-2 weeks.

You think this is a motherfxxxxxg game?!?!?! NO. This is love. This is life. But seriously game is aight, I may or may not just be addicted to it. I have encountered no bugs so far. Controls work well. Game is lacking a-lot more RPG mechanics than it had before but, it's still a good game. The A.I. Could do with a lot of improvement. I was expecting more from them in their 5 year development time span. I expected similar story from Fallout 3 or NV so I was not really disappointed in that area. Combat tree is OK, it's not the best, I do like how some of the new features though. The crafting is really fun(and house building). I spent quite a few time building/crafting and setting up settlements. As for exploring, Most places you go to are the same, just different loot or designed different way. I guess that makes sense since they want to encourage you to "grind" and get more materials for crafting and building. I was honestly expecting a whole lot more and I'm only mildly disappointed, but I still love the game so, I can only give the game a 7/10.
