This game is phenomenally addicting, but not in a bad way. It's challenging, interesting, and it provides an excellent source of entertainment. I love the little NPCs as they run around and the pace of the game is great for most people. It's not hard to understand once you get into it, but there are definitely some niche little things to figure out and abuse, which is always lovely. Fantastic game, 10/10 with an active dev.

Main addicting trait is that the dev has EXPERTLY paced the game to have each goal JUST around the corner. Fabulous, fantastic, fun!

This is great and relaxing. DLCs are good. I used to think the cosmetic system was bad in this game, then Darktide came out.

Unfortunately unplayable right now because of horrible stutter every 15-40 seconds that I can't resolve with even drastic system-side measures. Even if you have an RTX card like me, which didn't exist when I bought the game, there's no guarantee this game will play well.

This game has the worst combat ramp up I've ever seen. Zone two of the game forgets new enemies, new types of quests, better guns and instead uses zergs to present a challenge. Zergs aren't fun, they're boring and unnecessarily difficult when I'm just trying to loot a random ass barn in the middle of nowhere. There is one difference between the 1st and second zone and that is the second zone throwing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of enemies at you that are entirely too bullet spongey for you to complete anything at all. You have to save up ♥♥♥♥ tons of ammo just to kill one giant robot, even hitting all of its weak spots - just to get maybe 10 rockets and ammo for guns you either don't use or don't have.

There's also an extreme lack of good loot in this seemingly inhospitable area. I keep getting T1 garbage that I've had since the 10 hour mark with a smattering of T2 and T3 attachments and maybe a couple weapons. 30 hours in I shouldn't be seeing the same ol' Moller PP T1.

Every combat scenario is identical. Get seen, find cover, have a shoot off. Repeat. The tanks and harvesters take it to another level, though. They force the player to hide inside structures to take pot shots at weak points. Boring. And yes, I have single handedly killed not 1, or 2, but 3 tanks and 1 T2 harvester at the same time with just a T1 N60 and a T1 rocket launcher out in the open with zero cover and no revives. I don't suck, the combat does.

The biggest let down is the quest system - I'm over here doing the stupid FNIX questline, which skips a bunch of lore for a new player, but for some reason is set right on the end of the archipelago (zone 1). Wave defense is not this game's forte, as it takes 2-3 entire clips to kill one hunter even when shooting the fuel on the back (what's the point of hardpoints if they don't kill the thing?). On top of the FNIX questline being stupid, the normal quests are entirely too bland for a game like this. Find note, read note, sends you to some place 10km away, you find a note/body/weapon/recording, quest done. Every single one.

I'll also note that I'm playing alone. Don't do that. There should be an enemy count ramp-down for singleplayer. I'm 1 person killing literally hundreds of machines with a pistol.

Korai hozzáférési értékelés
I have now made it past 1,000 hours of playtime. It took a while. Roughly 1,000 hours. Still loving it. Mods fix much of the stuff I say below, especially the Perfect Placement mod. At some point at a year EA the devs mucked with the enemy AI and now it's pretty derpy, 4/10 AI. I have now seen strange sights no Norseman should ever witness; below a great river wall spanning the waters and above in the mountain snows, sheltered beneath hoary rocks.

Get heiming already, Viking.

I've made it to the first metal tier of the game and made a great honking viking hall on an island with a bridge and a dock and a garden and a forge. Now I'd say the game up to this point is amazing, pretty dang neato and worth your 20 moneys DEFINITELY. 9/10.

I do have some gripes to address, however. The building mechanics need some heavy revision. Building is currently incredibly precise and frustrating to get right. Building nicely that is. I like building in games and I like building consistent and extra detailed things. It's terribly annoying to build over water in this game. It's also very hard to snap pieces onto sections that are close to the ground, and the difficulty depends on the shape, size, and proximity of the piece. I'd like to freshening up of the system, and I'd like more building functions, like upside down stuff. Maybe a separate mode that allows snapping of objects easily? Another frustrating mechanic is the terraforming. PLEASE make terraforming more precise. It's very hard to make organized plots of farmland with the giant glob of farmland or normal ground overriding each other constantly and the raise land stuff just sucks hardcore, especially over water.

That's it. Those are my gripes. Building is frustrating in some scenarios.

As of now, the game doesn't have too many enemies to harry my adventures and goals. The ones that are in the game are pretty f*cking cool though, and are properly balanced and are a challenge when they're supposed to be and just another grunt when they need to be. I'd like to see more for sure, early game and elsewhere. The AI is also pretty good in this game. Enemies try to avoid attacks like arrows, melee, and mill about in panic sometimes just to annoy you and pose a longer threat.
EDIT: At some point 2 years ago they ruined the AI and all it does is run away now. It feels much worse than the initial enemy AI.

There isn't a lot of environmental change in this game, but what there IS is phenomenal and beautiful, I love the aesthetic of this game and I'd like to see more biome variation, possibly in the form of minibiomes like what exist in Terraria or subvariants like in Minecraft. I'd also like to see more weather events. Rain and thunder is only exciting the first few times you're outside playing in the water. Light showers, absolutely torrential downpours, and lightning storms that pose a fire hazard would be dope and immersive. Valheim is supposed to test this ultimate warrior, right, so why stop at simple rain storms? Seasons would be a welcome feature, but that might be too far.

I could have a few more features to recommend or things to criticize, but so far the game is a 9/10 for me and the only real frustration is the unfleshed quirks of the building system. The rest is hopes and wishes honestly. Beware, this game is highly addicting.

I have played this game every year since 2015 with and without mods, it hasn't gotten old yet. I just wish deathweed had a Crimson variant and that the echo block had a wall variant. Those are my only gripes.

Massive modability. I haven't really seen too many bugs. The most frustrating so far has been the incessant lag in the Automatron facility (RobCo I think?) which is due to messed up cells. Great game. Buy it. Only a few minor CTDs, and mostly because of load order stuff that I needed to sort.

Give it a go.

Feel free to read my previous positive review before this one, it covers gameplay and replayability.

I cannot recommend this game any longer because of the failure by Wildcard to implement ANY sort of optimization of save features, the game itself, and the uninstall feature. I tried uninstalling this game 2 weeks ago and was unable to because of unknown "errors" that only occurred with ARK. After spending over 24 hours systematically deleting every file from my drive, and not even being able to get everything, some update forced the game to become "always up to date" even after I set it to only update when I opened the game. This subsequently refilled my drive with 200GB of garbage. Fortunately, the uninstall button worked this time, and I reclaimed my drive. I suspect this has to do with GPU for whatever reason because when viewing task manager the GPU and memory are highly taxed with nothing else running (even after a fresh restart). If this is the case, it took a 3 generation upgrade from a GTX 760 to a GTX 1060 to be able to uninstall this game.

Apart from the GIRTH of this game, the gameplay itself is spoiled by Wildcard's unwillingness or inability to optimize performance for mid-tier rigs. I could run max settings on any map at 40-50fps, but at the cost of having the reset my graphics every 20 minutes and constantly tweaking view distances and shadow textures. Nothing ever worked. Trying the lowest settings in some places that were too busy still resulted in horrible fps and awful lag that causes far too many deaths and losses of gear for me to care any longer. I've lost too many dinos, built too many laggy castles, and utterly failed at PVP because of the dev teams inability to read community requests.

I give this game a 6/10 with a grain of salt for the developer's ignorance.

Early access review: Note, my rig is more powerful than it was during this review by a long shot. I have 4 hyperthreaded cores, was using a GTX 760 and have 16G of RAM as well as a SSD with all steam games installed on it and was still only able to get 40-50 frames when not in combat. Combat ranged from 10-30 frames.

I absolutely recommend this game; however, only to those who have above decent PCs that have at least four cores and 8-12 gigs of ram. This game is frankly brilliant, no matter how jumpy it gets at times it still ends up being loads of fun.
Good:
Has amazing graphics
Has realistic terrain
Good textures for most dinosaurs
Contains hours and hours of gameplay that can range from building a simple hut to a massive fortress
Modability
Frequent updates
The hours farming pay off and even make the game more fun for future farming most of the time
Fun combat

Bad:
You have to be prepared to face horrible events that lead to other problems and are all based on luck
Farming often takes hours to complete one project
Admin commands are lackluster and are sometimes overly complicated
Although combat is mostly fun, clear power differences can be seen, as intended, but this is still annoying
Sometimes you just hate yourself, like when you accidentally eat your wyvern egg instead of throwing it on the ground.
Still needs heavy optimisation

All in all, this game is a pretty good thing to play on the weekends.
9/10 would buy again

After 441 hours, not many compared to a lot of other players of the game, I still STRONGLY recommend this game. The pure chance aspect is very loveable, and makes the game unique compared to other similar titles. The Aberration content added an even greater amount of playability to the game, and provides the mega-sci-fi content that the game sorely needed. I recommend buying both the Aberration DLC and the Scorched Earth DLC, both are fantastic and moderately optimized (although aberration is a little choppy around water like The Island.)

9/10 would buy again!

Well... it's pretty unbalanced. Great fun if you like rushing a wall and dying. There really should be a level system. I got kicked from a server because I killed someone... Wait? Isn't that the point of the game? To kill everybody who isn't wearing the same color crest as you? Yeah, people get really butt hurt when they die for some reason. Well any way, it's great fun! The building is a bit finicky though.

Multiplayer can be un-fun but otherwise it has great mod support, a fantastic community, amazing creators, and so much more. 10/10 would kill zombie again
